BUREAU OF EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES
A Little About Symposium 2016 The annual educational symposium is a hallmark event for our EMS region! On behalf of the EMMCO West board of directors, EMMCO West staff, and our Symposium sponsors and vendors, we are pleased to be able to offer this year’s edition of Symposium 2016! This past year our regional EMS council has had to overcome significant financial challenges. Events, like the Symposium, were in jeopardy of being postponed. Thanks to a great supportive team we are able to host Symposium 2016 for the EMS practitioners in Northwest PA! Symposium 2016 features a half-day Friday EMS Leaders of Tomorrow (EMSLOT) program, followed by a Friday evening session of the EMS Safety Conference, and wraps up with traditional looking programs for Saturday. STAT MedEVAC is hosting Party 2016 immediately following the EMS Safety Conference on Friday. This year the vendor area will be opened all day Saturday.
We look forward to seeing you at this year’s Symposium!

Distracted Driving, In and Out of the Ambulance by Joel Feldman, Esq.
Sponsored by Meadville Ambulance Driving while engaged in any activity that could divert a person’s attention away from the primary task of driving is the definition of distracted driving. Texting, making cellphone calls, eating, reaching for the radio microphone the list of activities that put all of us at risk, is endless.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that in 2011, the most recent year for which data is available, 3,331 people lost their lives and another 387,000 were injured in distraction-affected crashes..
The number of collisions involving distracted emergency vehicle drivers on public roads, who were at-fault, increased by 122 percent over the last decade coinciding with a meteoric rise in technology.
Joel Feldman, founder of EndDD.org, lost his daughter to a distracted driver in 2009 and admits he drove distracted-until his daughter’s death changed his driving habits.
In this powerful presentation, Joel will talk about his experience with distracted driving and how EMS pro-viders, firefighters and other public safety professionals can work together and discourage bad driving habits among each other and, more importantly, their families, friends and neighbors.
EMS Driving & Simulation Brian Shaw
EMMCO West is proud to host a driver simulation module at this year’s safety conference. This training module is a joint project between UPMC and EMSI to help improve safe operations of emergency vehi-cles. The simulator is contained in a climate-controlled trailer and is capable of proving training for two drivers simultaneously.
Each driver station has three large screens to provide visual input, as well as surround sound to immerse the driver in the simulation. Drivers will not only have to negotiate traffic on their way to an emergency call, but also have to operate the lights, sirens, and radio for a truly realistic experience. Each simula-tion starts with a preset program but can be changed on the fly to provide for ever changing conditions. Whether you need practice driving on the streets of a big city or through white-out conditions on a coun-try road this driver simulator will improve your skills.
