BURNABY RCMP CRIME PREVENTION UNIT Vacation Security Getting ready for a holiday away often ends in a last minute rush to grab the keys, passport, and double check that the stove is turned off. With so many other things to remember, it may be easy to forget about home security. Here are some great tips to keeping your place more secure when you are away, so that you can truly relax on vacation. Keep the vacation social media posts and pictures for when you are safely back home. Criminals actively search Instagram and Facebook for holiday updates, looking for empty homes as easy targets. Offer your driveway and the use of your garbage bin to a neighbor while you are gone, so it looks like someone is home. Alternatively, consider having someone you trust stay in your home or make frequent visits. Check your home insurance policy if you plan to go away for more than a few weeks. Many policies are not valid if your home is unoccupied for an extended period of time. Your insurance provider will be able to advise on ways to avoid this. Leave a light on while you are away – with a timer or smart technology that will turn it off during the day and on at night. This will help give the illusion someone is home. Keep an eye out for your neighbours, and be sure to report any crime or suspicious activity. If you think a situation is an emergency, or to report a crime in progress, dial 9-1-1.
