WEGMANS

Every Day You Get Our Bestby Bobbi Jo Hooker-Haley

Did you know that the Hornell Wegmans was the first Wegmans store opened in the Southern Tier? It was in 1965 and its location was in the old K-Mart plaza. The current Wegmans, located at 1000 State Route 36, was opened in 1995 and continues to provide Hornell and the surrounding area with quality goods, an abundance of choice, beautiful store and displays and a nearly telepathic level of customer service.

Hornell native Ron Lockwood started out working part time at the Hornell Wegmans in high school. “In 1969 I decided to take a course at Alfred State College...a fellow employee was taking a Food Marketing course and it sounded very

interesting,” recalls Ron. “I pursued it and enjoyed the course.” He then transferred to Cornell University continuing in the Food Marketing program. “I then worked at 10 different Wegmans locations in the Rochester area before being named the Hornell store manager in 1979,” he said. Ron is proud to be living in the Hornell area and managing such a great store. “This is a great area to work in, live in and to raise a family,” said Ron. “The amount of pride the Hornell residents have for their community is seen through their commitment to making Hornell a better place.”

Wegmans has raised the bar on the shopping experience in all areas -- and is not your average supermarket. They offer more

customer convenience services and “stores within a store” than possibly any other supermarket chain. Wegmans carries more than 60,000 products on its shelves and stores run from 80,000 to 130,000 square feet in size. Wegmans has a dazzling display of fresh produce, artisan breads and other baked goods hot from the oven several times a day, displays of freshly-caught seafood, meat, deli products and imported cheeses, international foods -- plus all the foods and household items usually found in supermarkets.

Keeping abreast of new technology, Wegmans has developed a website that helps customers save time and money,

e n a b l i n g them to feed their f a m i l i e s w e l l . Shoppe r s

can browse weekly specials, build a shopping list that’s organized by store layout, and search through a library of recipes. Wegmans was also one of the first supermarkets to introduce electronic discounts in 1990 and bar-code scanning -- way back in 1974!

Wegmans has 76 stores located throughout New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland and Virginia employs over 40,000 people. Fortunemagazine named Wegmans to its “100 Best Companies to Work for in America” list for the past 13 years and most recently ranked 3rd of the Top 100!

Wegmans has a strong devotion to its employees. Wegmans is proud to offer strong employee benefit programs, as well as a chain-wide scholarship employee program and a w a r d - w i n n i n g mentoring program to help at-risk urban youths complete high school and gain work skills. Since the inauguration of the scholarship program in 1984 Wegmans has awarded nearly 77 million dollars in scholarships to more than 24,000 employees. Wegmans also has a major commitment to the community. Charitable donations are made to programs that help to reduce hunger, help young people succeed, and strengthen neighborhoods.

When you shop at Wegmans, it’s not only that your pantry is stocked -- you know that, through Wegmans, you have given back to your community.

“We consider [Wegmans] the best

chain in the country, maybe in

the world.” --Neil Stern,

industry analyst

POINTS OF PRIDEWegmans receives around 3,100 requests every year from 47 states, District of Columbia, Guam, and individuals asking the company to open a store in their community. Another 8,400 customers each year send letters saying how much they like shopping at Wegmans, because they find what they want, or appreciate the way Wegmans employees treat them.

The company has won dozens of awards and distinctions for making the shopping experience better, and for treating customers, employees, and communities in an exemplary manner.

An amazing asset to the Hornell community, Maple City Savings offers a variety of services to their clients. Dealing mostly in lending, Maple City Savings also offers everything from ATMs, Real Time Online Internet Banking, Secure Bill Pay, Health Savings Accounts, and Commercial Checking.

Some of the many other services are Notary Service, CDʼs, IRAʼs, Home Equity and Lines of Equity. Even with all of these great services, the main thing that sets Maple City Savings apart from their local competitors is their featured Mortgage and Construction Loans. When it comes to Construction Loans, they are the area experts. A lot of banks donʼt offer such loans because of the risk. “Weʼve had a great amount of success,” says Mr. Terry L. Bertram, President, referring to Construction Loans for people who want to do it themselves, whether itʼs remodeling, building from the ground up or hiring out contractors.

Bertram also notes, “We are a true community bank.” The dollars that come into Maple City Savings stay in the local area rather than to an outside home office removed from the community.

They also are continuing their Affordable Housing Projects with the Federal Home Loan Bank of New York. These projects are a conduit between non-profits and the Federal Home Loan Bank. Community efforts such as these have helped a lot of people in and around Steuben County. Maple City Savings Bank also contributes to several other worthy causes throughout our area: United Way, Sports Night, and Relay for Life, just to name a few. Like so many throughout our community, employees of Maple City Savings Bank have been very instrumental over the past years in fundraising for the community. “Itʼs not just the money that you pour into the community, itʼs also the time and talent of your employees.”

They have a large inventory of auto tires, farm tires, fluids, oils, anti-freeze and auto parts, which saves the customer from spending time waiting for parts to arrive before repairs can begin. Wow!  73 years!  Beaver’s Pharmacy in Canisteo originated in 1937 when Edward & Evelyn Beaver bought the business at its present location from E.C. Baker’s widow.

Beaver’s Pharmacy has dedicated their efforts to strengthen their core business - the pharmacy department -  to keep up with technology and to provide the service their customers have

come to expect. Manager Tim

Steffey states “ you need to check out our ever-expanding gift section. The gift section includes Canisteo Collectibles, novelty signs, DWK figurines, Willow Tree Figurines by Susan Lordi and our Designer Greetings gift card line.”

Today, owner Andy Allen runs one of the few remaining independent

pharmacies left in the area. What stands out most at Beaver’s?  Andy says “Our customer service is what differentiates us from other pharmacies. We have a friendly and knowledgeable staff that is always happy to help our customers.”  Tim Steffey adds “we have

a great team and we aim to be as friendly as possible.  This is a small town, and your

best bet in business is to be friendly.”

Hi, I’m Dr. Susan Cosgrove, and if you’ve got any kind of back, hip or leg pain, your worries may be over in just a few minutes. Why? Because I’m the director of HealthSource Chiropractic™ of Hornell clinic, and I’ve discovered

what may be the best healing secrets for “bad backs” – EVER!

I’d bestupid to make such a claim if I

couldn’t back it up. But I’m so confident we can help your back, I insist on giving you a 100%, TRIPLE SATISFACTION PLEDGE at our HealthSource Chiropractic™ clinics. I hate empty promises, and I also hate the lies most folks have been told about their backs. That’s why it’s important I expose these MYTHS about back pain:

MYTH #1: Sciatica (pain downyour leg) is always caused by aherniated disc!

No way... even though most doctors will sell you a $3,000 MRI at the first sign of leg pain. But they don’t tell you about a 5-inch muscle in the hip that can squeeze the sciatic nerve. And it feels EXACTLY like you’ve got the worst slipped disc on earth. It’s a major discovery and...

The good news is that it can be easy and inexpensive to correct! How? Just keep reading! But first, here’s a picture to show you where the pain comes from:

MYTH #2: Stiffness from

Arthritis means you’re getting old... and it must be the reason for all your pain and stiffness!

Not true, because thousands of folks with arthritis in their backs have absolutely NO PAIN! Then why do YOU feel like your back will snap if you bend forward or twist too fast? Because the truth is:

Your stiffness may be caused by a hidden, even more dangerous problem than arthritis, and it can lead to a hip replacement! You see, most folks believe that something mysterious (like maybe an “arthritis fairy”?) waved a wand over them, and they’re cursed... doomed to suffer forever.

But did you know that many arthritis problems are CAUSED by a combination of unseen imbalances in the spine and surrounding muscles? It’s the most common cause of hip replacements but not that hard to correct if we catch it in time. It’s like the tires on your car...

If the alignment is off just a teeny-weeny bit, at first you don’t notice, but over a few thousand miles you start to see signs of wear... that is, if you’re lucky enough to catch it before a flat on the freeway ruins your day. In your spine, you’re lucky if you catch untreated imbalances before they ruin your spine! How to fix them? Just look at Myth #3.

MYTH #3: Your Back is “Out!”

Sure, that’s exactly how it feels. But guess what, we found that’s usually not the case. It sounds good, but we now know better.

You see, there are 7 different reasons for that

painful, locked-up and stuck feeling that causes so much misery:

• low-grade spasm• pelvis torque and tension• imbalance of hips• fallen or dropped arches• stiff vertebra joint• adhesions in leg muscle• pinched nerve

It’s NOT just your spine, and it’s NOT just your muscles. As a matter of fact, if one of the major muscles that stabilize the spine is partly spasmed, a “2nd stringer” will have to carry the load. But this is a serious problem...

It’s like having your plumber doing all the dangerous electrical work!

Sure, he may get it done, and it may work at first, but how long until there’s a fire? Or your back locks up? Which leads me to our next myth:

MYTH #4: “It’s Only a Muscle!”

Boy, it’s scary how many people think muscle problems are no big deal. Unfortunately, tight, bound-up, and spasmed or tight muscles can wear out joints faster than you can say, “Charley Horse!”

That’s why it’s important to examine the spine AT THE SAME TIME as the muscles that control it. It’s also why we’ve had such outrageous success with even the worst backs at HealthSource Chiropractic. Because we deal with BOTH the spine and muscles at the same time. We have spine doctors (chiropractors) and muscle professionals (therapists) and together they deliver

an outstanding way to help “bad backs.” This ties in to Myth #5:

MYTH #5: “Muscle Relaxants” will help your muscles heal! Good grief, NO!

Your muscles tighten up for a reason, and muscle relaxants are like turning back the clock on a time-bomb... you know it’s still going to blow up! Sure, you may feel better now, but you’ll pay later... and pay “in spades”!So don’t fall for these lies about your low back. They’ll keep you hurting, frustrated and exhausted – forever!

SOUTHERN TIER CONCRETE

by Bobbi Jo Hooker-HaleyDid you know that the quality of the sand and

gravel in the town of Alfred is the best in the area? That was the strategy behind the location of Southern Tier Concrete.

Working in the concrete business has been in the Palmer family blood since Ben Harvey Palmer was involved in concrete pipe business in the early 1940s.

In October of 1946, Ben Harvey Palmer and Ben Palmer Jr. realized that the quality of the sand and gravel in Alfred was perfect for manufacturing concrete masonry products, and that is exactly what the Palmers have been doing for over 64 years.

Ben Palmer the 3rd, president of the corporation, has well over 40 years of experience in the industry. Ben, who worked at the factory during his high school years, joined the corporation full time after graduating from college. He is highly involved in the manufacturing of the products. “He actually oversees all production to make sure that the quality of the product is the best it can be,” commented Chuck Jessup who has been the business manager of Southern Tier Concrete for more than 30 years.

Southern Tier Concrete employs 15 hardworking individuals: Mary Stearns, who has been key to the daily operations of the business for over 20 years and Irving Wakefield, who began working at Southren Tier Concrete in 1956 (He retired about eight years ago, but returns during the summer months to help out.).

The employees at Southern Tier Concrete are not only committed to their jobs, but they are also committed to the community. Southern Tier Concrete donates to many local organizations, including the Alfred Lions Club, Hornell Kiwanis Club, and the Alfred Station Fire Department. Ben is a former Scio Town Justice. Chuck Jessup is a former Alfred Town Councilman, Town Supervisor, and is now Chairman of the Allegany County IDA,

and is also a life member of the Hornell Kiwanis Club. Mary Stearns has been involved in many local organizations, and has a long-term association with the Cub Scouts and the Boy Scouts. She is a highly respected District Leader.

Southern Tier Concrete may not be New York’s largest manufacturer of concrete masonry products,

but “we are the premiere manufacturer,” commented Jessup.

For the past 64 years Southern Tier Concrete has seen a steady growth, and

plans to continue growing in the years to come. “We are committed to providing our customers with the best and safest product possible,” said Jessup. “We are a manufacturing business with the ability to provide large construction firms with material needed for multi-million dollar jobs, but we also have the ability to serve the public and its needs.”
