Adultery, in the Jewish law, was a serious crime punishable with death by stoning. Just as many countries of our world today practice death penalty for crimes like rape, armed robbery, drug trafficking etc. But the main purpose of the Pharisees and scribes is to trap Jesus and use it against Him. But Jesus did not bite their trap. Instead He said to them: “Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her,” (v. 7). These words of Jesus strike them like a sharp sword thrusting their hearts, opening their hearts and realizing that they too are sinners and no one of them can claim that she/he is good and without blemish. In the gospel of St. Matthew (chapter 7), Jesus said: “Judge not and you will not be judged…take first the plank out of your eye, then you will see clearly enough to take the speck out of your brothers’ eyes…” So, the central message in today’s gospel is about showing compassion and not judging and condemning others. Throughout Lent our scripture readings keep reminding us of God’s infinite love, compassion, forgiveness and mercy. Everything around us changes, but God’s love for us does not. Jesus taught us that God is always faithful and consistent and will continue to love us unconditionally, no matter how badly we behave or how serious our sins may be. God’s love for us is perfect, but to make it complete requires that we also reciprocate that love because love is a mutual, two-way process. God’s love cannot be fully effective in us until we have opened ourselves to receive it and have given ours in return. God does not stop loving us when we sin – it is us who stop loving him and thereby damage the relationship. But lent gives us yet another time and opportunity for reconciliation through which we can restore that precious relationship and experience the completeness of his love. On this year of mercy, let us therefore go and announce the gospel of Christ which is the gospel of love, compassion and forgiveness to the whole world. From Fr Ken ...

Clergy Convocation The annual gathering of the Brisbane clergy with Archbishop Mark will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday next week. Please

keep all our priests in your prayers for this event which will culminate in the celebration of the Chrism Mass on Wednesday night. At

this Mass we will renew our commitment to our ministry as we witness the Archbishop bless the Holy Oils for sacramental use in the

coming year. All weekday Masses will be celebrated as usual in the Parish on those days.

Sacrament of Mercy On Friday we will begin the various celebrations for the Sacrament of Penance [communal rite with individual confession and

absolution]. Lent is the important season to celebrate this Sacrament in preparation for Easter. Please be attentive to the Church’s

invitation to celebrate God’s mercy – especially in this Holy Year of Mercy.

Fr Lucius Farewell Please don't forget the Farewell for Fr Lucius, next Sunday after 10am Mass at the Doyle Centre. All welcome.

Fr Ken

A day to remember! Last Sunday and our celebration to bless the work of the construction

of our new church and Parish centre will we remembered as a very

significant day in the 60 year history of the Parish. Thank you to

everyone who contributed in any way – especially being part of the

900+ congregation. What an amazing sight to see so many people

ushering in a new era for our faith community. I will write more next

weekend, but an initial THANK YOU and congratulations.

PASTORAL COUNCIL MONTHLY REPORT:

Welcome: We had to put our final discussion on the Vision Statement on hold as our meeting was devoted to our guest

speaker, Stephanie Santos and the final organisation checks for the Foundation Stone ceremony. Stephanie has been

employed to work fulltime in the Gold Coast Deanery for three years to co-ordinate the work of the youth ministries in the

various parishes. Her three goals are: set up a core group of leaders in each parish; train them and provide resources for

them to work with our youth; and finally to have them able to train others like herself to ensure a sustainable approach to

youth ministry in our deanery.

Build: Watch out for the video Iris Lim produced showing the setting up and packing away for masses at the Doyle Centre.

Brilliant. There was a discussion of all the last minute details for setting up, hospitality and liturgy for the Laying of

Foundation Stone. Thank you to so many people who worked behind the scenes from the parish and schools to enable this

memorial ceremony to be successful.

Serve: A thank you get together for all those involved in the various groups for the mass and Foundation Stone ceremony is

being organised. Plans for Fr Lucius’s farewell after 10am mass in the Doyle Centre on 20th

March were organised.

PROJECT COMPASSION: Before enrolling in the Mondulkiri Community Health Program, supported by Caritas Australia, young midwife Sreymom lacked the practical experience necessary to safely assist childbirth. Now, with the skills and knowledge gained through the program, Sreymom is a trusted midwife who is helping to improve the health of indigenous women and children in her region. Please donate to Project Compassion and help healthcare workers in isolated areas of Cambodia gain vital training to improve the health and wellbeing of the region's indigenous women and children.

A VOCATION VIEW Lent is six weeks of being serious about forgiveness and knowing we are loved. Who will step forward to tell of God's great love for us? The Lord has done great things for us! Vocation Office: 1300 133 544 [email protected] www.bne.catholic.net.au/vocations

Liturgical Music for Fifth Sunday of Lent

Next week’s readings: Is 50:4-7; Phil 2:6-11; Lk 22:14-23:56

INTRODUCTORY RITES: Gathering: The Harvest Of Justice May we find richness in the harvest of justice which Christ Jesus has ripened for us. Bread for the journey, bread for the hungry, all for the glory and praise of God. Gather with patience for those who have nothing. Leave them your riches, and you will receive. Make room for the poor ones, make way for the stranger; for I am the Lord, the Lord your God. For to have mercy on those forgotten, this is my true law, this is my command: Clothe the naked, be home for the orphan, be hope for the widow, and welcome the lost. For to have little is to be in abundance. to give what remains, to give all we have, is to walk with the poor ones, and become the stranger, one with the Lord, the Lord our God. © 1985, David Haas, GIA Publications

LITURGY OF THE WORD: Lord, have mercy. Kyrie, eleison. Kyrie, eleison. Christ, have mercy. Christe, eleison. Christe, eleison. Lord, have mercy. Kyrie, eleison. Kyrie, eleison. Psalm Response: The Lord has done great things for us - we are filled with joy.

Gospel Acclamation: Praise and honour to you, Lord Jesus Christ! If today you hear his voice; harden not your hearts. Praise and honour to you, Lord Jesus Christ! LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST: Acclamation: Save us, Saviour of the world, for by your cross and resurrection you have set us free.

LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST: Communion Processional: O God, You Search Me O God, you search me and you know me. All my thoughts lie open to your gaze. When I walk or lie down you are before me: ever the maker and keeper of my days. You know my resting and my rising. You discern my purpose from afar, and with love everlasting you besiege me: in ev'ry moment of life or death, you are. Before a word is on my tongue, Lord, you have known its meaning through and through. You are with me beyond my understanding: God of my present, my past and future, too. Although your Spirit is upon me, still I search for shelter from your light. There is nowhere on earth I can escape you: even the darkness is radiant in your sight. For you created me and shaped me, gave me life within my mother's womb. For the wonders of who I am I praise you: safe in your hands, all creation is made new. © 1993, Bernadette Farrell, OCP Publications

CONCLUDING RITES Dismissal: (organ) Please remain in silence until the procession has left the church
