• Brief Introduction to E-commerce• Companies, individuals, and institutions use the

Internet in many ways. Companies use the Internet for electronic commerce, including advertising, selling, buying, distributing products, and providing customer service. In addition, companies use the Internet for business-to-business transactions, such as exchanging financial information and accessing complex databases. Businesses and institutions use the Internet for voice and video conferencing and other forms of communication that enable people to telecommute (work away from the office using a computer).

• What is E-commerce?• Electronic Commerce, briefly E-commerce or EC, is the

practice of buying and selling products and services over the Internet, utilizing technologies such as the Web, electronic data interchange, email, electronic fund transfers, and smart cards. • What is a Search Engine?• A search engine is a searchable online database of internet

resources. It has several components: search engine software, spider software, an index (database), and a relevancy algorithm (rules for ranking). It searches documents for specified keywords and returns a list of the documents where the keywords were found. Although search engine is really a general class of programs, the term is often used to specifically describe systems like Alta Vista and Excite that enable users to search for documents on the World Wide Web.

• Typical famous search engine websites are google.com and baidu.com (for Chinese users ). Following are some knowledge of Google search engine:

Task 3 Learn some knowledge about domain name and website.

• What is a domain name? • A domain name is an alias for an IP address.

Now what is an IP address? An IP address is a numeric code that signifies where to look through the Internet for content. An example of an IP address would be 22.226.141.25. Rather than typing in a long and easily forgotten IP address, a domain name helps you by typing an easily remembered name to access the same site.
