The possibilities are limitlesswhen a family unites in business.

We are here to change that statistic, one family at a time.

The practical and powerful Road Map program—backed by the reputation of the Sauder

School of Business at UBC, and delivered by some of the leading experts in the field of family

enterprise—provides a unique, safe and exciting opportunity for growth, discovery and

affirmation of your family business and its future. The program addresses the shortfall in

business-family planning and protects your family from the dismal succession statistics.

What is the Road Map program?

The Road Map Program is a series of educational seminars designed with the goal of establishing

a plan and charting a course of action which will enable business families to remain healthy and

successful over multiple generations. Now in its ninth year, this successful program is offered

by the Business Families Centre at UBC’s Sauder School of Business.

Who should attend?

Aimed at families in all areas of business—from agriculture to construction, manufacturing natural

resources to industrial supplies, and retail to portfolio businesses—Road Map provides practical

tools and techniques to help families plan for transition.

All family members (whether active in the business or not), shareholders and non-family

executives are welcome in the program.

Family Businesses form the backbone of the Canadian economy contributing

over 60% of the GDP. However, the fundamental principles applied to most

businesses simply do not address the unique challenges faced by business

families—family dynamics, succession planning, as well as family governance

and communication. This is one of the major reasons why only 30% of

family businesses survive into the second generation.

“We benefited immeasurably from the Road Map program.

As a family we were able to identify key decisions that had

to be made over the next 12 to 36 months, that will help

us achieve a clear succession plan, and help each family

member understand their own role in the process.

Two thumbs up. . .or in our case, ‘ten’ thumbs up!”

“It was a health scare that prompted our family to take Road Map, where we realized it’s

never too early to plan for the future. Initially three of us enrolled and very shortly there-

after we decided it was important for the entire family to participate. Part 1 helped us

establish the Family Council, and Part 2 gave us the framework to develop the structures

that will govern it. By realizing the importance of individual values, we articulated the

values of our business family as a whole, translating into our family vision. Succession is

important to our business family and Road Map has been essential as we transition to

the next generation of leadership.”
