10 minute group presentation on given business communication scenario = 50%

Details on marking scheme and criteria later Written group paper on your strategy for the

presentation – using the Business Communications strategies and tools you have learned = 50%

Requirements

ALL students must help to prepare and speak during the presentation

ALL students must help to write the group paper You will be asked questions at the end of your presentation

which will count towards your individual mark You will give peer feedback on your group members

performance during the task preparation. Your score will count towards your individual mark

You will actively listen to other's presentations, and vote for which group you think is the best

NOTE: You cannot vote for your own group!

Presentation Details

Presentations will be scheduled for Thursday 29th and Friday 30th November (Week 3)

Groups 1-11 on Day 1, Groups 12-22 on Day 2 10 minutes presentation time per group 5 minutes for questions after You may use: PowerPoint, Word, blackboard, handouts / leaflets (ask the

teacher if you have more requirements) There will be practice time in tutorials to present to a smaller audience and get

feedback If you fail to participate in group preparation or fail to show up for the

presentation, you will receive 0% for this part of the module Any genuine sickness or other reasons for non-attendance must be reported to

the office and the teacher

You are a group of 2nd year University students Your University have just announced a scholarship programme

for work experience in the USA They will fund ONE GROUP of students to undertake this

opportunity You will compete with other groups to 'win' the scholarships for

your group You will present to the University Board of Academics to pitch

for the scholarships for your group You will also hand in a written group paper outlining your

Scenario Details

The J-1 Visa Programme to allow foreign students to undertake work experience in the USA is real!

Therefore, you can research the programme on the internet to get real and up to date information

There are many companies involved in the J-1 Programme.

The suggested company to use for your presentation is Disney – but if you want to change this, it's fine to choose another company from the Programme

Who are your team members – use their personality styles to your best advantage!

Examples: Activists may be natural project leaders Theorists may be natural leads for the research Pragmatists may insist on scheduling more practice

20% content 20% materials / media 20% image and credibility 15% performance 10% peer evaluation 10% bonus for the 'winning' group 5% VIVA questions

Presentation Mark Scheme

20% content – evidence of research and referencing, quality of information, strength of arguments

20% materials / media – quality of written materials (spelling, editing etc), use of appropriate media for target audience

20% image and credibility – your appearance, professionalism, believability as a group 15% performance – speaking tone and clarity, pronunciation, confidence, body

language, group timings 10% peer evaluation – you will submit individual peer evaluation forms, sharing points

between your team members, based on their group work contributions to the presentation and written assignment (not yourselves!)

10% bonus for the 'winning' group - you will vote for your winning group (not yourselves!!)

5% VIVA questions – questions will be asked by the audience at the end of your presentation

TOTAL = 100%, worth 50% of the module mark

Group Written Paper Mark Scheme

One paper to be submitted per group Outlining your Business Communication Objectives and Strategy for your presentation Maximum: 2 x pages of A4 (12 point font size). Images and appendices can be included

if required. Format: Introduction, main body of report, summary. 50% content – evidence of research and referencing, demonstration of understanding of

Business Communication Objectives and Strategies, quality of information, strength of arguments, evidence of understanding of groupwork dynamics/ personality styles

50% quality of written materials – use of appropriate Business Communication terms, formal language, evidence of spellcheck, editing, proofreading, structure of paper, logical format

TOTAL = 100%, worth 50% of the module mark
