BUSH DANCE SUCCESS Well, no storm stopped the bush dance this year. After all the work that
had gone into preparing for the dance last year, which was abandoned
because of storm warnings, this year’s dance was a huge success. We tried
a new format too with an afternoon dance for the little ones and the ‘real
thing’ in the evening. While Classes one, two and three were ‘heel and
toe-ing’ on the grass practising for their dance, we heard that the Prep
children were sneaking up to the fence and watching through the bushes.
Then they would go into their playground and copy what they had seen.
The afternoon dance in the hall had a band made up from staff, and
students from the High School, Jane was the caller for the dances. She has been speaking in sign
language to her class ever since (until she gets her voice back).
In the evening, Chris Jack returned
to our school to call for the dances.
The band inc;uded Isabella, Maisie,
Santiago, Nishka and Calum (High
School students), Chris (guitar),
Laura Thomson (violin), Dale Jones,
John Davidson (bass), David Gilbert
(drums). The hall was opened up,
with the stage at the sliding doors
and the view extended from the
stage right up the hillside to the
Hub. Some people sat on the grass,
most danced. There was food and
drink available in the Hub and
coffee from a stall.
Term 3 Week 8 8 September 2017 | Samford Valley Steiner School | 07 3430 9600

Thank you to the organisers, to Chris Wood-Willems for the poster, to
Michael, David, Kim and Femke from PAFA for their constant work, to
Michael Ryan and the School Board members for all their cooking, and to
the members of the band for being able to play so fast. Also a thank you
to everyone that came. A most enjoyable night.
PS Just as a footnote PAFA this year has a small, dynamic and
hardworking committee. The people in this small group have put in a lot
of effort to establish a social focus for the school. They organised the 80’s
Disco, the working bees and now the Bush Dance. The chair of the group
was delighted at the Bush Dance when a new member of the community
came up to him and said “Look I love what you are doing. We have only
just moved to the area, but I would love to join in and help with the
things you are doing.” Contact point is Samford Valley Steiner School
Parents and Friends Association [email protected]. Send them an
email. They can’t keep doing this on their own.

CLASS 5 ANCIENT EGYPT MAIN LESSON (This article is a compilation from the students own words about the lesson)
Simon Humphries took this amazing main lesson about the ancient Egyptians and how they lived an
extraordinary life. Every year the Nile river floods and the water turns black. We used the watercourse
and a wheelbarrow full of muddy water to recreate the Nile flooding houses and temples that we built.
We learned about the three seasons, Akhet, Peret and Shemu, and the blue-skinned god of the Nile
named Hapi.
Simon took us outside to do some geometry and measurement with ropes using
our digits, palms, cubits and chalk. We also painted a sarcophagus (an Egyptian
coffin). It actually looked like the real thing! Some people got to lay down in it.
We learnt that the word ‘mummy’ comes from an ancient word ‘mum’
for the tar or pitch that the mummified bodies were painted with. We
even mummified an apple! We did this by peeling the apple, coring it,
carving a face into it, putting it into a container and covering it with
natron (salt mixed with bicarb soda). We checked them after 9 days and
14 days…and they stank! We also weighed and measured them. Most
people’s apple heads had shrunk by 50% to 70%.
We enjoyed learning about how the ancient Egyptians mummified a
person; especially how they stuck a long hook up the person’s nose and
swivelled it around to drain out the brain. Even the lungs, stomach, liver
and intestines were preserved in canopic jars.

Our class learned about Egyptian gods and goddesses (Anubis was very popular with the boys in class).
Simon told us the story of Isis, Osiris, Set and Horus. We learned about the magical eye of Horus. It was
even used to do fractions for Maths!
We found out what happened to Egyptian’s souls after they died. Their heart and deeds were weighed
on the scales of truth. If the soul was of a good person then Osiris would let them live forever in the
stars. If the scales didn’t balance then the soul would be dragged away and eaten by the devourer of
the dead, Ammut (part crocodile-hippo-lion).
We learnt about King Tutankhamun and how his death mask was actually made
for Queen Nefertiti. Pharaohs were thought to be like gods and super heroes. We
discovered how pyramids developed.
The Egyptian priests worshipped the god Amun who lived in a small statue made of solid gold. In the
mornings, they had to wake him up, wash and dress the statue, apply makeup, perfume and jewellery.
They even gave it food and drink. But the priests became so greedy for power and money that they paid
people to rob treasures from the pharaoh’s tombs.
We experimented with an Egyptian creation story using ourselves and props as shadow puppets. We
made Isaac look like the god Horus with a hawk’s head.
We drew pyramids using a compass and ruler. We compared the size of the Great Pyramid with famous
buildings and even Camp Mountain. We discovered some amazing secrets hidden in the design of the
Great Pyramid.
We had a great time learning about ancient Egyptians. It was full of wonder,
magic and mystery. Overall, this main lesson wasn’t good… IT WAS THE BEST!

BUSH DANCE
To EVERYONE who helped with the Bush Dance, PAFA would like to say a HUGE Thank You!
That was a lot of fun and it was SO GOOD to see Parents and Children all joining in the Dances.
And as they dance, men turn them around,
Lads all dressed up for a night on the town,
In their waistcoats and moleskins, It’s a smile and a bow,
To the lasses who danced ‘till the morning.
Special Thank you to;
John Davidson, for ALL his help and the concept of a separate dance for Class 1-3.
Jane Blomkamp (with Carly and Stefi) for teaching dances to Class 1 – 3.
What a great service to our kids and what a difference this made.
Michael Ryan and team from the School Board for doing the BBQ at the dance. Super!
Parents who contributed baking items for sale at the dance. Yum!
Chris Jack and the Band - awesome
And to our valued School Admin for support with promotions and general “Stuff.” Blessings
Final thanks to you the school community for coming out and sharing in the “spirit of dance”
Hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.
And when they dance, their dresses spin round,
They travel so light that they ne’er touch the ground,
And the smile on their faces will win every crowd,
The lasses who danced ‘till the morning.
Thank YOU!
The PAFA Team!

A recent seminar on Jung and Steiner and their
contributions to an evolution of consciousness
was held at the C. G. Jung Institute in San
Francisco to discuss the common ground of
these two men’s great works. “Although
contemporaries, Carl Jung and Rudolf Steiner
never met though they shared a common
philosophical ancestor, Wolfgang von Goethe
who presents an alternative approach to the
natural world and the psyche. Goethe’s work
reflects an approach that perceives the whole
as a living substance, whether that be the
human psyche or the flower growing along the
roadside. Both Jung and Steiner developed their
approaches based on this communication with
the living substance, for Jung, it was with the
unconscious, and for Steiner, with the living
Spirit.”
Both acknowledge the place of myth in the
foundations of psychic life.
Creative arts therapy: Sessions & Courses for
Adults and Children
Creative arts therapy creates a space, where a
difficult challenge or condition in the soul can
be brought and explored in a gentle way. Using
a range of artistic activities and arts practises,
sand play, painting, drawing and form drawing,
clay modelling, writing and conversation, an
unravelling begins. This may happen over a
series of sessions with both guided and more
open activities. Art making generates inner
warmth and nourishment, helping to restore
balance where astrality presses too deeply on
the soul. Reflective opportunities help to assist
understanding, ultimately strengthening one’s
resolve to move forward by oneself.
This therapy is also most suitable for children.
With the assistance and involvement of the
parent/parents a series of sessions is structured
to meet the child’s needs. Drawing upon Rudolf
Steiner’s fourfold view of the human being a
way is sought to support and lighten the
unfolding challenges that have become a
hindrance for the child. A therapeutic story or
artistic reflection is offered to the child as a
completion of the series of sessions.
