Bureau Of Abandoned Mine Reclamation
10/18/02
BAMR Mission Statement• The Bureau’s mission is “to reclaim and
rehabilitate the scars of abandoned mining operations where no responsible party exists; to protect the health and safety of residents of coal mining areas from mine hazards; to improve the quality of streams adversely impacted by drainage from abandoned mines; to restore drinking water to those whose water has been contaminated or diminished by past mining activities; to enhance the environment; and to use program resources effectively and efficiently.”
BAMR DISTRICT BOUNDARIES
Problem Areas Left by Past Coal Mining
PROJECT FUNDING SOURCES• OSM Title IV Funding
– Fees paid by active coal industry nationwide– Grants provided to states with approved programs– PA currently receiving approx. $25 million/yr
(Includes 10% Set-Aside)– Primary purpose is for human health and safety
problems– Appalachian Clean Streams Initiative (ACSI)
Funds• Bond Forfeiture Funds• Growing Greener (G2) Funding
Types of Abandoned Mine Land (AML) Problems
• Mine Subsidence• Abandoned Surface Mines

Downhole Mapping Device Requirements
• Ability to transport to site using a small or midsize SUV.
• Device must be capable of operating independently from the transport vehicle (12 volt D.C. or 120 volt A.C. generator)
• Deployable in a cased HQ borehole (3-inch I.D. plastic or steel casing)
• Optional deployment in an air rotary drill hole (4 or 6-inch I.D. plastic or steel casing).
• Utilization in dry, partially inundated or completely flooded mine voids
• Ability to utilize device in a horizontal conduit or opening, vertical shaft or subsidence feature.
Downhole Mapping Device Requirements
• Optional optical camera attachment which can rotate and pivot (w/lighting and audio visual output).
• Depth measurement and recording capability• Optional temperature sensor for use in mine fire
applications.• Optional sensors for mine water quality parameters
(pH and conductance).• Operational software must be Windows 2000 and Intel
P3 compatible.• Analysis software must be AutoCAD 2000 and/or
SurvCADD compatible.
