Another year has come and gone, and it is time again for Board elections. At our next meeting on May 15th at 7:00pm we will be holding elections. Please come and support your neighborhood association and consider running for a position. Serving on the board is a minimal time commitment, but goes a long way to serve our community. 2nd Annual Chili Cook-off Feeds 100+ Neighbors! Friday, March 23rd, was an evening we will remember for a long time as 70 adults and 40 students packed the BBC Multi-purpose Room. They enjoyed tasting from fourteen different chili recipes and chatting with their neighbors. Children had fun playing games and creating works of art. Luke Loeffler won the prize for Best Vegetarian chili. Maryanne Cohan won for Most Unique. Naomi Dockery won for Best Kid’s recipe. And, Dee Rainwater won Best Overall. The BBCNA will present a check for $250 to the school PTO to help meet student needs. (Photos by Heather Sinnott and Gary Stewart)

Easter Egg Hunt at Fir Garden Park Thrills Children! The BBC Neighborhood Association hosted an Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday April 7th at the newly renovated Fir Garden Park. It was a morning with grey and threatening skies but about 20 children showed up ready to hunt for candy-filled plastic eggs. The perimeter was marked out and the eggs carefully distributed within the “safe” area. At the “Go” the eager, happy children were on the hunt. In less than 10 minutes it was over but everyone had a good time. And, thankfully, the stormy weather waited until all the clean-up was complete. The downpour began soon after. Heather, who hosted the event, said she looks forward to doing it again next year for even more children.

A Treasure in Your Neighborhood By Cheri Martin – Humane Society SW Wash

ReTails Thrift Store is your neighborhood treasure hunting paradise. Voted “Best in Clark County” in last year’s The Columbian poll, ReTails will bring you back time and time again. ReTails is owned and operated by the Humane Society for Southwest Washington.

We’re located at 5000 E. Fourth Plain Blvd. Hours: 10-6 M-F and 10-7 Weekends. Telephone: 360-984-6060 It includes 20,000 square feet of amazing thrift shopping with clothing organized by color. Along with clothing, you’ll find housewares, linens, media and electronics. Rags with Tags are items with the original tags still on.

There’s also a book section with specific categories, a boutique with the “best of the best” items that are donated by our community and furniture. ReTails receives a large number of furniture items. Whether you want to add a new piece to your existing line up, outfit a new apartment or dorm room, ReTails is a great option. The store is displayed beautifully so customers can get lost in a shopping experience.

It wouldn’t be an HSSW store without adoptable animals. ReTails has cats available for adoption so you don’t have to travel to the adoption headquarters. If you belong to a group or organization that would

like to make ReTails an organized destination, contact the store to make arrangements. You’ll be welcomed by a staff team member, given shopping coupons and we will prepare some light refreshments. If you are cleaning up or cleaning out, ReTails will welcome your gently used items. Donation locations are at the store and at HSSW at 1100 NE 192nd Avenue.

March 20th BBCNA Business Meeting Summary Notes Chair, Heather Sinnott, opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance. The minutes

were not read, but were approved by a voice vote based on the summary in the

newsletter.

Old Business Treasurer’s Report: Shannon reported there have been no checks

written and the balance is unchanged at $2988.99.

New Business A location for a “street mural” was voted on. From three alternatives, the intersection of NE 155th Avenue and Poplar was selected. The other locations which may be painted at a later date are: NE 151st Avenue and Poplar and NE 151st Avenue and Sorrel. The locations of existing street murals in the city is listed on page 7 in this newsletter so we can visit them to get a better idea of what a mural looks like.

Expenses for the Chili Cook-off were approved by voice vote at up to $100. An amount up to $75 was approved for plastic eggs and candy treats for an Egg Hunt announced for the Saturday following Easter at Fir Garden Park.

The By-law Committee chaired by Steve Downing has recommended that the current Term Limits paragraph be removed at our May 15th Meeting prior to the election of officers. This is being announced during our March meeting because the By-laws also require a 30-day notification for any vote amending them.

The use of Gift Cards was discussed. Past practice in recent years has been to select attractive yards during the distribution of the May newsletters and provide a Thank You note that entitled the recipient to enter a raffle at the May meeting. The dual purpose was to recognize attractive landscaping in the neighborhood and encourage greater participation at the May election meeting. In 2017, we changed this practice and offered raffle tickets to everyone who attended excluding the BBCNA officers. We decided to offer raffle tickets to meeting participants at the May 2018 meeting with an opportunity to win one of ten $10 Gift Cards. Gift Cards for attractive yards may be offered in September but the issue was not voted on.

Based on Heather’s neighborhood surveys on Nextdoor.com, she plans to host “informal meetings” in the alternate months when no General Meeting is scheduled.

General Meetings are held 3rd Tuesdays in Sept, Nov, Jan, Mar and May.

Informal Meetings are held 3rd Thursdays in Oct, Dec, Feb, Apr, and June.
