    The King is Here

     THE FIJI TIMES — SATURDAY, MARCH 5, 2016 1

GLOBAL franchise Burger King was intro-duced to locals two weeks ago by morethan 100 relatively ‘unknown’ children

    — but there was nothing discrete about theopening of this classic $6.5m building, or thesize and taste of the burgers served on theday.

The buzz created by the opening on Febru-ary 17, the dynamic feel of the homely setup, the eye-popping size of flame grilled burg-ers, and the scrumptious taste of the worldfamous Whoppers, caused a frenzy when therestaurant opened its doors to the public thenext morning.

The King had surely arrived and hordes of

people had lined up to savour the town’s new-est flavour. Operated by a Motibhai Groupsubsidiary, Victus Ltd, the Martintar branchwas the first outlet introduced into the localmarket. Motibhai Group and Burger King Fijichairman Kirit Patel said the occasion wouldregister as a milestone achievement in thecompany’s history books.

He said choosing Nadi to be the home of thefirst Burger King in the country was also a sig-nificant move by the company.

“The opening of the Burger King is a hall-mark of events to come, as we believe that in2017, Nadi will become the third city of our be-loved country,” he said.

“The Nadi township is continuing to experi-ence a population growth and we are deter-

mined and committed to contribute to ourcommunity by extending our services.

“The Jet Set town, Nadi, plays a huge role inthe Fijian economy and is the hub of tourismso it is very appropriate that one of the world’sfastest growing quick service restaurantchain, like Burger King, is opened to serve thetourists and locals with world famous Whop-pers.”

He said Burger King had the unique ability tobring together members of different commu-nities who shared a love for the world famoushamburgers only offered by the franchise.

“Apart from the unique tasting experience, this Burger King outlet will become more thanjust a place to grab a quick bite as it will be animportant place where people will be able to

meet and interact with one another in a friend-ly environment.

“This will become an important gatheringplace for the community.

“The play area for children and the diningarea will create a family environment whereour people can eat and the children can play.”

The opening day was made extra special bythe presence of the 150 children with specialneeds from the greater Nadi area.

Students of the Nadi Centre for Special Edu-cation and residents of Saint Mina Children’sHome, Treasure House Christian Children’sHome and Loloma Home and Care Centrewere chief guests who enjoyed the day withhearty meals, alongside Motibhai Group man-agement and staff.

    We are hereto stay

BURGER King is here to stay and if you haven’t heard of

this fast-food chain, you will soon.

Local conglomerate Motibhai Group has announced

plans to open seven more outlets across the country.

After first announcing their Master Franchise Agreement

with Burger King Asia Pacific last year, the company has es-

tablished two restaurants — one at the Nadi International

Airport and the second in Martintar, Nadi.

Burger King Fiji general manager Akash Narsey said they

were in negotiations to open a few more branches in Suva

    over the next few months.

“Burger King is in negotiations to open three Burger King

outlets in the Capital City at strategic locations, with its sec-

ond airport outlet in the farewells hall at the Nadi Interna-

tional Airport, scheduled to open later this year, which will

be followed by other towns in Fiji,” he said.

“When I refer to continuous growth, we target within the

next few years to be looking at between seven to 10 Burger

King outlets in Fiji. Our immediate plan, however, is to open

three Burger King Restaurants before the end of 2016 in the

    Suva and Nadi areas.”

Motibhai Group and Burger King chairman Kirit Patel said

acquiring the agreement from one of the world’s leading

hamburger franchise was a strenuous but fruitful exercise.

“We’ve had quite a good experience in the restaurant

business in the form of our cafes at the Nadi International

    Airport,” he said.

“So that gave us a platform or good grounding and ex-

perience to venture into something that we could associate

    ourselves with an international brand.

“Obviously with McDonalds in Fiji, we felt that being in-

volved in a brand such as Burger King, which is the fastest

growing restaurant chain in the world, was something that

we wanted to be part of.

“Burger King executives from the Asia Pacific office came

over and had a look at the market.

“They looked at a number of organisations and we hadalso expressed our interest.

“We ended up being chosen and as a result we now have

    Burger King in Fiji. “

He said the company had an ambitious business plan to

turn Burger King into the country’s largest fast food chain.

“The standards and the requirements to run a business

such as Burger King are very demanding.

“We have been very interested in setting up the franchise

    here in the domestic market.

“We even involved overseas experts in the whole set up of

each branch and we did that because we want to always set

a good standard benchmark and ensure that we deliver the

Burger King promise and that is, ‘Taste is King’.”

WITH Nadi being the tourist mecca

of the country, the location of the

new Burger King in Martintar also

provides an easy access for the thousands

of tourists that flock to the town each year.

Tourism Fiji global public relations man-

ager Patricia Mallam said there was a newwave of familiar eateries now sweeping the

nation which could be an added attraction

for tourists to come to Fiji.

“We have our tourists that come for the

unique Fijian experience but after a while

they want something that they are used to

and that is where large f ranchise chains like

Burger King come in,” she said.

“From a tourism perspective, this new

product really adds value to what we can of-

    fer to our international visitors.

She said after going around and explor-

ing their tastebuds with local cuisines, tour-

ists also on many times feel the need of

that familiarisation whereby they can iden-

tify themselves with an international brand

    which they know well.

“This is when outlets like Burger King have

much more to offer to our tourists and this is

    the encouraging part about it.”

Ms Mallam was accompanied by interna-

tional PR agents from across the globe who

shared their views on the new multi-million

    dollar facility.

Rosie Apps, an international PR agent

from Sydney, Australia, said she had fond

memories of Burger King as a child and be-

ing part of the official opening brought back

    wonderful memories.

“I think that what we will take from this

which is that familiar feeling of home and

our childhood memories of going to Burger

King and putting on those fun hats and hav-

ing a wonderful meal with our family and

    friends,” she said.

“It’s that familiarity which is something

that the international traveller will see when

they come over to Fiji and find a Burger King

right next to one of their resorts.

“So I guess that is an advantage not only

for the tourist but also for the business.”

Ms Apps commended the Motibhai Group

and its partners for venturing into the fast

    food business.

“It’s a growing market and not a single

person can argue with the fact that it’s a

very popular market with anyone whether

AuctionsThe next best thing in real estate

AUCTIONS willsoon be a regularsale technique in Fiji’s realestateindustry. While some realestatecompanies have sold off some

listings through auctioning, this saletechnique is somewhat relatively foreign inFiji.

Harcourts Fiji, one of the biggest realestate companies in the country said theyauctioned off properties in the past andthose had allbeen successful.

“I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’twork if we tried again,” Savinesh Mudiliar,Harcourts Fijisenior sales consultant said.

“In2015Harcourtsconductedtwoauctioncampaigns and both properties sold, oneprior to auction and the other sold on theday under the hammer.”

Most properties in New Zealand andAustralia are sold via auction. And, MrMudiliar said Fijiwas ready for this too.

“It is very much like auctions that peopleof Fijihave witnessed at charity functionswith vehicle auctions and so on, but aproperty auction is more complicatedthan that. There is a vigorous marketingcampaign associated.”

RealEstate Agents Licensing Boardchairman Dr AbdulHassan said realestateauction was an intense and fast marketingprocess. And, he adds, it has severalbenefits.

“Selling realestate under auction is oneway of saving a large amount on any type ofrealestate property,” Dr Hassan said.

“It may be undeveloped land or anydeveloped property. Realestate auctionsreduce the time of disposing property andsaves expenses on marketing. For manypotentialbuyers itcreatesacompetitivespirit of an auction and makes the processintimidating.”

    Opportunity to expand business

GOVERNMENT has played a major rolein ensuring the right environment iscreated for businesses to encourage

growth and investments. This is a conceptthat Motibhai Group chairman and CEOKirit Patel believes has also enabled theircompany to expand its reach into sectorssuch as the quick service restaurant mar-ket.

“The annual budgets by Governmenthave been helpful towards the businesssector,” he said.

“But this isn’t only to the business sectorbut to the whole community and populaceas a whole.

“And that gave us the opportunity toventure into and make bold investmentslike Burger King.”

He said policies such as the BainimaramaGovernment’s investment policy and initia-tives was one such catalyst for the Motib-hai Group in franchising with Burger King.

“Government policies and the incentiveswith various other elements within variousgovernment decisions have been condu-cive to the business sector.

“We are thankful to the Government ofthe day for providing this environment for

us.”He said the company’s background in thefood sector also boosted their decision toinvest in the fast food service.

“We had our café pizzeria, a transit café,a café international and also a domesticcafé at the Nadi International Airport. Thatgave us a platform and a good groundingand experience to venture into somethingthat we could associate us with an interna-tional brand.

“Burger King executives came to Fiji afew years ago and they had sourced outa few organisations and we also submit-ted our interests and we ended up beingchosen. The company has so far investedabout $8.5million into establishing BurgerKing outlets in Nadi.
