Leadership Craven - Education Session

The 2014-2015 Leadership Craven class participated in the year’s first student-led session on October 9th. Ryan Lansche and Andy Shorter were chosen to plan the day’s activities, which would focus on aspects of the education system within Craven County. The plan was to visit facilities within Craven County mirroring student advancement through the grade levels from elementary to junior college. They started their day at J.T. Barber Elementary and ended at the Craven Community College campus in Havelock. The Principal at J.T. Barber, Mrs. Kathy Barber (no connection), met the group and escorted them into the media center where she introduced several other visitors from the School Board including Dr. Mills the Superintendent, and Mr. Ipock the Board Chairman. It was interesting to note that Mr. Ipock found, and proudly wore, his Leadership Craven nametag from when he was one of the members of the inaugural class in 1992. Mrs. Barber gave an impressive information brief about the school’s history and their most recent achievements before the group broke up into smaller sections to visit several classes and have close interaction with the wonderful students at the school. It’s safe to say that with caring teachers and a professional staff the children are in very capable hands and they love being in school at J.T. Barber. Next, the class traveled to The Epiphany School of Global Studies, Trent Rd. campus, to observe the middle and upper school programs. Mr. David Wang, the assistant Headmaster and Principal of the Upper School, met the group and gave introductions, to include the Headmaster, Dr. Dwight Carlblom, then turned the visit over to their student ambassadors. The students were quite impressive answering myriad questions while giving a comprehensive tour of the school and detailing its programs from academics to athletics. After a wrap up Q&A by Mr. Wang, lunch was served, and the class enjoyed a brief visit with some of the middle school students while they ate. All came away from Epiphany impressed with their faith based dedication to academic excellence as well as their penchant for community service, where the students participate in projects both locally and globally. Following lunch at Epiphany, the class carpooled to Havelock High School where they were greeted by Dr. Jeffrey Murphy, the principal. Dr. Murphy introduced the high school by showing a promotional video that was shot and edited by the students themselves. The video showcased everything from the plethora of clubs and educational options to the championship-winning football team. After the video Dr. Murphy led a tour through many of the classrooms that make up the school’s Career and Technical Education Department. In each classroom the group was able to learn about the teacher’s objectives, as well as see the students in action. A few of the impressive programs and specific assignments the Leadership Craven class observed include: Technology – developing video games / Engineering & Design – constructing and combining simple machines / Construction Technology – designing products with 3-D printers / Digital Media – video production / Automotive Service – repairing cars and other combustion engines

It was interesting to see how prepared the students could be to dive straight into industry or an advanced tech program right out of high school. Beyond the aforementioned courses, the high school also strives in more traditional courses such as English, Fine Arts, Math and Science. The final stop of the day was only a couple minutes down the road at Craven Community College’s Institute of Aeronautical Technology. Mr. Greg Purvis, Director of Aviation Programs, introduced the class to the IAT building and explained what they offer. As one of only four similar programs in North Carolina, the IAT uses hands-on training coupled with classroom lectures to develop skilled aviation workers. Perhaps the biggest opportunity the program puts before its students is the chance to pass the Federal Aviation Administration license exam. Furthermore, the program provides job placement assistance within Cherry Point as well as private commercial companies. Mr. Purvis led the class into the hanger where they were able to view the planes and helicopters the students work on to gain the valuable experience that prepares them for the field. The program is able to provide each student with an individual tool box, that they maintain throughout the semester. After the hanger, the class was able to visit various classes that included everything from welding, to mechanics and electronics. It was great to see how passionate Mr. Purvis and the rest of the program was about enabling their students to achieve in a rewarding career path.

Mr. Wally Calabrese, the Havelock campus Dean of Learning and Operations, gave the group a tour of the Redd Building on the Havelock campus where they teach their academic skills courses and also provide space for the NCSU 2+2 engineering degree program. The students who participate in this exciting program can obtain a 4-year Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree from NC State in Mechanical Engineering Systems (MES) without ever leaving Craven County.

Leadership Craven - Class Focus

Chris McCutcheon

Leadership Craven Class of 2014-15 – Classmate Focus

Everything we do is built on trust. It doesn’t happen with one transaction, in one day on the job or in one quarter. We earn it relationship by relationship. Our mission is to help our clients succeed financially and satisfy all their financial needs.

My role as the Business Banker for New Bern as well as the surrounding counties is to know and understand my client’s businesses and help them achieve that success, whatever they envision it to be. I try to spend time with them in order to understand their daily operations, what their goals are, what keeps them awake at night, and then provide strategies and solutions to meet those goals and sleep better. This can mean many different things as no two businesses or their owners are alike, and I have to be prepared to look at each one individually.

Wells Fargo and my team give me the resources and tools to offer solutions for clients with just about any issue. We have multiple contact points for clients to find immediate help for problem resolution and a dedicated team of professionals here in New Bern who directly serve our clients. I can plug my clients into the most robust suite of Treasury Services in the Industry, Payroll, Credit Card Processing, Foreign Exchange, Employee Benefits, all lines of Insurance, and of course all types of credit facilities. Whatever they need its one phone call away so they can focus on what matters, running their business. Wells Fargo has an unmatched resource of expertise across the country that we can utilize to your benefit and deliver the financial products and services that will help you grow and be successful. We make our credit decisions locally and all my clients have the opportunity to meet with those involved in credit decisions face to face here in New Bern.

I’ve just come to New Bern this summer, having spent the last 10 years in banking and the last 5 years in the same role in Winston Salem. Before that I owned my own business for 10 years so I have walked in your shoes and understand what it’s like to be a business owner. Come by my office on S Front St and speak with me, give me call, or send me an email. I would love the opportunity to come to you and learn more about you and your business.

New Bern Historical Society - From a Fire on the Beach to a Diamond in the Sky: the Evolution of Lighthouses and Light-Keeping in North Carolina/New Bern Historical Society’s Richard K. Lore Lecture, Sunday, November 16 at 2:00pm

This year’s annual lecture will be presented by maritime historian Kevin Duffus, at Cullman Performance Hall, NC History Center, Sunday, November 16 at 2pm. Kevin is a well-known researcher, author of four books, and documentary ilmmaker having produced four award-winning documentary ilms on North Carolina maritime history. A very popular speaker in New Bern, Kevin has presented at three other Richard K. Lore lectures. His From a Fire on the Beach to a Diamond in the Sky, will examine the evolution of lighthouses and light-keeping in North Carolina. With historic photographs, drawings and maps, Kevin will present a wide-ranging discussion of North Carolina’s rich heritage of guiding

mariners, a tradition which began nearly ive centuries ago. He will discuss the earliest recorded effort to guide a ship ashore, the earliest observed shipwreck on the Carolina coast, the primitive methods used during colonial times to establish beacons and channel markers, and how the architecture of lighthouses and keeper’s dwellings evolved over two centuries. You will be amazed by how the state’s lighthouses and beacons were blown-up, burned, and battered, and how lightships were sunk by wars and storms. Duffus will also describe shocking little-known stories of keepers, some who were hired for their political payoffs, one who was accused of purposely wrecking ships, and others who helped steal their own lenses. Join the New Bern Historical Society November 16 for this free event. No tickets or reservations are necessary. Immediately following the lecture there will be a reception in Mattocks Hall. This lecture is presented by the New Bern Historical Society in partnership with Tryon Palace, and is made possible by a grant from the North Carolina Humanities Council, a statewide nonpro it and af iliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

New Bern Historical Society

With historic photographs, drawings and maps, Kevin will present a wide-ranging discussion of North Carolina’s rich heritage of guiding mariners, a tradition which began nearly ive centuries ago. This lecture is presented by the New Bern Historical Society.
