There is no doubt that Orlando has become the nation’s premier sports destination, and the addition of the new Orlando City Soccer Club stadium only adds to our offerings. In the last year, our region has hosted Copa America, Florida State-Ole Miss in the Camping World Kickoff, the Florida Classic, the ACC Football Championship, three bowl games, the NFL Pro Bowl, and more. Next month, NCAA March Madness returns to the Amway Center and in April, we’ll host WWE WrestleMania for the second time at Camping World Stadium. Sports are an economic engine for our community. Events bring more visitors to our region, guests to our hotels, and customers to our restaurants. But venues like this stadium are permanent economic drivers. In February, Mayor Dyer, District 5 City Commissioner Regina I. Hill, and others cut the ribbon for the newest MLS stadium in the nation. This stadium will provide an intimate atmosphere for our community to come together as one, for Parramore businesses to be represented during future farmers markets planned at the stadium, and the exposure businesses will receive as thousands of fans march to the stadium on game day. The City looks forward to the positive benefits this stadium will bring to the community. Parramore Business Openings and Updates

The City of Orlando is working to expand access to computer coding classes through its community centers. Classes are now offered at the Northwest Community Center as well as the John H. Jackson Community Center. Teaching children to code helps them channel their natural interest in games, social media, and technology into potential careers in the technology field. Students learn how to design and program original games using real world skills turning them from consumers of digital media into creators and producers. Hands-on lessons help students learn about:• Algorithms, loops, functions, variables,

conditionals• Abstraction, decomposition, pattern

recognition• Data• Computing practice and programming• Computers and communication devices• Community, global, and ethical impacts

While somewhat reluctant to take part in the program, students now find themselves excited to come to class. That enthusiasm comes from the passion of their teachers. Dr. Tonjia DeLavallade runs a full-service information technology firm. Kyle Steele is the Founder of multiple tech companies, including Learn Jelly, Inc. which helps students learn academic concepts and improve

From February 2017 to fall 2017, construction will be taking place on the Livingston Street extension, which will connect new Terry Ave. to Parramore Ave. This new roadway will provide a vital connection to serve the new OCPS Academic Center for Excellence, which is expected to open this fall. This construction project may impact you in the following ways: • A small portion of the Tennis Center

parking area will be blocked by construction. Tennis Center patrons are asked to please park in the Orange Lot 1 (adjacent to the new Terry Ave.).

• The Downtown Recreation Complex racquetball courts will be demolished. Please visitcityoforlando.net/fpr to find alternate racquetball amenities.

• The Pottery Studio’s storage shed will be relocated and replaced with a new facility on the west side of the Recreation Complex.

We apologize for any inconvenience these impacts may cause. We appreciate your patience as we prepare to open a new roadway to serve your new school. During construction, the Recreation Complex will remain open with normal business hours as well as maintain the current schedule of events for youth activities and exercise programs.

The City of Orlando is committed and focused on revitalizing the historic Parramore neighborhood. On Thursday, March 2, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, District 5 City Commissioner Regina I. Hill, and members from the Orlando Neighborhood Improvement District gathered for the Richard Allen Gardens ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the recently rehabilitated apartment complex. The City of Orlando and ANVIL-Richard Allen Gardens, Inc., a Florida non-profit corporation, partnered together to rehabilitate all 30 units including the conversion of two ground floor apartments into one bedroom and one bath handicapped accessible units.

reading and critical thinking skills through the combined power of art, coding, and stories. Dr. LaVallade established E-CODE (Empowerment through Computing Opportunities, Diversity, and Education) to address digital inequality through educational opportunities for underserved minorities, women, and girls. Excitement has spread, with children talking to each other about their accomplishments. Demand has overwhelmed capacity at the two centers offering coding classes. The City of Orlando is now looking to increase the number of students able to participate by adding teachers. For more information about the E-CODE program in the City of Orlando’s Recreation Centers, or if you would like to volunteer, please contact Taryn Rutkovitz, Recreation Division Manager, at 407.246.4300 or [email protected].
