What do you think of the possibility of closing the re-use sheds?

The Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako (RDBN) is considering closing the re-use sheds at its solid waste management facilities. According to the RDBN, the role of re-use sheds has become “archaic and redundant.” Additionally, the public has not been following posted re-use shed rules, placing mattresses, electronics, small appliances, and broken items in the re-use area.

Dean Charlie

“I don’t mind them being opened. My family uses the re-use sheds.”

hilDa earl

“It’s stupid. I was able to furnish half of my house with items from the re-use shed. The re-use shed supports local businesses, reduces cost and waste.”

Kelly hoffos

“I’m against it. I have seven children and we rely on the re-use shed. We even get presents from it.”

renee Manweiller

“I go there often and I get stuff for my kids. If we didn’t have a re-use shed, these items would end up in the garbage.”

sCotty fielDs

“I don’t think they should close it. A lot of people make use of it.”

sharon Miller

“I’m against it. I’ve picked up a few items from there. It’s a good thing to have.”

JuDy niCholson

“I don’t want them to close. Everybody I know uses the facility.”

The RCMP and the British Columbia Conserva-tion Officer Service (COS) attended a call for ser-vice at 7 p.m. on Nov. 15 at the Colleymount Rec Site, located on the north shore of Francois Lake.

The RCMP and the COS found three Burns Lake residents - two adult males and one adult female - discharging firearms at the campsite.

One male and one female were issued tickets for illegal use of a firearm contrary to the Forest and Range Practices Act, a provincial statute. The sec-ond male was arrested for careless use of a firearm and released for provincial court in January 2015.

Staff Sgt. Grant MacDonald with the Burns Lake RCMP said people are allowed to bring firearms to a campsite as long as the weapons are safely stored.

"Using a firearm at a campground is not an ap-propriate usage of a firearm," he said.

Police seized the weapons consisting of riffles and a handgun and also found a small amount of marijuana. No criminal charges are pending involv-ing the marijuana due to the officer's discretion.

It has been 15 years since I wrote a commen-tary objecting to the B.C. government pushing aside its own hard-won treaty process to reach an unprecedented land-and-cash settlement with the Nisga’a Nation for their ancient Nass River territory.

My objection, and that of many others, was the imposition of a parallel

state with collectively owned land enshrined for all time. This was an ailing NDP government rush-ing to enable a property ownership system that has demonstrated little but failure and suffering around the world.

The Nisga’a are proving me wrong, and this was again demonstrated at a little-noticed ceremony at the B.C. legislature last week.

The B.C. government had just passed amendments to allow a gas pipeline through Nisga’a Memorial Lava Bed Park, the first co-managed provincial park in B.C. history. Another bill enabled the Nisga’a Lisims government to impose industrial property tax on liquefied natural gas production. Legal documents were signed so the Nisga’a legislature can do the same this week. In recent years, the Nisga’a disposed of concern about collective land restrictions by adopting a private property system. And Supreme Court of Canada decisions have repeatedly answered protests about the establishment of a parallel state – that’s what it is, so get used to it.

The Nisga’a have moved to assemble four fee-simple tidewater sites for LNG terminals, joining the Haisla Nation at Kitimat in reaching aggressively for a modern economy through gas export. The Nisga’a have partnered with TransCanada Corp. on a 900-km pipeline to supply the $11-billion LNG project led by Petronas for the Prince Rupert port. And they don’t intend to stop there.

“We want to be part of the Canadian business establishment,” said former Nisga’a Na-tion president Joe Gosnell.

The signing ceremony was briefly disrupted by one of a small group of Vancouver-based Nisga’a who have been using modern protest tactics against this decision. We weren’t con-sulted, it’s a desecration of victims of a volcanic eruption, it’s a threat to eelgrass beds, and so forth, say well-rehearsed young men with video cameras running. Nisga’a President Mitchell Stevens has patiently and repeatedly explained that Nisga’a legislature rules were relaxed to allow every hereditary chief to speak to elected leaders on this pivotal move. After that it received the required two-thirds majority support.

Gosnell, the revered chief negotiator who carried the treaty over the goal line in 2000, moved slowly with the help of an ornately carved cane to speak at a reception. He seemed genuinely surprised that he has lived long enough to see the fruits of generations of labour.

Gosnell recounted the 1887 paddling trip down the B.C. coast from the Nass Valley to Victoria to present the Nisga’a territorial claim, where the tribal leaders were turned away on the steps of the legislature by Premier William Smithe. It would take until 1910 for Prime Minister Wilfrid Laurier to promise a settlement, and until 1949 for Nisga’a Chief Frank Calder to be elected to the B.C. legislature. In 2000, when the treaty received royal assent in Ottawa, Gosnell took part in a ceremonial burning of the Indian Act and got to work on implementing self-government. And on Nov. 27, 2014, B.C. Liberal, NDP and independent MLAs voted unanimously to open the way to an industrial future for the Nisga’a.

“That’s what being alive means to me today,” Gosnell said. “You’ve got to have big dreams. Maybe all those dreams won’t come true, but at least you have the ability to dream big. And boy, are we ever dreaming big.”

Nisga’a prove their critics wrong

tom flEtchEr

Last Friday, Burns Lake held its lovely Christmas parade. A considerable amount of people came out in the streets to celebrate. If you weren’t in town last weekend for some reason, maybe I should mention that the wind chill was close to -30 C. Nevertheless, dozens of people were out waiting for Santa Claus to show

up, and I am certainly grateful for everyone who traded the comfort of their own homes to be out in the cold supporting a community event. People seemed eager to share smiles, have a hot chocolate served by the village council, listen to the Burns Lake choir sing captivating songs and watch the mayor light up the Christmas tree (of course I didn’t see much of the parade because I was inside a mascot costume and several children were yelling at me because I was out of candy for most of the event).

To be honest, I don’t think I’ve ever experienced the Christmas spirit like I have in this corner of the world. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had nice Christmases before, but it always in-volved some distant family members who only seemed to visit to point out that I was single and unsuccessful (well, that still remains the case, but at least now I am too far from home to be judged).

I don’t know if it’s all the snow, my neighbours putting up their Christmas lights, or that radio station that only plays Christmas songs all day long, but there’s definitely a holiday spirit catching on.

What really had me thinking about this was one of the stories we covered this week. Lakes District News followed the story of a life-saver dog and its owner, a senior citizen who struggles with type-two diabetes. The owner dropped her dog off at a kennel in Burns Lake to receive medical treatment out of town, and when she returned, she discovered that commu-nity members had donated almost $500 to help her take care of the animal. All this happened because of a warm-hearted kennel owner who posted on Facebook asking the community to donate $20 to support the dog and its owner.

What was interesting to see was that some of the people who donated had never met the dog or its owner before, and one of the donors wasn’t even from this town.

That was the perfect example of one small but inspired idea that touched other people’s hearts. One small gesture that made a difference in the life of a senior citizen - one who had just returned from surgery out of town and could have probably used some good news.

Did she absolutely need that money? Were there other more important causes people should have worried about instead? I am not sure, and maybe it doesn’t matter. What I do know is that the kennel owner stepped up to do what she felt was right in her heart, and that was why she had such an overwhelming response from the community. It was because other people could relate to that feeling. This is what Christmas is all about! It might just be about making a difference in the life of one person you know.

We all believe in different causes and we all have different values, but maybe that is a good thing. It means that we can use those different ideas to make sure our community will have the best possible Christmas this year. Maybe you can make a difference in the life of some-one you know, or maybe you can inspire people you have never met before.

So I dare you to also have an inspired idea this week, just like the kennel owner did. I dare you to make a difference in the life of someone you know and inspire other people to do the same.

So… what will be your good deed this Christmas?

What will be your good deed?

RE-USE from t P1

In addition, the reports says that each and every transfer station site in the regional dis-trict sees a lot of salvaging ac-tivity, both in the wood and in the metal piles.

“Many people have been seen climbing on top of the piles and salvaging for certain

items, which is dangerous and could result in serious injury,

for which the RDBN is liable.”

In an effort to investigate the behavioural patterns sur-rounding the use of the re-use sheds, RDBN’s environmental services staff completed an ob-servation project at the various waste management facilities across the region.

Carolynn Lane, sustainability assis-tant, visited each of the seven transfer station sites across the regional district.

Lane observed that dogs were on the sites at two different occasions; children were seen running around the re-use sheds; and a televi-sion was dropped off right in front of a “no electronics” sign.

“Unfortunately, the re-use sheds at RDBN solid waste management fa-cilities have become unmanageable, and public behaviour sur-rounding the use of the sheds is contrib-uting to continued verbal and physical abuse of RDBN staff and other members of the public,” Dou-gall said in the mem-orandum.

The report con-tinues to say that, “given the extent of the behavioural prob-lems, it is not a mat-ter of if, but of when someone is severely injured at a RDBN solid waste manage-ment facility.”

Overall, the use and role of re-use sheds in soil waste management, with the advent of indus-try recycling pro-grams, websites, free classifieds, and thrift stores has become

“somewhat archaic and redun-dant,” according to the Dou-gall.

Two op-tions re-garding the future of re-use sheds were pre-sented by

RDBN’s environmental ser-vices to the board of directors.

Option one included em-ploying additional staff to monitor and maintain the fa-cilities. Other regional districts in the province have indicated that adequate staffing, time limits and fees associated with deposit of items into the shed or a per item pick fee are key variables for a successful op-eration. However, additional staffing costs could add up to $506,085 annually between all transfer facilities in the region-al district.

Option two is to close the re-use sheds permanently and focus on educating the public on other available re-use and recycling opportunities, as well as promoting the concept of community garage sales and facilitating donation of large furniture items to residents in need through groups such as the Salvation Army.

A motion to close the re-use sheds permanently was not carried by the RDBN’s board of directors at the Oct. 23, 2014 board meeting.

Instead, a motion was car-ried to postpone the decision until such time that affected communities have been con-sulted. According to Dougall, the RDBN will be holding community consultations in the future regarding the use of re-use sheds, and only after the consultations the board of di-rectors will make a decision on the future of the facilities.

“The consultation process has not been determined yet,” said Dougall. “It will be some-thing that we look at and figure out in the new year [2015].”

In the meantime, the RD-BN’s re-use sheds will remain opened.

Just been listening to the news on t.v. some good and some not so good.

We are getting winter at last but we need the snow to protect the wa-ter lines. The forecast is for some very cold weather so we will just have to wait and see. They say it’s only fools and newcomers who forecast the weather.

The U.S.A. is sure having its share of bad weather, let’s hope they keep it there.

Nice musicIt’s nice to have the

Grassy Plains church choir drop in for a little hymn sing on Sunday afternoon. Helps us pass the time for us here.

On Nov. 26 at the Tweedsmuir House at 7 p.m. the residents and many parents and visi-tors were treated to the most delightful evening of music and singing by our younger genera-tion of up and coming entertainers and what an evening it turned out to be. What talent we have.

Thanks to Martina Zech-endorf. She is such a won-derful teacher and enter-tainer herself and you can tell the children love her.

This evening was called Recital Canada Music Week. The aim of Canada Music Week is to bring to the attention of the public through various means the im-portance of Canadian music. There is much more I have at hand re-garding how important this all is but I am short of space. Martina is one of my very good friends for many years and I al-ways enjoy her concerts. How very fortunate to have her wonderful talent and how generous she is in sharing it with us.

Our family have al-ways loved music. My mother was very much so. Brother Peter made big time with the piano and accordion. Dad played violin and I played guitar.

last week’s Lakes Dis-trict News printed in large letters ‘Beware of fraud in many forms.’ It’s still going on and big time. I keep on getting these phone calls during the night but there is no-body that answers. Once there was an answer but hung up. Some time ago I got one of those scams.

A lady was on the phone and told me of all the good things they had for me, a t.v. and mu-sic centre worth a pile of money, just a whole pile of things, too many to mention. I kept say-ing what’s the catch? No catch it’s all here for you. I told her to phone me in the morning so she

said ok but low and be-hold she phoned again. Same old stuff and then my card number, I had it figured it was a scam and big time. I kept on talking and trying to joke with her, she was getting confused and she said you don’t want this offer and I said no not interested and I could tell she was getting an-gry so I said goodbye have a good day.

I found out this was the perfect pen com-pany. I found out later on as one of my friends got taken. Also and he didn’t get any of the good things they prom-ised me. That was just a come along scam. All he got was a huge box of cheap ball point pens but he never told me how much they cost. One thing I wonder about is why these phone calls with no answer. Is this a joke or are they trying to wear me down. So far no cheque scams maybe later on, I hope not.

Winter is hereIt’s Saturday night

and it’s minus 17 so winter is upon us for sure now. Thank heav-ens for the snow to save the water lines.

It’s Nov. 29 and it’s minus 20, a good way to start out the day. For once the weatherman has hit the nail on the head. I have a gauge on the outside wall and it’s been right on at least so far. When I had the use of my legs this was the kind of a nice day for working.

Dad’s storiesSometime I would

like to write up some of my dad’s story of his life. He was a great story teller as he had such a full life. His first time in Canada was in 1904 and he got a job on a farm in Ontario. These were friends of friends in England. He stayed there about two years.

Then two members contracted T.B. and died of it. Dad then de-cided to follow the flow ‘go west young man go west.’ So he did just that and ended up in Calgary,

Alberta. Lots of work there. His first job was driving four mules on a scraper 15 miles out of Calgary then his story begins. What a life.

It seems Christmas is not too far away folks are already hanging lights and decoration their homes. I heard to-day there is some Christ-mas music on the radio so far I haven’t heard it but I am looking forward to it. Such a wonderful time and so special for everyone.

When I checked the calendar it’s just coming real close. December is starting next week. Christmas was so spe-cial in our home when we were growing up. Compared to today our Christmas was so very simple but still such a wonderful day.

A little poem No person has ever

added up the value of a smile,

we know how much a dollars worth and how much is a mile.

We know the distance

of the sun, the size and weight of earth,

but no one here can tell us how much a smile is worth.

JokeA doctor and a lawyer

were talking at a party. Their conversation was constantly interrupted by people describing their ailments and ask-ing the doctor for free medical advice. After an hour of this, the exas-perated doctor asked the lawyer, “What do you do to stop people from asking you for legal ad-vice when you’re out of the office?”

“I give it to them,” replied the lawyer, “and then I send them a bill.”

The doctor was shocked, but agreed to give it a try. The next day, still feeling slightly guilty, the doctor pre-pared the bills. When he went to place them in his mailbox, he found a bill from the lawyer.

Take care we want you around for Christmas. Always remember God loves you and so do I.

editor:I am writing to all of Burns Lake businesses and anyone else who like to

help with a Christmas project. I would like to have a free Christmas photo shoot including a makeover and hairstyles for anyone in need this holiday.

I would like to ask for the support and help of our community, Burns Lake with a few things to make all of this possible for the holidays. We will need a professional photographer, makeup artists, hair dressers, a photo printer, photo paper and picture frames. I am going door to door to hand out letters to get as much support and help for all residents of Burns Lake. Margaret Patrick Memorial Centre has already agreed to allow the this event to happen on Dec. 13, 2014.

We look forward to having you or any of your friends and family to come and join us on this fun and exciting event for the community of Burns Lake. Please feel free to contact Shannon Alec at 250-612-8396

editor:I am so disappointed to hear that our new hospital in Burns Lake, which has

cost so much money, is not going to have a maternity ward.  I think this is a shame, we need young people to stay in our little town.  How can young fami-lies stay when the mothers have to go away to have babies?  Between 1946 and 1959 I had three babies born in Burns Lake hospital.  All were fine and healthy and have grown up here.  My question:  What is the problem? and why can’t it be fixed?  Why can’t Northern Health help us to have a maternity ward?

Thank you for thinking about this for the future of Burns Lake.  Is this prog-ress not having a maternity ward?

Sincerely Mildred Durban

DRIVE TO WINTER CONDITIONSChristmas is almost upon us and with it comes travel...

so please drive safely. Here are some winter driving tips:

• Keep four seconds rather than two seconds between you and the car you are tailing; • Watch out for areas of black ice such as shaded areas, overpasses or bridges. One extremely bad area to always use caution is the overpass near Bednesti on the way to Prince George; • Avoid sudden moves with your vehicle and know how to handle a skid; • Plan extra time to get to where you want to go; • Read the owner’s manual regarding the maximum speed your vehicle can travel in four wheel drive; • Be extremely cautious when approaching highway maintenance vehicles such as snow plows and salt or sand trucks.

And remember that winter driving is all about traction. Use winter tires, sand bags and whatever else is at your

disposal to get more traction!

After hundreds of people lost their jobs due to the explosion at Babine Forest Products sawmill in 2012, the Lakes District Food Bank saw a significant increase in clients. Fortunately, at that time, the new clients were followed by a significant increase in donations.

Once the situation stabilized and workers started regaining their jobs, the donations to the food bank reduced drastically.

"People thought we were in great shape when we thanked them," said Candice Little, coordinator of Lakes District Family Enhancement Society. "But we are still alive and we're still trying to feed a lot of hungry people."

Although the donation of non-perishable food items has re-mained steady, the amount of money donated was reduced by 40 per cent in the 2013/2014 financial year, said Little. To make matters worse, the food bank has seen an increase of 10 per cent in the number of clients during the same period.

The food bank spends an average of $6000 to $7000 every two

weeks purchasing perishable items such as vegetables, fruits, bread and eggs.

Little said the food bank has already made some cuts such as eliminating "pudding, snack food for kids' lunches, cookies, and food with lower nutritional value" from the food boxes.

The organization operates partially on funds from a provincial gaming grant, but according to Little, the funds are "limited."

"That money only goes so far," she said.

Winter can also create a different set of challenges for the less advan-taged families since they are not fish-ing, hunting or cultivating gardens during that time.

"It's harder for people to sustain themselves during winter," said Lit-tle.

As an attempt to improve the situa-tion of the food bank, the Lakes Dis-trict Family Enhancement Society has started a campaign called Holi-day Spirit Funding Drive. The cam-paign is seeking to raise the profile of

On Nov. 25, Der-ren Heppner entered a guilty plea in a Burns Lake court room to charges of trafficking in moose meat under the Wildlife Act.

The guilty plea con-cludes an eleven-month investigation by the conservation officer Service into reports of moose meat being sold at the Lake Babine Na-tion gas bar.

Through the course of

the investigation, seven bags of dried moose meat were seized as well as a small amount of cash.   After hearing an initial sentencing po-sition from the crown, the judge sentenced Heppner to pay a fine of $750.

Despite  Heppner be-ing a Lake Babine Na-tion member, this court ruling is consistent with other cases in Canada. First Nations are per-mitted to harvest wild game meat for social and ceremonial use, but are restricted from com-mercialization.

Across British Co-lumbia it is illegal for anyone to sell wild game meat. Violations can be reported 24 hours a day to conserva-tion officers at 1-877-952-7277.

the food bank, and raise awareness to the fact that the food bank still needs the public's help.

"During Christmas time we typically think of the rest of the world and the people who are less fortunate than ourselves, but we forget to look at our own community," said Little.

From April 2013 to March 2014, the food bank was able to dis-tribute 1640 food boxes to disadvantaged children and families in the community, helping to feed an average of 161 adults and 81 children.

"We only feed them twice a month, but some of these people are hungry every day," said Little.

The Holiday Spirit Funding Drive campaign will run until Dec. 15, 2014, but the food bank accepts donations all year round.

Donations to the Lakes District Food Bank can be dropped off at Lakes Artisan Centre, Bulkley Valley Credit Union, Woods 'n Water, College of New Caledonia, Burns Lake Chamber of Com-merce and Village Insurance.

Donations can also be mailed to BOX 777, Burns Lake, B.C. V0J1E0. For more information, contact Candice Little at 250-692-9601.

Provincial environmental assessment certificates have been approved for

B.C.'s flagship liquefied natural gas ex-port project at the Port of Prince Rupert and two pipelines proposed to connect the region to gas fields in northeastern

B.C. to the North Coast. The $11.4 billion project led

by the Malaysian state-owned energy corporation PETRO-NAS is aiming to make its final investment decision by the end of this year. One of the certifi-cates issued is for the Prince Rupert Gas Transmission pipe-line, proposed to run 900 km from Hudson's Hope to the PETRONAS Pacific NorthWest LNG terminal.

The LNG port and pipelines must still receive federal, pro-vincial and local government permits before they can be-gin construction. The Pacific NorthWest LNG terminal at Lelu Island is still undergoing federal environment assess-ment, having received an ex-tension to deal with potential salmon habitat impacts at the mouth of the Skeena River.

Natural Gas Development Minister Rich Coleman visited

Malaysia this month at the invitation of PETRONAS officials to go over their project.

PETRONAS is leading a consortium that includes Chinese, Japanese, In-dian and Brunei investors for a pipeline and LNG processing in northern B.C. PETRONAS paid $5 billion last year to take over Progress Energy Canada, which has major shale gas holdings in northeast B.C. and Alberta.

Pacific NorthWest LNG received an-other boost last week when the Nisga'a Nation signed a benefits agreement with the B.C. government for the project. The B.C. and Nisga'a legislatures are pass-ing amendments to allow the Prince Ru-pert Gas Transmission pipeline to pass through Nisga'a Memorial Lava Bed Park.

The other certificate is for the West-coast Connector Gas Transmission pipeline proposed to run from the Fort St. John area to another LNG terminal at Ridley Island. That project is led by BG Group, which has signalled it may delay development because of new gas supplies from U.S. sites where the Brit-ish-based company also has LNG export plans.

Burns Lake Christmas parade brings fun and joyThe Burns Lake Christmas parade brought smiles to the faces of many children in town on Nov. 28. Despite the severe cold, many people traded the comfort of their own homes to wait for Santa Claus. The parade started at the Burns Lake Public Library and continued along Government Street until it reached Hwy. 35. After the parade, the community gathered at Pioneer Park for the Christmas light up. Village council served people hot chocolate and Babine Forest Products handed out goodies while the Lakes District Community Choir sang and spread the Christmas spirit. Mayor Luke Strimbold lit up the tree, and just like that, the Christmas season had officially begun.

A motor vehicle ac-cident involving two pick-up trucks took place east of Burns Lake sending two peo-ple to the hospital on Nov. 27.

"The investigation is in its early stages but it is believed that a west bound pick up lost control, crossed the centre line and was struck by another on-coming pick up," said Cpl. D.J. (Dave) Tyre-man, spokesperson for the RCMP.

Both drivers were taken to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. The road was closed for approximately two and a half hours.

Tyreman said that at the time of the accident, the highway was report-ed to be "snow covered with blowing snow.”

Curling lovers had a busy time over the weekend during the 43 annual Fireman’s Bonspiel in Burns Lake. The three-day tournament was held from Nov. 28 to 30. The winner in the A event was Saul’s rink, and Fields’ rink took the second place. The first place in B event went for Sullivan’s rink. McBride’s rink got the second place in that event. The winner of C event was Bell’s rink, and second place went to Partington’s rink. The Fireman’s Bonspiel was hosted by the Burns Lake Fire Department.

Many people also used that event as an opportunity to purchase a membership ticket for Omineca Ski Club. Also offering their products at the event were McBike and Sport from Smithers and JK Apparel from Burns Lake.

The Lakes District Community Choir has a surprise for you at this year's Christ-mas concert. For the first time, the audi-ence will be invited to sing along with the Hallelujah Chorus.

One of the most recognized pieces of music in the world, this selection from

Handel's "Messiah" is a traditional part of the choir's annual concert - but many more delights await you on December 14 at 2:30 p.m. at Immaculata Church, 248 Third Ave. Admission is by donation.

The first half of the concert the choir will feature the musical story "Mary, Did You Know?" Narrated by Paula Van Time, this blend of hymns, carols, and modern

praise songs leads us through the events of the nativity.

Following intermission, the choir and guest artists will present seasonal favou-rites both old and new, plus a carol sing-along. Please come and enjoy a refresh-ing break from the hustle and bustle of the season, and the delicious refreshments served at intermission.

Alberta actor, Christopher Hunt, played over 25 actors during the play When That I Was, including Jack Rice, Will Shakespeare and Queen Elizabeth. The play took place on Nov. 27 at the Lakes District Secondary School in Burns Lake. The world of Shakespeare came alive in this one-man drama through the memory of the narrator, Jack Rice. The audience was transported back in time to when the Puritans had closed the theatres. The play was co-written by Edward Atienza and John Mortimer. Prior to the play, Hunt provided some insights about the show to community members at the school library. He also answered questions about his career and Shakespeare’s life.

Burns Lake resident Shirley Lindroos recently dropped off her seven-year-old dog named Babe at Bakers Acres Kennels so that she could receive medi-cal treatment out of town.

Although she lives on a se-nior's budget, Lindroos makes sure her favourite companion gets regular grooming and the best possible care. Much of this care is due to the fact that Babe has actually saved her life several times. Lindroos has type two diabetes, and when her blood sugar is dangerously low, Babe can sense it and react, al-lowing her owner to take the necessary measures to improve her health.

Babe once woke her up in the middle of the night because her blood sugar was too low. She said that if Babe hadn't woken her up on time, it could have led to a diabetic coma.

Surprisingly, the Chihuahua Pomeranian mix has never been trained.

"She's an amazing dog," said Lindroos. "She knows when something is wrong with me."

Her dog also has many reasons to be thankful for. Babe was rescued from a puppy mill in troubling con-ditions when she was one year old.

"When I found her, she didn't know how to play and she was scared of everything," she said.

Baker Acres Ken-nels' owner Brandie Baker is familiar

with Lindroos' dedication to her dog and the history they both share.

After Lindroos dropped Babe off at the kennel on Nov. 21, Baker gave Babe a free grooming, but decided she needed to do more. She then posted on the kennel's Facebook page asking the community to donate $20 for Babe's future grooming appointments.

What happened next was that Baker received an overwhelming response from the community. Some people donated $100, others went out of their way to drop off donations at the kennel, and there was even a donation from out of town.

Within less than a week, community members do-nated $483 to make the Christmas of a senior citizen one to remember.

"I was blown away," said Baker. "I just couldn't be-lieve it."

Baker said she was overwhelmed, but held her ex-citement for seven days, not saying a word to Lindroos. She wanted it to be a surprise.

When Lindroos re-turned home from her medical treatment on Nov. 28, Baker stopped by for a visit. She was carrying a $283 cou-pon for a veterinarian clinic, and gift certifi-cates worth of monthly grooming appoint-ments up until Septem-ber 2015. Babe's owner could not have antici-pated such gesture.

"This is incredible," said Lindroos with pure gratitude in her eyes.

"Babe's worth it," she said. "I don't know what I would do with-out her."

WORD SEARCH

SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21: Sagittarius, your energy levels are high and there is nothing you can’t accomplish this week. Avoid extra caffeine because you’re already buzzing.

CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20: Find a balance between caution and careless-ness, Capricorn. You cannot control every situation, and this week you may have something unexpected come your way.

AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18: Aquarius, if you’re on the lookout for new work opportunities, look no further than your own supervisor for guidance. He or she may be your biggest ally.

PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20: You have boundless creativity, Pisces, and this week you get to channel it into a special project. Don’t overextend yourself until everything gets done.

ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20: Aries, expect to be called into action several times this week. You may prefer to avoid the spotlight, but that won’t be the case this week. Make the most of this opportunity.

TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21: Taurus, all of a sudden you are so busy it can be difficult to find a few moments to rest. Thankfully, you are able to keep up with all of the activity.

GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21: Gemini, seek advice from a trusted confidante as you contemplate a major lifestyle change. This person will provide valuable insight as you look to make the best decision possible.

CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22: Cancer, going solo on a project may not seem like the ideal situation. But you don’t want to be distracted this week, so going it alone is the best way to tackle the tasks at hand.

LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23: Leo, following your gut may not always work out, but this week everything works out for the best. Curb impulsiveness as much as you can, though.

VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22: Virgo, although you might be dreaming of a lavish vacation and an escape from the daily grind, it’s just not possible at this time. Start saving for this dream excursion.

LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23: Libra, although it’s noble to offer assistance to every-one you meet, you may be struggling to take care of yourself in the process. You must put your needs first.

SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22: A desire to detach from others and be entirely self-sufficient can have some challenges, Scorpio. You don’t need to give up independence to have the support of others.

Kathleen Muriel SmithMarch 30, 1930 – November 20, 2014

It is with profound sadness that we announce the pass-ing of our beautiful Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Aunt and Friend.

Kathy was a true Northern B.C. girl. She was born and raised in Giscome. She met Archie in 1946 and they were married on February 18, 1950. With the offer of a new and promising career, the young family moved from Giscome to Burns Lake in 1959 and spent 11 happy years enjoy-ing outdoor activities and the warmth and love of a small community. Archie built the family cabin on François Lake, where many happy memories are still being made. After 1 year in Houston the family moved back to Prince George in 1971.

Mom and Dad had a marvelous life together. Mom en-joyed staying home and raising the children. After Dad re-tired they travelled all over the world. They were part of the Snow Bird’s and went south every year for 3-4 months. As well, Mom and Dad were an amazing couple to watch on the dance floor.

Kathy was always very active in the community. She joined Eastern Star, her love for it shows by being a 50 year member. She was Worthy Matron in Burns Lake. Kathy also volunteered for cancer dressings, Hospital Auxiliary, the Hospital Thrift Shop, the Festival of Trees as well as numerous Eastern Star functions. Her help will be greatly missed. In her younger years, Kathy dabbled in painting classes and enjoyed curling, especially the bon-spieling part.

When making ends meet in the early years was a struggle, Mom was extremely resourceful. There was the berry picking, canning, a vegetable garden, baking, sew-ing, darning and homemade root beer for the kids in the summer.

Kathy will always be remembered for her impeccable fashion style, her smile, sense of humour, her feisty spirit, big hugs, love of socializing, doing crossword puzzles, her hands, and her devotion to Archie and her family. She was happiest when all of the family was gathered at her home. We cherish our memories of good food, laughter and mer-riment on these occasions. Thanks for the magic Mom.

Grateful for her love and special memories are her loving husband Archie of 64 years; Sons; Barry (Debi), Craig, Daughter Pamela Reimer, 9 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren( whose pictures covered every avail-able space on the walls and fridge), nieces and nephews. Pre-deceased by son Gary, son-in-law Ken Reimer, Fa-ther Duncan Neil, Mother Alice Neil, Sister Joleen Coster, Brother -in-law’s Robert Coster, Thomas Dilworth, Sister-in-law, Grace Dilworth.

Please join us at 11:00 am, on December 5th, for her service at Assman’s Funeral Chapel, 1908 Queensway St, Prince George, B.C. Luncheon to follow at the Masonic Hall, 480 Vancouver Street. In Lieu of flowers a donation in memory of Kathy can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Missing you already Mom.
