The latest plans for the £20m upgrade of the A614 - which Nottinghamshire County Council say “aims to unlock the economic potential of north Nottinghamshire” - have been discussed in-depth at a recent council meeting.

The secretary of transport announced last October that funding would be allocated to the council for the scheme following its bid to improve six junctions along the A614 and A6097 between Lowdham and Ollerton.

The scheme aims to support planned housing developments in Bilsthorpe, Ollerton and Blidworth, reduce peak-period traffic congestion for the benefit of commuters and local businesses, and improve road safety.

Detailed designs are being worked up on the junction improvements, but current proposals include...

• Enlarging the Lowdham roundabout with additional approach lanes on the A612 from Burton Joyce and Southwell.

• Enlarging Ollerton roundabout to create a wider island and entry lane approaches to reduce congestion, particularly during the busy peak periods. Over 30,000 vehicles use the roundabout each day.

• Adding traffic signals to the Mickledale Lane and Deerlane Lane junctions in Bilsthorpe to improve traffic flows and road safety at these locations

• Widening the A614 approaches at the White Post roundabout

• Creating a roundabout at the A614/A6097 Warren Hill junction to simplify its operation and reduce accidents

Councillor John Cottee, chairman of Nottinghamshire County Council’s Communities and Place Committee, said: “The A614 forms the spine of the county, so this significant upgrade will support new growth and investment along the route for the benefit of local residents and businesses. The design of the scheme is progressing well

and we look forward to sharing firm proposals with the public to gain their feedback over the summer months.”

The council is currently working with key stakeholders at Ollerton and Lowdham roundabouts as these junctions are the most complex and largest in terms of scale of works and land required. A number of public consultation events are being planned for this summer in advance of the planning application being submitted in December, which will allow local people to make comments and discuss issues with the council.

The council will be submitting its business case to the Department for Transport in May, with the potential to start the improvement on site in April 2021. The remaining funding for the project will be coming from the council, section 106 contributions from proposed developments along the route, including a proposed development at Edwinstowe, and Community Infrastructure Levy money.

Council say that £20m A614 upgrade plans are ‘progressing’

Burton Joyce & Bulcote Women’s Institute had a bit of a do in the village to mark 100 years of the WI in Burton Joyce & Bulcote.

An afternoon tea was held to celebrate the first meeting of 78 ladies in 1919.

The WI county chairman, Pam Stoddard and vice-chairman, Helen Rose, kindly came along to join this

celebration and a great time was had by everyone who attended.

Originally, the ladies met in the Men’s Institute.

However, by 1925 the ladies had raised £1,500 to enable Burton Joyce Village Hall to be built on land donated by a Mr Hearnshaw.

And to this day, it is still very much our meeting place.

A new on-demand delivery service in Nottingham is linking up with local charity, the Friary. Pucho, which launched on 1st April, say they will run “daily delivery-based errands to save you time and provide optimum convenience for the residents of Nottingham”.

The hyper-local Nottingham-based logistics company has collaborated with the Friary in order to help address the homelessness issue. Their 50p campaign will be a city-wide initiative which will allow Pucho customers to be part of the solution and help to eliminate homelessness in Nottingham. For every order that Pucho receives, 50p will go towards IT services offered by the Friary.

Pucho says their mission “is to give back time to its customers by providing delivery-related tasks on behalf of its customers, allowing them to free their time for matters that deserve their attention”.

Ashmita Mangharam, chief operations at Pucho, said: “We do our best to improve our customers’ lifestyle. Time is a commodity we all want more of and have a limited amount of.

“We understand that people are busy with mundane tasks that they absolutely cannot ignore. So, what if customers could get things done on the go, while they are busy with matters that deserve more of their time and attention.”

Sam Crawford, who is the chief executive at the Friary, told the Local News: “We are incredibly grateful to Pucho for launching their 50p campaign.”

Business aims to help keep people away from homelessness A group of friends are holding their

second charity ball in memory of one friend who sadly lost her battle to breast cancer and in celebration of another who won her battle with the disease.

Samantha Black, a mother of four, passed away in December 2016, at just 45 years old.

Earlier that year, in June 2016, Eloise Dobson was also diagnosed with breast cancer at just 37.

Thanks to treatment at the Nottingham Breast Institute, Eloise, who is also a mother of four, went on to make a full recovery.

Eloise, her sister and a group of their and Samantha’s friends are now organising their second charity ball in support of the Nottingham Breast Institute, which is based at Nottingham City Hospital.

They want to thank them for their care of the friends.

Last year’s ball raised a phenomenal £22,000 towards a new digital mammography machine

at the Breast Institute. This year’s ball will be held at Colwick Hall on Friday 17th May and is once again being branded the Black and Green Ball, in memory of Samantha Black and in celebration of Eloise, whose maiden name is Green. This year’s theme with be fairytale.

A spokesperson for the group of family and friends said: “The results of the 2018 ball were phenomenal.

‘We set out to raise £15,000 and ended up raising more than £22,000. Now we want to make 2019 even better and have set

ourselves the incredible target of raising £25,000.

“The heartache and devastation caused by the loss of Samantha and the forever gratefulness of Eloise’s recovery has only provoked our determination to fight back at cancer and celebrate life.

“Our Sam was gorgeous. Her cancer journey was long but she was such a courageous lady.

“Her battle was fought full of humour and love for all that had the pleasure to travel this path with her.

“Sam had a huge heart and joined her friends together to make the family we have become.”

The money raised at last year’s ball went towards funding a new state-of-the-art digital mammography machine at the Nottingham Breast Institute. Around 4,000 women’s lives are saved every year because of early detection of breast cancer through screening, and this new machine aims to make the process quicker and easier.

Tickets for the ball costs £50 each, which includes a drinks reception, two-course meal and live entertainment. There will also be a raffle and auction on the night to raise further funds. Prizes at last year’s ball included golf days and a trip to Dublin.

For more information, tickets, or to promote the event in your local business, please visit the website by logging onto facebook.com/blackandgreenball or you can also send an email to [email protected].

In February, the banking protocol saved a lady in Nottinghamshire from sending £17,500 abroad to someone she’d never met. The bank picked up on the suspicious transaction and called the police. With assistance from the fraud protect team, safeguarding measures have been put in place to ensure she doesn’t fall victim to this type of scam again. She had been communicating with this person for around six months and he’d started requesting money from her. He’d assured her he was going to come to England to be with her.

One of the problems the police face with romance fraud victims is that they’re often embarrassed and ashamed, and sometimes in denial.

This sometimes stops victims coming forward and reporting what has happened to them. You should never be embarrassed or ashamed if you’re a victim of any type of fraud. We actively encourage people to report scams to Action Fraud because if the police don’t know about it, we can’t help others to stop falling victim.

The Fraud Protect Team find that these romance scams usually follow a similar pattern. Someone will make contact, either through a dating site or from a random friend request on Facebook. Fraudsters look for vulnerabilities in profiles to help identify their targets, so if it is publicly available that you’re divorced or widowed for example, this can be a target for fraudsters.

We also find that romance fraudsters usually pose as someone working abroad, either in the military or on an oil rig. This gives them an excuse to not meet up with the victim face to face. Fraudsters want to quickly come off the dating site messenger and switch

to other social media, texting or email, claiming it’s easier that way. This is to hide the site’s spam protection service from detecting their grooming tactics and requests for money. The Fraud Protect Team recommend staying on the dating site messenger service until you’ve at least met in person. If the subject of money is raised, report their profile as spam.

Do your research. Take the images from the dating profile and do a reverse image search on the website tineye.com. If that image appears anywhere else on the internet, you might just stop yourself from falling for a Fauxmance. Speak to friends and family about your online dating. If they think something isn’t right, trust them. Fraudsters are quick to show affection and love - and this can be made within days or hours, so be cautious.

You have to have met someone to grow to love them. Be wary of excuses why the person can’t video call or speak on the telephone.

With technology around the world, there shouldn’t be an excuse why they can’t. Beware of the sob story. Someone telling you how much they want to visit, but need money to pay for tickets, visas, medical expenses for ill family members, discharge fees from their current job or for essential goods. Beware of any reference to repayment in gold or diamonds.

Never agree to send money to, or receive money from someone you’ve not met. Don’t become a money mule. A money mule is a person who transfers money acquired illegally through a courier service or electronically on behalf of others. This is money laundering, which is a criminal offence. This is how easy it is for victims to become suspects.

If you believe you might have been a victim of a romance scam or any other kind of fraud, please report this to Action Fraud. You can do this either online at the website actionfraud.police.uk or by calling 0300 123 2040.

Fraud warning as victim almost loses £17,500 to romance scamRising local teenage tennis player Roan Jones was awarded a £500 cheque at a charity lunch.

It was held in aid of SportsAid to help raise money to support the next generation of emerging British sports stars.

The 15-year-old began playing tennis at the age of very young age of four and finished second in the national finals for under-16s last year.

In 2018, Roan also competed in the Road to Wimbledon international tournament, beating India’s number one ranked player to finish in second place.

The up-and-coming player is now competing in British Tour events against adult players who are on the cusp of turning professional.

Roan was presented with the cheque by hockey star and Paralympian Laura Sugar, who was the guest speaker at the SportsAid lunch held at Trent Bridge.

Nottinghamshire business professionals also raised £730 for the national charity at the event, which was sponsored by law firm Nelsons, Yorkshire

Bank, Musson Liggins and Trent Bridge. The money will go towards providing financial support to local, talented, young people who have no other access to vital funding to assist them with training and ultimately enable them to reach their sporting potential.

Tim Lawler, chief executive of SportsAid, said: “SportsAid provides the country’s brightest young sporting prospects with

financial support, recognition and personal development opportunities at a crucial time in their careers.

“We are very grateful to everybody who attends the SportsAid lunch in Nottinghamshire as their fundraising efforts are so important in enabling the charity to make a major difference to athletes, just like Roan, in pursuing their ambitions.”

Peter Stapleford, commercial relationship manager at Yorkshire Bank who chaired the lunch, told the Burton Joyce & Lowdham Local News: “SportsAid is a fantastic charity, which helps athletes progress in their chosen sport.

“We are very proud to be able to continue our support of these young people and help make their dreams become a reality.”

People across Nottingham are being encouraged to make a date to join Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life. This year, for the first time, Cancer Research UK is inviting everyone in the area – women, men and children - to join the Race for Life.

There are events for people of all ages and abilities taking place at Victoria Embankment on Sunday 2nd June and Holme Pierrepont on Saturday 7th September.

Lorna Hartley, Cancer Research UK’s Nottingham event manager, said: “Our Race for Life events are fun, colourful, emotional and uplifting. They help people with cancer by raising money for research, including clinical trials, which give patients all over the Midlands access to the latest treatments.

“Our Race for Life events have been women-only since they started over 25 years ago. We now feel the time is right to open them up so that everyone - women, men

and children – have the chance to participate together. You don’t have to be sporty to take part. You don’t need to train or compete against anyone else. All you need to do is go to the Race for Life website, pick an event, sign up and then have fun raising money in whatever way you like.”

Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is an inspiring series of 5k, 10k,

Pretty Muddy and Pretty Muddy Kids events, which raise millions of pounds every year.

Lorna continued: “The Race for Life is a powerful, inspirational movement which unites participants in the East Midlands with the whole of the UK. Taking part in our Race for Life events enables like-minded people to get together and remember loved ones lost to cancer or celebrate the lives

of those who have survived. They are helping to make a difference to people with cancer right now. One in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some point during their lifetime. Sadly, this means nearly everyone is touched by the disease, either directly or through a loved one or friend. We’re urging mums, dads, nans, grandpas, brothers, sisters, friends and workmates to show their support by joining the Race for Life. It’s a perfect example of everyday people doing an extraordinary thing – uniting in a common cause to beat cancer.”

Thanks to everyone who raises money, Cancer Research UK can fund research to fight 200 types of cancer. The good news is more people are surviving the disease than ever before. Cancer survival in the UK has doubled since the early 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress. To enter Race for Life today visit raceforlife.org or call 0300 123 0770.

Make a date to join Race for Life in NottinghamThe Environment Agency’s National Coarse Fish Farm near Calverton produced a record-breaking number of fish in 2018. Over half a million (520,819) fish were produced in 2018, compared with 358,552 the previous year, which is an increase of over 30%.

In 2018, the fish farm produced 11.6 tonnes of strong healthy fish, an increase of 22% from the nine tonnes it produced in 2017. The average size of each fish also increased on previous years. In 2018, the average weight of the 18-month-old fish was 45 grams each – an increase of 60% from 18 grams each in 2013.

In 2018, the fish farm also stocked out almost seven million (6,905,000) advanced reared larvae into the wild. The figure increased from six million in 2017.

The fish and larvae are used to replace stocks lost to pollution or following habitat or water quality improvements; to improve stocks where natural reproduction is low;

and to help create fisheries in areas where there is a shortage of angling opportunities.

Kevin Austin, head of fisheries at the Environment Agency, said: “The fish and larvae produced by the National Coarse Fish Farm play an important role in the work of the Environment Agency and its partners to restore, improve and develop sustainable fisheries in

England. All of the fish farm’s work is funded by income from fishing licence fees, so it’s great to see it setting new records for the number and weight of healthy fish.”

Alan Henshaw, team leader at the National Coarse Fish Farm, said: “The size and weight of the fish has also been outstanding and we have succeeded in smashing all of our production records.

“We have achieved these record-breaking figures despite the difficult conditions that resulted from the hot, dry summer of 2018. We take great care in ensuring that every fish is fit for purpose when stocked out into the wild. During their 18 months at the farm, they are trained in flowing conditions while being grown in the earth ponds.”

Local heating installer Nottingham Gas Services has expanded its range of gas boilers to include Which? Best Buy models from German heating manufacturer, Viessmann.

Steve and James Grice - and the team at Nottingham Gas Services - are fully trained and equipped to fit the full range of Viessmann gas boilers, six of which have been

named by Which? as Best Buys for the past two years because of their exceptional reliability, build quality and ease of repair.

Steve said: “We pride ourselves on our customer service and that includes making sure we’re offering people the best appliances on the market.

“Viessmann products are extremely well made and energy efficient.

“They’re a premium product and save customers money in the long run because of lower fuel bills and repair costs.

“We’ve already begun fitting them locally and our customers are very happy with them.”

At just over 100 years old and still family-run, Viessmann is a household name in Germany.

It has over 12,000 employees around the world and is one of the fastest-growing heating brands in the UK.

The company’s experts are even playing a leading role in government initiatives to make British homes more energy efficient.

“Viessmann products have won a lot of awards and their after-sales service is second to none,” continued Steve.

“But it’s important to use an installer who’s trained to fit them because every brand is different.

“We can give the right advice to ensure customers get the boiler that’s right for their home and lifestyle.

“The sooner people upgrade their boiler to a super-efficient modern system, the sooner they will begin saving money on their fuel bills. It doesn’t make financial sense to put it off.”

German know-how from local gas experts saves fuel billsBy Kenneth Curtis (solicitor at Curtis Parkinson Solicitors

Dealing with wills and inheritance, especially knowing how and when to bring a claim against an estate, can be a complicated business. Circumstances and relationships change over time and the legal documentation may not reflect the situation as it really is when a person you are close to dies.

Pursuing claims against someone’s estate: The Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependents) Act 1975 (Inheritance Act) allows certain applicants to make a claim for ‘reasonable financial provision’ from an estate. This applies where financial provision has not been made under the deceased’s will or in cases where they die without a will (where the Rules of Intestacy apply).

Who is entitled to make a claim? Those eligible to make a claim from an estate include a spouse or civil partner, ex-spouse or ex-civil partner, a child of the deceased

or someone treated as a child of the family by the deceased, a cohabitee who has lived with the deceased ‘as husband and wife’ for a period of two years ending on the deceased’s death and a person who was financially dependent on the deceased.

Are there legal time limits for an Inheritance Act claim? If you are making a claim under the Inheritance Act for reasonable financial provision, you have six months from the date of the grant of probate to bring a claim, or letter of administration if there is no valid will. This limitation applies to all applicants whatever their relationship to the deceased. Remember, six months is not a long time in the scheme of things. If the estate has been distributed this can make it much harder to acquire any of the estate assets that may be due to you. Additionally, it’s quite possible that you may need time to prepare the claim and speak to other parties involved before the application proceeds to court.

Do I have the power to make a claim outside the time limits? Notwithstanding the rules mentioned above, there are circumstances where the court will grant permission to make a claim out of time. You will need to explain to the court the reasons for the delay and obtain the court’s permission.

The importance of case law: Two recent cases shed light on how claims under the 1975 Act remain complex, at least for the time being.

In the first case, Cowan v Foreman [2019] EWHC 349, the English High Court decided not to allow an extension of the six-month statutory period for a widow who had brought a claim for reasonable financial provision under the 1975 Act against her late husband’s estate. This was despite an agreement between the parties that attempted to circumvent the deadline. This case appeared to reinforce the court’s strict approach to statutory deadlines in cases of disputed inheritance.

However, a little over a week later in the Bhusate v Patel & Or [2019] EWHC 470 ruling, chief master Marsh surprised the majority of legal professionals by granting permission to bring a claim under the 1975 Act despite the claim being issued over 25 years after the six-month deadline had expired. The claimant was deemed “effectively powerless” after the husband died without a will (intestate) in 1990. The absence of agreement or engagement by the deceased’s children, who avoided the issue and actively obstructed the sale of the house, had meant the claimant could not claim early under the six-month rule.

Our advice: Act promptly. Seek professional legal advice early and work on the assumption that an out-of-time claim is unlikely to be permitted. Your prospects of success will be much greater if you do. Please feel free to call us on freephone 0800 056 6042 or contact us via our website curtisparkinson.com/contact.

Motorists who drive less than 7,000 miles a year could be paying over the odds for car insurance, according to new research from By Miles, the pay-by-mile car insurance provider, and MoneySuperMarket. The analysis of 2.5 million quotes highlighted that UK motorists driving between 5,000 and 6,000 miles a year pay an average of £233 more for their car insurance than those driving up to 12,000 miles. Last year, By Miles launched the UK’s first real-time pay-by-mile car insurance policy as a fairer alternative for lower mileage drivers. Policyholders pay a fixed annual fee to cover their car whilst it’s parked. After that, they simply pay for the miles they’ve driven at the end of each month.

Tom Flack, editor-in-chief at MoneySuperMarket, said: “It’s in our DNA to help drivers find the best deal on their car insurance, so it was a no-brainer to offer pay-by-mile insurance.”

By Miles policies are fully comprehensive and your no claims discount is guaranteed as standard. There’s also a handy app that can scan your car for faults and remind you where you parked it. The full analysis can be read at bymiles.co.uk and suggests that 19 million UK motorists (those who drive less than the UK average of 7,134 miles a year) are in danger of being overcharged for their car insurance

Look at this photo with its beautiful display of summer-coloured flowers and fantastic green-striped lawn and then imagine the same photo with a lawn full of moss, weeds and patchy, stressed grass and you can see why a healthy lawn is so important to a garden.

For most gardens the centrepiece is the lawn and if it is in good condition you will find the extra hard work and effort to keep the rest of the garden in good shape much more worthwhile. Spending hard-earned money on planting and garden accessories can be expensive, but it will seem money well spent if the end result is a garden that you can be proud of.

The reward of having friends and family visit and make favourable comments about your house and garden gives you a real feel-good factor and there is nothing better than eating or sitting outside looking out onto your own well maintained outdoor area. However, a lawn is not easy to get or keep in good condition as the products available to the general public can be expensive, not easy to apply and inferior to the ones available commercially and other essential lawn operations like aeration and scarification can be difficult and labour intensive if not done correctly.

It is a fact that there are many people who have spent a lot of

time, effort and money attempting the above and end up making the lawn look worse than when they started.

The much easier option is to contact Prograss, your local, professional, qualified, independent lawncare company. By getting Prograss to take care of your lawn means you will have more time to do other things in the garden and it may even save you money because often the cost of using Prograss is less than buying the products or hiring the machinery.

Prograss use commercial, non-scorch, slow-release fertiliser products that are designed to improve not only the health of the grass but also the soil condition. All products Prograss use are child and pet-friendly.

Weed and moss control is a lot more difficult than it used to be as a lot of the product has quite rightly been banned because it was not environmentally friendly.

The products Prograss use are as safe and effective as is on the market and are diluted down to

the minimum level that it takes to do the intended job and can only be applied by trained, qualified operators.

Mechanical work such as hollow tine aeration and scarification is done using heavy-duty commercial machinery by trained, skilled operators so you can be assured the job will be done properly.

If you would like a free, no-obligation lawn health check and quote by Prograss, please call 01949 837367 or visit the website at pro-grass.com.

Prograss: Why a nice lawn is essential to a gardenThe soft warmth of May sunshine and showers provides ideal weather for growing and gardening. There are pots and hanging baskets to plant up and lawns to encourage into thick, lush growth for summer games and spread-eagled relaxation. Inspiration is not limited to your own plot as you can find creative ideas from national garden shows and, of course, the gardens open to the public in our own locality.

Beds and Borders Stake tall growing perennials such as delphinium, lupin, peony, Michaelmas daisy, japanese anemone and foxtail lily. This will ensure stems remain upright and will not fall foul of windy weather. An organic mulch applied around the root area of perennials will help to keep soils moist and plants thriving. Buy your bedding plants of choice early in May and harden them off in your back garden. Keep them watered well and give them a fortnightly liquid feed. Placed close to a south-facing wall they

will gradually get used to colder conditions and you will be able to cover them easily with newspaper if a frost is forecast in the run-up to planting out.

Patio Tubs & Baskets Potted tulips will be in flower and lilies will be growing taller now and may need staking to prevent wind damage. Three or four stakes around each pot are a good idea as you can then hold all the stems upright by twisting twine between each upright. Beware the larvae of the red lily beetle that may be

eating their way through the foliage of your glorious lilies. You can recognise them by the sticky black frass they carry on their backs to protect them from attack.

It’s time to plant up growing bags and patio containers with decorative flowers and productive fruit and salad vegetables. It is still possible for late spring frosts to be felt during the first half of May, so make sure you have some fleece or newspaper handy to cover your tomatoes, peppers, geraniums and petunias if the weatherman

forecasts freezing temperatures. The Giant Planter are the best growing bags to use for tomatoes and other vegetables such as peppers, aubergines and lettuce.

Lawncare Mild, damp weather is normal for May and as a result lawns should be growing strongly. A weekly cut with your mower is almost always needed as this is the time of the year that grass growth hits its yearly peak.

For a great-looking lawn don't cut the grass less than 2cm or you will risk putting it under stress.

For lawns that take a lot of wear and tear the height is best kept to 4cm to 5cm (2in), so that each plant is strong enough to withstand hectic play from adults and children.

Garden Diary is written by John Draper of Greener Gardens, your local independent lawncare specialist. For help with all aspects of your lawn call us 0115 837 8439 or visit greenergardens.co.uk.

"I know nothing - I don’t even know what my own money’s invested in... You don’t know what it’s like for me to go on working in the dark, spending everything I make, as I make it."

This 1924 family drama by suffragist Githa Sowerby explores the struggles of an independent-minded woman in what was still very much a man’s world.

This amateur production of "The Stepmother" is presented by special arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH LTD.

THE STEPMOTHER

By Carol Fearria Chair of the Nottinghamshire Schools Netball Committee

The Nottinghamshire Schools’ Netball Committee were delighted to launch the presentation of a special award, the Gill Barradell Trophy, at the County Under-12 netball tournament held recently at the Nottingham Emmanuel School in West Bridgford.

The committee wanted to pay a special tribute to Broxtowe’s Gill Barradell who gave much of her life to netball and they were delighted

that her husband Mick Barradel, together with the family, agreed to present the crystal glass trophy.

Eighteen secondary schools entered the competition and after the first rounds, the West Bridgford School team were congratulated for scoring the most goals.

This is to be an annual award at the Under-12 County Tournament in memory of Gill who sadly passed away in September 2018.

Gill will be remembered by many players, seniors and juniors, coaches and umpires, in the

Nottinghamshire Netball League and as a representative of the county netball team for her outstanding performance as goal shooter from the age of 10 to 72 years old.

She was probably the best goal shooter never to have played for England.

Her shooting statistics for most of her career were near to 90% in every game she played.

There cannot be many players across England who have played for over 40 years in national competitions.

Starting out as a member of Canley Ladies team, she spent the majority of her playing years at Boots Beeston (later renamed Gauntlettes) before finishing her netball career at Cliftonettes as a coach to junior players.

Gill was an inspiration to players of all ages and experience, passing on her love and passion for netball - volunteering as a coach of the junior players at Cliftonettes for over 25 years with many going onto play in county, regional and national competitions.

A great legacy for a great lady!
