Foundation Educates Youth on Economic DevelopmentThe Youth Leadership Wake Forest program,
funded and facilitated by the Wake Forest Chamber Foundation for Common Progress with financial support from Concord Hospitality Enterprises Company, held their Economic Development Day on January 25. The group of 30 students toured two area businesses— K-Flex USA in Younsgville and Ultra Electronics-3 Phoenix in Wake Forest.
Focus Design Builders LLC was the Economic Development Day sponsor and gave an overview of the K-Flex USA expansion. K-Flex is nearly doubling the size of their current manufacturing operation and will be creating 100 new jobs. During their visit to Ultra Electronics-3 Phoenix, students learned about many of the technology solutions the company is developing for the United States Department of Defense.
The Wake Forest Chamber Foundation for Common Progress funds the Youth Leadership Wake Forest program, along with its adult leadership counterpart. Applications are now available for Youth Leadership Wake Forest for the 2017-2018 school year. NEW PROGRAM! Issues & Answers The Wake Forest Area Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce a new program beginning this month! Issues & Answers will be an opportunity to hear from industry experts on how the changing landscape of law, finance, taxes, and insurance is affecting business today. Panelists will share an update from their field of expertise and take questions. Participants can interact in both in the large group setting or individually following the presentations. This program is free of charge for all Chamber members and their guests. During our inaugural event on February 28, these topics will be discussed:
Law: An overview of laws to watch in 2017, including HB2, the Department of Labor’s Overtime Rule, the Affordable Care Act, and other workplace legal issues related to sexual orientation and transgender status.
Finance: An overview of what’s going on in the capital markets this quarter.
Taxes: New NC laws regarding sales tax on repairs, maintenance and installation services and corporate taxes, as well as any new developments in with regards to changes to federal income taxes.
Insurance: Cyber Liability exposure affecting companies big and small.
Our panel of experts consists of Rob Mitchell, CPA, CVA, a partner and the firm manager at Mitchell & Nemitz, PA; Leslie Lasher, a business and litigation attorney focusing in employment law and compliance with Forrest Firm, PC; Seth Asbill, a financial advisor with Edwards Jones; and Laura Jazab with Hartsfield & Nash Insurance Agency.

A new workforce development initiative is being launched this spring. Wake Forest Internships is a joint initiative of the Wake Forest Area Chamber of Commerce and the Wake Forest Chamber Foundation for Common Progress. Its goal is to connect local businesses with high school and college students interested in gaining workplace experience. Businesses that currently offer internships or are interested in providing experience to students may submit an internship and be listed on the site. The Foundation also continues its cornerstone initiatives—Leadership Wake Forest and Youth Leadership Wake Forest. These programs fulfill the mission of the educational foundation by providing leadership training to adults and high school students. See page 1 for an update on Youth Leadership. Leadership Wake Forest participants recently learned about town government and economic development. Participants became commissioners for the day and presented, amended, and approved a budget for a simulated town. They also toured Superior Tooling and Moffat Pipe and learned about how these companies help spur economic development in the area.

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) receives many questions concerning access to capital and SBA loan programs. The SBA has launched a new online matchmaking tool called LINC (www.sba.gov/tools/linc). LINC is a free and self-guided platform for small business owners looking to connect with SBA lenders throughout the country. Since February 2015, LINC has connected more than 50,000 small business owners with lenders. Over the last three years, Wake Forest small business owners received 41 SBA loans for $24.9 million. Eighteen of these SBA loans went to start-ups and 23 went to existing small businesses. These loan numbers reflect the Agency’s and lender’s use of modern tools to streamline and simplify SBA loan processes and policies to cut processing times to seven days for working capital loans under $350,000 and 20 days for higher-dollar loans. The Wake Forest Chamber Foundation for Common Progress, with support from Huntington Learning Center, has launched a “Teacher of the Month” award program. Each month, an area teacher who has been selected by his or her school’s principle for outstanding performance will be recognized. On January 18, Cindy Skoll, a second grade teacher at Wake Forest Charter Academy, was named the first “Teacher of the Month.” She received a plaque, flowers, and gift cards from Huntington Learning Center of Wake Forest owner Shawn Livingston.
“We are so pleased to sponsor this program,” said Shawn. “Working with children every day is so rewarding, and can also be challenging. It’s exciting to help recognize some of the outstanding teachers in the area.” Corey Hutcherson is the VP for Community Relations at the Wake Forest Chamber of Commerce. “A mission of the Chamber Foundation is to support education initiatives. This program is a small step, but an important one. We’re grateful for Huntington Learning Center’s partnership and I congratulate Ms. Skoll.”
Chamber Foundation Launches Teacher of the Month
Chamber Connections Creates Opportunities Wake Forest Chamber Connections is a monthly program where members come together to learn how to do business better and build their referral network. The program is open to all Chamber members and is provided free of charge. Each meeting includes an educational component, roundtable discussion, and the opportunity to network and build referrals. During the first quarter of 2017, Chamber Connections is focusing on sales and marketing. At the January meeting, facilitator Jessie Pendergrass with Frigi-Temp, shared a simple marketing and strategy plan which is widely applicable across many fields and industries. The structure of the plan involves four main pillars—essential, content, engagement, and conversion/retention—and helps a company to organize, strategize, and implement a entire marketing plan, and discover new opportunities.
At the next Wake Forest Chamber Connections meeting on February 13, the group will be looking into the fundamentals of the sales process beginning with the simple question, “What do you say to a potential customer?” You’ll learn how asking this question can affect your sales team and impacted your approach to customer service. Congratulations to Karen Walker for being named the Ambassador of the Month for January! As a Wake Forest Chamber member, and Ambassador, Karen continues to enjoy being a part of a business family that is dedicated and passionate! Karen is the owner of Knotable Occasions LLC, a distinctive gift baskets and things company. The company specializes in custom baskets that create a “wow” factor for the recipient, such as ones that include gourmet food like artisan chocolates, popcorns, and many other gift items for personal and corporate giving. After nine years of creating custom gift baskets, she continues to find joy in giving a gift as unique as the recipient who is receiving it. Karen has extended her gifting brand, and partnered with VIA ONE HOPE, an event planning and cause centric wine company. From the Mondavi’s Napa Valley estates, VIA ONE HOPE’s goal is to give back to non-profits; locally, nationally, and worldwide. Karen has been a wonderful ambassador for the Chamber. “If you want a partner that cares just as much about your business success as you do, and will support your individual, and community growth, then there is no need to look any further than the Wake Forest Chamber!” she says. Karen was born in England and grew up in Jamaica. She is the director for home-based and transitional care service programs at the VA (Veteran Administration), and holds degrees in social
work, law and a doctorate in industrial and organizational psychology. Karen is married to Bobby, a veteran and business owner of MJK Treasures; a company that repairs, refinishes, restores, and custom buils of furniture in downtown Wake Forest. She has three wonderful children. When
Karen is not involved in her many roles, she loves to volunteer and
work with non-profit agencies, travel, read, create gift baskets, and plan wine events for all business and personal occasions.

Programs for Women, Young Professionals The Women Business Owners Alliance (wBOA) is a program for female professionals who are members of the Wake Forest Area Chamber of Commerce. The group meets monthly (Jan.-Nov.) and provides both educational programming and socials. In January, Mary Tomlinson with On-Purpose Partners was the featured speaker at wBOA’s “Ask the Expert.” The topic was working with a business coach. Mary shared information on how to find a coach who is the right fit, including specific questions to ask a coach before engaging them. She said that learning the coach’s own experience relevant to the attendee’s needs is vital. She added to get the coach’s credentials and process, as well as asking the coach for a reference who could speak to the coach’s methods and overall experience. Mary added that in order to have a rewarding coaching experience, the attendee—not the coach—should set the goals. The coach should simply define the process to get to the goal.
The Wake Forest Young Professionals group will be spreading the love to some seniors on Valentine’s Day. All Chamber members ages 23-45 are invited to attend. The group will meet on Feb. 14 at The Lodge at Wake Forest to brighten the day of some of our local seniors. This event is replacing the group’s usual monthly networking luncheon and will be a great way to reach out to our senior community. The Lodge at Wake Forest is providing a complimentary lunch for all attendees. Following lunch, the group will get together with some of the seniors who live there to play games and enjoy other fun activities. We are always looking to grow our Young Professionals group, so bring a friend! Wake Forest Young Professionals is free for Wake Forest Chamber members.
