The minutes of our May Committee meeting are on page 3 along with an update about the General Data Protection Regulations, which came into force on May 25th, and on pages 8 and 9 you will find reports on visits to Moor Pond Woods and to the Keukenhof Gardens and Amsterdam. There are also three items in Diary Dates and External Events you may find of interest. Finally, on the last page of this edition there is formal notification of August’s Annual General Meeting. It also incorporates a Nomination Form. Do please complete it if you would like to help with running your U3A. All items received will be acknowledged by e-mail. - Alan Comerie, Editor Burton Joyce & District Newsline Issue 11.06 | June 2018 Chairman’s Message As you will see with the attachments to Newsline, it is nomination time again. Over the past few years this has been panic time as we scrat about dragging people screaming and kicking to put themselves forward. No more! We welcomed 4 prospective new committee members to join us at the last committee meeting and I don’t think we frightened them off. Think the cake helped though! Please don’t let that stop you putting yourself forward though. I would love for my final AGM to include a proper election. That would be a first. Well U3A can certainly take one out of one’s comfort zone. On one Wednesday in May several of us were challenged by a stand-in aerobics teacher. She had been advised that we were perhaps a little more agile than our years might suggest and boy did she go for it. Several times I consoled myself with the thought that we were insured for such activities. Some of us took to the salsa dancing (think belly dancing without the jewellery) like moulds to a jelly but others – me mainly – recognised that I might not be Conservative in my politics but I am in my creative expression. Then that same afternoon our book group were into drugs and addiction. It was a harrowing read, the F word abounded, and the book elicited some thought provoking discussion. All goes to keep ageing at bay, or so I hope. As I mentioned at the last monthly meeting, if you are reading this and know that any members of your interest groups struggle to receive Newsline, please do make the effort to help them by arranging to pick one up direct from our Editor, Alan, or from the monthly meeting. We were delighted that all copies were accounted for last month but would like to stop having to nag! Enjoy the sunshine. -Judith Welcome to the June edition of Newsline,

Meetings ProgrammeMay Meeting ReportThe speaker at our April meeting was Geoff Parkinson, a retiredsolicitor who is a member of the Independent Monitoring Board. Hespoke to us about “Porridge”, not the TV series but in particular theprivately-owned prison at Lowdham, and also gave an overview ofthe Prison service. The talk did not start well however. Our speakerhad brought his own projector and laptop computer, whichunfortunately started to download and install a large operating systemupdate five minutes before he was due to begin. Eventually it did sohowever, the cuffs were off and the talk, aptly entitled “My Life inPrison”, began.

Geoff’s role as a volunteer for the IMB is to visit Lowdham Prison regularly and ensure prisoners are treateddecently and fairly. The IMB “team” covering Lowdham prison comprises 16 members, including one femaleand one Sikh. The majority are retired, simply because they are the people with more time available to carryout the work. The professional watchdog is of course HM Inspectorate of Prisons, which typically visitsunannounced every 2 or 3 years. Members of the IMB however, visit the prison every week and Geoffdescribed them as the Minister’s “eyes and ears”. They are given full access to all areas of the prison, to allpaperwork, and to health care notes (with the prisoner’s consent). The duties of the board are to satisfy itselfwith the state of the prison premises, the treatment of prisoners, to hear their complaints and requests, to tasteand inspect the food at least weekly, and to submit an annual report to the Ministry of Justice.

Lowdham is a Category “B” training prison capable of holding 920 people (current quota 915). A typical wingcomprises 62 cells and there is also a segregation unit of 24 cells and 2 strip cells for very difficult prisoners. An IMB member must be notified when a prisoner is admitted there (typically for poor behaviour or ownprotection) and must attend the segregation unit with 72 hours and every 14 days thereafter. Geoff alsoexplained how serious incidents such as hostage situations, large scale indiscipline and barricading, forexample, are dealt with nationally by specialist units known as “Tornado Teams” or the National TacticalResponse Teams.

The IMB members are unpaid volunteers. It costs c.£3m per annum and covers 150 prisons, 12 ImmigrationRemoval Centres, and 11 Short Term Holding Centres (at airports). The present prison population has almostdoubled in the past 15 years to c.85,000. We were shown a breakdown of the demographics by sex, nationality, and religion. Geoff also related anecdotes from his own experiences and freely gave his opinion on severalaspects many of us were thinking about. It was a very informative and illuminating talk.-Editor

By Members, For Members. What is this? It is of course about our 10th Anniversary Celebration day on Tuesday October 9th. Our publicitywill be limited to Newsline and just two advertisements in our Parish magazine not aimed at increasingmembership. Members in most of our Interest Groups will be showing the remarkable talent within our U3Ain a wide variety of different ways. The stage will be used most of the time. There will be about twenty standswith attractive interesting displays as the main feature in the big hall, but that will not be all. The CommitteeRoom behind the stage will have demonstrations of activities such as Boccia. In the Katherine Mitchell, smallhall we have a limited number of chairs and tables for enjoying socially the special tea and cakes provided byour skilled catering team. The silent film show in the same room will include a number of Interest Groupactivities not included above.

Real success will depend on our co-ordinators and Interest Group members showing novel ways of displayingtheir interests. We have more ideas to surprise you. Have you any really good surprise highlights we mightadd to attract every member to drop in sometime?-Malcolm Littlefair(For our Sub Committee)

Wedding Congratulations! Two of our members, David Hallam & Margaret Smith invited 25 familyand friends to their wedding aboard the P&O cruise ship Azura, sailingaround the Norwegian fjords.

The wedding day was going to plan until a sick passenger needed to beairlifted off the ship to hospital. This meant the ship was put in lockdownresulting in Margaret being stuck in the hairdressers with no electricity andDavid locked out of his cabin with nowhere to change. The weddingservice conducted by a rather stressed captain managed to be on time, thebride looked lovely, and the celebrations carried on throughout the evening.

Please join me in congratulating David and Margaret, pictured right, andin wishing them a long and happy future together.-Jenny Carr

Beer and Cider Tasting Group - Thursday April 19thThere were fourteen of us on the group outing this month, enjoying a pleasant and instructive evening of beer& cider tasting and personal development in Nottingham city centre, courtesy of the Pathfinder 100 bus.Wevisited The Bell in Angel Row and The Roebuck, just round the corner in St James’s Street. Both pubs werebusy but the service was brisk and all those who wanted to “take the weight off the sling-backs” were able tofind seats. Our group has visited The Bell several times already but this was our first trip to The Roebuck, Wetherspoonsflagship venue in the city centre. The Roebuck is a large, quite impressive and very well furnished pub withplenty of nooks and crannies to give it a bit of “atmosphere”, avoiding the shed-like feeling of some largerestablishments. In true Wetherspoons fashion, the pricing was very keen, with all beers sampled coming in atwell under £3 per pint. Only downside to this venue is the long trek upstairs required to visit the “rest-rooms”,apparently another typical Wetherspoons quirk.

All brews sampled in both pubs were very good to excellent but the Morlands Old Speckled Hen in The Bellwas so good that I have been moved to do a bit of research on the odd name. In 1979, The MG Car Companycelebrated the 50th Anniversary of its move from Edmund Road, Cowley in Oxford to Abingdon. They askedMorland & Co to brew a special commemorative beer for the occasion. The name chosen was “Old SpeckledHen”, which took its name from a strange car brought to Abingdon when the factory moved. The vehicle, originally built as an experimental car in 1927, was called the “MG Featherlight Saloon” made from cellulosedfabric stretched over a wooden frame, and was black speckled with gold. It became the factory’s generalrunabout, and as it chugged around the factory, people would say in their Berkshire tones “There gus the owdspeclked un….”

Next month (June 21st) we are returning the Southwell, visiting The Wheatsheaf and The Admiral Rodney. Ifyou’d like to join the group, put your name down on the sign-up sheet at the monthly U3A meeting or e-mailme at [email protected] Johnson

Bird WatchingOur visit to Bestwood Country Park was unfortunately rained off but the outingto Skylarks WLT in May was a great success with over 30 species identified.John Edwards led us around the reserve. It was cool but all the summer visitorswere there making the most of the abundant food supply. The summer sound ofswifts screaming in the sky was very evident. The wild flowers were alsoabundant and beautiful. We were fortunate that Roz was with us to identify anddescribe them.

The next outing on Friday 22nd June is to Rutland Water to see the Ospreys. Meet at 10 a.m. at the LyndonVisitor Centre. This will be our last meeting of the season and I would like to thank all the people who haveorganised and led our bird watching this year.-Keith Stafford

Ramblers 1Our 15 enthusiastic Ramblers 1 group recently did a 10km circular walk fromThe Manvers Arms at Cotgrave, passing through Tollerton, Normanton on theWolds and Clipston, appreciating the spring flowers, along with acres of vividyellow rape in the fields forming natural beauty in our wonderful countryside.

We stopped for a break at the Tollerton Pinfold (see photo) before walking backto Cotgrave at the pub for an excellent lunch. We were lucky with the weatheruntil the last few minutes when the heavens opened, and the wind was wild!! Itwas good to dry off in the pub.

Thanks to all who came along, yet another most sociable morning with BJU3A.-Steve Wilde

Visit to Moor Pond Woods, Friday 4th MayMoor Pond Woods are located betweenPapplewick, Linby and Hucknall within theLeen Valley. The site is important for itswildlife and archaeology and in 1999 the ParishCouncil decided to mark the Millennium bydeveloping it as a permanent recreationalresource.

We were met by Dr Stephen Walker from theFriends of Moor Pond Woods, who has writtena PhD on the early industrial revolution in theLeen Valley, and proved to be extremelyknowledgeable. We learnt how the RobinsonFamily in the 18th Century built 4 cotton mills in the area, harnessing water power by creating ponds andreservoirs and a network of connecting channels know as leats. Water into the header pond came from theRiver Leen. The River Leen itself originated on land owned by the then Lord Byron. He demanded royaltypayments for using the water and the Robinsons had to seek alternative means of powering their mills. A steamengine was purchased to supplement one of the mills. This was not very successful but was the first rotationsteam engine used in a cotton mill anywhere in the world! We also learnt that several hundred children werebrought to the mills from workhouses in Marylebone and Birmingham. By 1828 however, cotton spinning inthe area had finished.

There have been several archaeological excavations, as part of the project, and much evidence is now visibleto enable the layout and features of the site to be understood. We saw the remains of sluices, a brick shaft andthe water channels (leats). We also saw how the whole area has changed. Though the reservoir has beendrained, several ponds remain and whole area has become wooded and has returned to nature. Fundingreceived has established footpaths and information boards. One mill, Castle Mill, remains and is now a privateresidence.

Overall we spent a very interesting morning. We must thank Stephen for sharing his knowledge andenthusiasm with us, also Maureen Barker secretary of Friends of Moor Pond Woods who accompanied us.Thanks also to David Falkner for organising such an interesting outing for our U3A. Since our return, Glynand I have looked up Friends of Moor Pond Woods and found much more information as well as maps andphotos. (See www.moorpond.papplewick.org)-Jean and Glyn Lewis.

Tour to Keukenhof Gardens & Visit to Amsterdam 13th - 16th April 2018For the 41 in our party, the journey from Burton Joycedown to Folkestone for the Eurotunnel train began at 6a.m. in pouring rain. After the brief channel crossingonboard our Silver Service coach we started on the225-mile journey from Calais to our hotel on theoutskirts of Schiphol Airport where we enjoyed awelcome evening meal at our excellent four-star hotel(so many remarked on how comfortable were the beds).

The next day was our big day at Keukenhof Gardens, which cover 79 acres with not only the attractiveformally planted beds, but also the floral displaysstaged inside the numerous pavilions, superbly andskilfully arranged, including roses, orchids and tulipsin vast profusion and at their absolute best. Thetypically-Dutch windmill in the gardens was in full sail too.

The prime aim of this visit was to see KeukenhofGardens at their best during its limited season of 8 weekswhen it is open to the pubic, so we went in the middle ofthis period in hope. Just as here, the weather in Hollandduring last winter and early spring was very cold and wet, resulting in the flowering season of the 7 million bulbsplanted by hand last autumn, being about two weeks laterthan expected. Fortunately, warmer weather just beforeour visit resulted in blooms opening. We were notdisappointed, for it meant there were plenty of narcissusfrom the 700 varieties growing in the gardens still inflower, as well as tulips, hyacinths, chionodoxa andmany other species. The aim of Keukenhof is toshowcase the Dutch bulb industry and it has been doing

so since 1949. Around one million people visit during the 8 weeks season and we saw coaches from as farafield as Croatia.

After a long day at Keukenhof we all enjoyed an evening meal together and at a restaurant in a village only acouple of miles from the hotel, where we could relax and socialise in readiness for our visit to Amsterdam thenext day.

About half the group went on the two excursions, oneof which was an early morning canal boat cruise, while the city was still quiet. After that was a mostinformative visit to a diamond polishing factory, where we were shown diamonds from the rough topolished individual 1 carat stones worth over €30,000(sadly out of our price range). In the afternoon was avisit to a clog and gouda farm in the countryside.Clogs appeared like magic carved from a solid blockof wood. Cheese making was explained before thetasting session began and we also saw the Friesiancattle providing the milk for the cheese.

The remainder of the group visited landmarks, museums and galleries, including the Ann FrankHouse and Van Gogh Museum containing theworld's largest collection of his paintings, includingWheatfield with Crows, The Yellow House, SunFlowers and Self Portrait.

Our return journey home was hindered by trafficcongestion around Rotterdam, which resulted inmissing our Eurotunnel train connection by only afew minutes, then having to wait five hours foranother connection, which delayed our return home.

From comments I have received, the group enjoyedthe mini-holiday and some have asked where are wevisiting next!-Alwyn Foster.

Gedling Borough Council Seniors Council: Seminar on Social PrescribingThe underlying rationale for Gedling Borough Council’s Senior Council is the combating of loneliness andisolation among older residents of the borough. The members of the Seniors Council and those agencies whoare associate members are all involved in helping others to build up resilience through the range of interestsand activities they represent.

Social prescribing is defined by the King’s Fund as the referring by primary care professionals to local,non-clinical services. To complement referral by GPs, practice nurses, community nurses and care co-ordinators, Gedling Borough Council is now a partner in a pilot project involving Seniors Council members,as “community navigators”, in encouraging other older residents of the borough to take part in the wide rangeof social activities and services available.

A full-day meeting of the Seniors Council was held on 27th April 2018 to discuss in detail the design of theGBC Social Prescription pilot project. The agenda was as follows:

● An overview of Social Prescription in Nottinghamshire by the NHS senior project manager for GreaterNottingham Self-Care.

● An introduction to Age UK Social Prescription work in Gedling, including an Ageing Well case study.● An update by the Seniors Council working group on the Older People’s Directory.● An introduction to the Gedling Borough Council Social Prescription pilot project, followed by a round-

table discussion workshop on the proposed design of the service.

The whole event was positive, forward-looking and uplifting, a welcome antidote to the somewhat negativeambience encountered at times by “seniors”.

As was clear at the meeting, the U3A ethos epitomises the principles of social prescribing. Members of BJU3Awho would like further details of the day’s proceedings are welcome to contact me [email protected] Whitfield, BJU3A representative on and vice-chair of GBC Seniors Council
