MEANSTREAM

The playa of Burning Man is a tabula rasa, a blank canvas upon which many a fantastic vision has been realized. Submarines, gi-gantic ducks, swimmers, fire-breathing thistles, serpents, chandeliers, grandfather clocks and balsa wood temples have emergedfrom the playa. Every year Burning Man allocates a percentage of its revenue from ticket sales to funding select art projects thatare collaborative, community-oriented and interactive. They do this in order to support the Burning Man art community, and to fa-cilitate the creation of outstanding art for Black Rock City. The vast majority of art installations on the playa, however, are notfunded. In 2010, a percentage of your hard-earned ticket money helped to fund the following art installations, for all Burning Manparticipants to enjoy. Enjoy, yes... 4pyre² christopher schardt4pyre² is a 12 ft pipe with propane burners on each end. Whenthe burners fire, the pipe is propelled around on two axes, trac-ing out the surface of a 12 ft diameter sphere. (4πr² is the formulafor the surface area of a sphere of radius). Enabling this pipe tospin is a gleaming machine of aluminum, stainless steel, bear-ings, shafts, hoses, rotary f luid unions, sprockets, chains, mo-tors, encoders, and microcontrollers. Standing nearly 18 ft tall,it holds the sphere of fire high enough that visitors can get quiteclose. There is also a panel where visitors can control the angleand the thrust of the propane burners, creating different pat-terns through the sphere. The piece will operate every nightfrom darkness till around midnight.

aeolian pyrophonic hall & whispering wall capra j'nevaThe Aeolian Pyrophonic Hall and Whispering Wall conjures themillions of things that are happening within the metropolis atany given time. A sound installation incorporating a wind harp,fire organ, and the voices of the citizens of Black Rock City, thehall envelops citizens in dappled sunlight during the daytime,shadowy effects at night and surrounds them with soundsevocative of the desert and the Burn. Nightly performances ofthe fire organ with dancers, stilters and musicians will take placeafter dark.

caged pulse jets christina sporrongCaged Pulse Jets is an interactive, kinetic sound sculpture. Thecaged birds are five spinning pulse jet engines of various sizesthat create a range of percussive and droning tones. Through acompletely interactive interface, the public can create soundcompositions ranging from the symphonic to the cacophonouswhile they are held captive by the fiery jets spinning by theirown thrust.

city lights project gary longCity Lights Project will bring illuminated art to the dark, backstreets of Burning Man. On the playa, the corner sign postsidentify the roads and pedestrian walkways. These utilitariansign posts are useful in navigating the city by day. At night theseSign posts are a hazard for being unlighted. By installing uniquesolar-powered light sculptures on the sign posts. We will makethem distinctive artistic landmarks and will illuminate themduring the night. The City Lights Project will provide artistsfrom around the world a basic solar light fixture. They will thentransform it into their own light sculpture.

the crossroads iron monkeysThe Crossroads is a community gathering space. Six black-smithed, scroll-work columns (a la Iron Monkeys) encircle a 10'stainless steel fountain f lowing with both fire and water. Insidethe circle of columns a courtyard awaits. Benches and a sculp-ture gallery invite the participant to look and linger, inspiring apublic place to rest and recharge during the journey from placeto place. The Crossroads is also a curated sculpture gallery, pro-viding cultural real estate for some of the playa's often over-

looked sculptures.

doctor megavolt doctor megavoltDoctor Megavolt is a performance piece where a man in a metalsuit interacts with 15 foot long bolts of artificial lightning. Backby popular demand for his 7th Burning Man appearance, Mega-volt is legendary on the playa. The show involves authentic stuntwork that is inherently dangerous and very real - it is an antidotefor the continued march towards a simulated world of CGI ef-fects and virtual reality.

dragon smelter daniel macchiariniThe Dragon Smelter is an 18 foot high steel sculpture with a cru-cible built into it's belly. We will take this creature out to thedesert, fire it up and use recycled aluminum cans to create orig-inal sculptures right there on the playa. Citizens of Black Rockcity will be encouraged to participate in the process of creatingthese sculptures. This year we will also be creating "Karma coins"in a smaller smelter for participants. The coins can be used forbarter, or worn as souvenirs.

ein hammer mister jellyfishBeneath a giant sledge hammer, moving industrial images offrantic workers are visible through skylights on the ground, sug-gesting the enormous power turbines underneath the city needa "bump start". Infinity mirror tunnels, whirling roof vents anda submerging conveyor belt further the illusion. Three regular-sized sledgehammers are the tools for interaction. When a par-ticipant slams one down on their target, a deep, audible "boom"shakes the ground, feet, ankles, etc. The more simultaneouslythe three hammers are struck, the higher the tongues of f lametravel up the giant hammer itself. If the three participants getthe f lames all the way to the top, the hammerhead spins withliquid fire, unfolds, and ref lects shafts of light downward likean infernal disco ball as the underground turbines audibly groanup to speed. Strength and accuracy matter not-- it's all in thetiming. Ein Hammer is a tribute to workers as one.

excellent adventure gustavo huber, shelly brown of carbon work-shopA voice-reactive audio-visual laser-blastin' phone booth experi-ence. Excellent Adventure honors the phone booth as a metro-politan icon, and explores its potential as a sensory experienceaskew from our expectations of its form. The two booths of Ex-cellent Adventure use focused beams of visible light to transmitvoice data from one to the other, and inbuilt dynamic lightingto pulse and fade through the spectrum in response to the toneand volume of the call being received. In this way the boothsquite literally "color" conversation, divorcing the experience oftelephonics from awkward, one-dimensional expectations. In-teractions with Excellent Adventure remind participants thatthe spectacle and miracle of the metropolis is squarely rooted

in our ability to connect with each other.

future's past kate raudenbushCrossing through the cacophony of progress in our shiningdesert Metropolis, we waver and stop to witness a modern utopicvision surrender to a dystopic fate. A monument to man's tech-nological advancement has been mysteriously abandoned totime and left to seed. In its place, a monument to nature growsout of its fertile ground. The angular black steel roots of moderncomputer circuitry in the shape of a stepped pyramid give wayto the ancient roots of a sacred Bodhi tree. This f lowing rootsystem reclaims this relic of our Future's Past in its embrace,and signals the end of consumptive collapse and the beginningof evolved consciousness.

ghost train erik burke, mark bruels, lynn maharas From dawn till dusk come visit the Ghost Train and create yourown digital graffiti. Throughout the festival a projection of alife-sized train slowly moves across the playa creating an infinitetrain-car canvas for participants to digitally paint with modifiedspray cans. As participants paint the projected train their worknot only appears to move with the train but also reappears ran-domly on future trains throughout the event.

the grand f lat piano olle bjerkås, jon wingborgAll the way from Sweden comes The Grand Flat Piano, a 22meter (72') long f lat piano. It has 61 keys in 5 octaves. Each keyis connected to a key on a synthesizer which plays the soundthrough a amplifier and loud speakers. The Grand Flat Pianocan be played by anyone, so just come out on the playa and playon the largest piano you have ever seen. If you want a whole jamsession just bring your own instruments and jam along TheGrand Flat Piano.

the heart machine christine irving, site3 artistsAt the heart of the city, the heart of our Metropolis, exists a ma-chine: the heart machine. Without the heart machine the cityand civilization as we know it would fall apart. Yet without hu-mans to interact with it, the heart machine would cease have apurpose; cease to exist. In the absence of this symbiotic rela-tionship the heart machine sits silently on the playa and partic-ipants passively wander the night looking for "something”.

hindenburk robert burnsThe Hindenburk is a classic wooden framed airship mounted ona mobile platform that aims to reinvigorate a delightful associ-ation with airship travel by bringing it back to a playful place.Shaped in the form of prewar dirigibles, the sculpture points toa time when scientific progress was unaided by the technologi-cal advancement of computers and man-made materials andwas undaunted by implications of war. The Hindenburk has theability to inspire the collective unconscious as a symbol of earlyairship travel when it was a point of thrilling progress, capableof being accomplished with merely natural materials and a gooddose of guts.

home michael christianMaps are the universal medium for communication, easily un-derstood and appreciated in all languages and cultures. Everyculture in the world uses and makes maps in some form or an-other. They have evolved from Babylonian clay tablets to satel-lite imagery visible to anyone access to the internet. It is thispresent technology that makes possible my effort to createdense and complex textured surface designs that incorporatecity maps from around the world - from heavily structured gridformations of planned cities to the medina's of Fez. All thesewoven into one another to create a dense compacted momentand place in time like any good map would do.

infinitarium big art"Infinitarium" is an organic environment that is highly interac-tive as it engages people on many levels. The scale of this playfulgarden is exaggerated, making visitors feel part of the land-scape, yet humbled by nature as it looms large above them. It isa destination for people to interact with each other and the art,and contemplate the role reversal of nature being larger thanhuman-kind. The installation is made of salvage and scrap ma-terials, keeping it's environmental footprint to a minimum. Thisaspect supports the message of the sculpture; that we are smallparts of a larger entity. The components of the sculpture includewater fountains, fire fountains and unique solar-powered light-ing effects. The installation occupies approximately an acre.From a distance, the installation appears to be an unusual andenchanting landscape. As people draw closer to the site, theover-size scale, the elaborate details and the smaller compo-nents captivate viewers. Once they have entered the installation,visitors are enveloped by this natural, enormous environment.

intersection james reagent, charles fieldsAt a busy intersection, figures wait patiently to cross the street.Paying little attention to one another, their minds are insteadoccupied with thoughts of daily responsibilities, to-do lists,frustrations, and f leeting revelations. Enveloped in the unceas-ing noise of the city, they view their surroundings, including oneanother, as obstacles that must be avoided in order to tend totheir busy schedules. Potential connections are passed up asjudgments are quickly formed and opportunities are overlookedentirely. "Intersection" provides these disconnected pedestrianswith the chance to peek into the lives of one another and to dis-cover that there is more in common than the surface would sug-gest.

the kinetic cab company kinectic artists kollectiveThe Kinetic Cab Company will bring a new sense of freedom andwhimsy to the Burning Man event in 2010. Participation is keyto this cab company where the "fare" is collected in humanpower. During daylight hours they will offer rides around theBlack Rock metropolis. Several Kinetic Cabs host art tours anddeep playa journeys. Tours will depart the KCC regularly. Theywill post "Kinetic Cab Stop"s around the playa to pick burnersup for pedal powered rides in delightful machines. The cab stops

will be be an interestingly unique feature of Burning Man 2010,"Metropolis", moving people through pedal powered energy.

luminous passage 2010 gary longIn 2010 we want to revisit the Keyhole entrance to Center Campusing the same method of collaborating artists working individ-ually as a team project. This year we want to bring the art downto eye level. Allow passer-byes to play with the sculptures. Allowthem to add color, to draw and write onto the sculptures. Wood,cardboard and paper will be used to create all the light sculp-tures. A rainbow of markers and pens will be attached to eachinstallation. Passer-bys can use these tools to supply their owncontribution.

malvoye the mentalist jeremy burmeister Malvoye the Mentalist: A fully automated antique fortune tellingbooth, shares versions and visions of the future. Nightly,Malvoye's powers of mentalism are summoned to give you yourown very unique and astonishingly accurate fortune. Malvoyeknows all, Malvoye sees all. Each and every reading gives YOUthe chance to ask Malvoye your own personal question.

mant farm the sober free societyAn homage to Earth's first metropolis, the Mant Farm providesthe Playa with a dramatic, immersive, interactive vertical mazewhere you can explore the concepts of maturation, citizenship,nostalgia, scale, and systems of communities - in a working antfarm built to human scale.

minaret bryan tedrickMinaret is a 50' tower that can be scaled externally to the mid-point, then entered into and climbed to the top. A latticed stain-less steel dome on top allows people to see out without dangerof falling.The tower is in 6 sections. The bottom 3 are based onthe vertebra of a lion.Steel and redwood will be combined toform a climbable structure.The upper 3 sections are painted toresemble snake skin and are smooth on the exterior to discour-age people climbing externally.An interior access portal allowspeople to climb up to the dome.Light and sound effects will en-hance the experience, especially when climbing internally.

nowhere2nowhere monorail helen cookThe Nowhere2Nowhere monorail is a public transit system withan elegant art deco design. The monorail consists of two stationswith a 500' track in between, each station consists of an 8' highraised platform for boarding the monorail and a ticket booth.The monorail car seats two people and efficiently transports therider from Nowhere to Nowhere.

nucleus kasia danula-billhartzA circle of f lames created from numerous smaller circles off lames- symbolizing the nucleus, center of all things.

polygonia douglas taphouseA do-it-yourself cityscape sculpture installation, Polygonia is a

fully interactive art project that mirrors the art theme of BurningMan 2010 -- Metropolis: The Life of Cities. Hundreds of large,colorful interlocking polygons and connectors are used to formfunctional, whimsical, fantastical structures or sculptures, lim-ited only by the imaginations of the participants. Build, teardown, build anew -- a metaphor for the dynamic cycle of realcities. And then, in the end... burn it all down.

promethian fountain wally glennFire burning on water is absolutely hypnotizing. The ability toallow a participant to pick up water and f lame to allow it to burnin their hand is amazing and safe. This piece gives people an op-portunity to safely hold a f lame in their hands for a very brieftime. In that moment they share a time and place with fire in away they may never forget.

spire of fire steve atkins, eric smithFrom the Axum Obelisk to the new Burj Khalifa sky scraper inDubia, towers are built to draw attention. Using shape, texture,materials, and light, towers attract people from afar to serve asa space for assembly. The Spire of Fire, a 48-ft blend of steel,fire, and light, will stand grand and high on the expanse of theopen playa and is designed to ref lect the evolution of modernmetropolitan architecture. Its sheer size and presence will cap-ture attention, and at night the piece will come alive withbrightly colored lights and bursts of rhythmic f lame ref lectedoff of stainless steel.

the stone of rome eric griswold, marilyn besasle, steve daniels,mike hero and othersThe STONE OF ROME is a large, glowing, ancient, sun-diskface. It will ask you to put your hand deep into it's gaping mouthand then tell a lie. It will judge your lie. What will it do, whatwill it say? Nobody knows... except the STONE OF ROME.

subway matt ganucheauWithin chaotic urban environments, we seek mental isolationas a coping mechanism. Through isolation we can escape fromthe tension of surroundings to an internalized space of freedom.As we revisit this space over time, our mental barriers growstronger in an attempt to preserve this internal place of serenity.Subway is an interactive audio installation that examines thisisolation, juxtaposing the dynamic sounds of a New York subwaystation with the vast, unconstrained desert.

syzygryd interpretive arson, false profit labs, gafftaSyzygryd is a town square for the collaborative creation of music.It's a public space, it's a sculpture, and it's a musical instrument.It's the most beautiful expression we can imagine of the joy wetake in community, music, technology, fire, sculpture and archi-tecture. Humans have always made music together with what-ever instruments they had. Bones became f lutes, hides becamedrums. A hundred years ago the symphony orchestra was thepinnacle of musical collaboration. Then came the electric guitarand the four-piece band. Our community today, our city in the

desert, is inextricably linked with the rise of electronic music,but it's no longer enough to have crowds cheering for the per-former. Dancing together is good stuff, but we're not so keen onthe concept of an audience. It's time our interactive metropolishad an interactive concert hall.

temple of f lux rebecca anders, jessica hobbs, peter cimelman andcrewThe Temple of Flux stands not as a habitable building, echoingchurches and mosques from our histories, but as a counter-monument. Referencing our impetus to create structure as wellas to relate to our environment. The Temple of Flux welcomesparticipants to take respite. It beckons one to journey its path-ways and follow its sensuous lines as they arc into the air.

tiny tropolis max fancher, eliza schiffrin, erica geller, adi taylor,gabe mott, eric rubinFrom a distance, Tiny Tropolis appears as a row of standardcardboard boxes that have been secured, one after another, upona wooden structure stretching out on the playa. The heart ofTiny Tropolis lies within, and passersby will need to get in closeto experience the richness of this installation. Each cardboardbox contains a diorama constructed by a different individual intribute to the potential of expression for each of our internalcreative realities. Like the housing projects of Staten Island thatbrought together many of the artists that eventually composedthe Wu-Tang Clan, Tiny Tropolis exposes the multitude of ex-pressive beings living on top of and among one another in ournation's cities. Tiny Tropolis has a philosophical and literal ob-jective to build artistic community on the playa. It is truly com-munity-based- a collective project that funnels the artistic spiritof people across the country into the most celebratory- albeittiny- block party to hit the playa yet.

unnatural selection michael coyUnNatural Selection is an interactive "exquisite corpse" conceptrealized as a large, octagonal, artwork that rotates to form 512possible combinations. It is set in a sculptural kiosk-like struc-ture that allows people to play with it by turning cranks to con-trol the position of each segment of art thus creating newcreatures/characters with every turn. UnNatural Selection is asubtle way of illustrating mankind's increasing inf luence onnatural processes but it's mostly just for fun.

zark! quentin davisZark is a journey from the wide-open empty spaces of the playainto an intimate miniature hidden world. Zark appears to be ahuge caterpillar at a distance, glowing in the darkness. Insidethis organic architecture, participants will find and incongruousand ancient miniature ruin of playa mud brick buildings. Thisancient tiny lost civilization harbors an amazing secret hiddenbelow the surface.
