Sports Nutrition Market in USA:-
The sports nutrition market is one of the biggest and fastest growing categories in USA according to Nutrition Business Journal. The robust growth in the sports nutrition market proves supplements are a core part of such a commitment. NMI’s 2009 Health & Wellness Trends Database reported 22 percent of consumers indicated they use sports nutrition products (amino acids, creatine, protein powders, sports hydration drinks, sports nutrition bars and sports nutrition supplements).
The current sports nutrition market within the US was worth $4.1bn in 2009. Although the category has expanded by 4.9% (CAGR 2003-2009), Business Insights expects a slowdown to a projected growth of 3.6% over the period 2009-2013
The figures for Canada are $171.8m in 2009 and $200.8m in 2013 According to Mintel, the sports and energy drink segment gained 164 percent in sales during 2002 to

Of the seemingly countless number of sports nutritional supplements in the market in USA, the popularity of product categories breaks down as so:
1.) Protein Powders/Prepared Drinks - 35%2.) Weight loss pills - 20%3.) Nutrition Bars/Energy Beverages - >20%4.) Creatine Monohydrate - 16%5.) Other - <10%
Of the many sport supplement companies out there, the top three in sales in USA are:
1.)BSN2.)Muscle Tech3.) Optimum Nutrition
(Will be discussed in detail in Competitor Section)
Those three companies account for 51% of the market with the remaining 49% divided among approximately 200 sports nutrition supplement manufacturers.
Some of the key facts supporting increase in overall sports nutrients supplements business in USA:-
The most recent data from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports that in 2007, 49% of the U.S. population engaged in recommended moderate-intensity physical activity, up from 45% in 2001. Increased physical activity was most pronounced among consumers aged 18–34 years old. Men aged 25–34 years old saw the biggest increase in activity, with the number increasing.
Initially this industry in USA was all about bulking up, bodybuilding and performance enhancement; but today, sports nutrition products are attracting a much broader, mass audience. It is now dealing with a new generation of consumers who have grown up knowing an active lifestyle has positive, long-term implications for health, fitness, weight management and longevity which derives the sales of such products

The Growing Need For Serious Fitness in USA
Obesity is a global problem that affects 300 million people worldwide. Nearly two-thirds, or 130 million adults in the United States are overweight, and nearly one-
third, or 61 million are obese. Approximately 15 percent of children and adolescents are overweight. Forty percent of U.S. adults are sedentary. Risk for heart disease and high blood pressure is two to four times higher among the 18 million
Americans with diabetes. An estimated 70 percent of diabetes risk in the U.S. can be attributed to excess weight. Heart disease is the number one cause of death in American women, killing six times as many
as breast cancer. Annual medical spending for the treatment of overweight and obese people is nearly $100
billion a year, approximately nine percent on U.S. health expenditures. As many as 300,000 adult deaths in the United States each year are attributable to unhealthy
dietary habits or physical inactivity. Exercise helps prevent heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, arthritis,
osteoporosis, insomnia and cancer. Exercise has been proven to reduce stress, anxiety and depression and increase energy, focus
and stamina. People who exercise regularly are happier, healthier and live longer.

Article about comparison between sub categories of Sports Nutrition Market like Energy drinks, Sports nutrition supplements and Energy bars and their demand in previous years in USA:-
Athletes want their supplements to be convenient, accessible and portable. Their demanding schedules require innovative applications, making it effortless to supplement their diets and schedules. “As consumers continue to learn about which ingredients can truly help them meet their fitness and sports goals, the market responds by offering a continual stream of new delivery systems in order to utilize these ingredients,” said Kevin Owen Ph.D., Nafta head of technical marketing and scientific affairs, LONZA. “There is a direct functional relationship between the science that supports the products, and the continual development and launch of new delivery systems to use these products.” New options such as energy shots are stocking grocery shelves, but oldies such as beverages, bars and powders are advancing and becoming more prominent in the sports nutrition arena. “There’s no question that energy shots and drinks are one of the biggest trends in sports nutrition,” Green said. “This growing market of active lifestyle enthusiasts need and want more energy—not just for their workouts, but also to help them get through their busy days.” Green noted Convenience Store News reported sales of energy shots doubled in 2009. “This is in spite of the fact that we’re in the middle of a recession. And a key sub-trend is the emerging emphasis on sports nutrition ingredients—especially thermogenic components—in both energy drinks and shots,” he said. Mintel reported in its June 2008 report an estimated total market size for ready-to drink (RTD) non-carbonated beverages at $40,993 million. However, in light of recent declining economic conditions, Mintel revised its estimates for RTD non-carbonated beverages with a growth of just 2.7 percent in 2008, compared to the previously published comparatively optimistic 2008 growth rate of 6.2 percent. Mintel noted, “The decline in RTD beverages is likely to be propelled by slower than expected growth in sports and energy drinks segment, where consumers are likely to retract demand for high-price energy drinks.” Steil found the three most popular delivery methods are capsules/tablets, powders and beverages. “There have been a few newer technologies that have evolved, such as creams, strips and effervescent or quick dissolve tablets, but they have not penetrated the market to any noticeable degree,” he said. “In addition to the basic capsules and tablets, drink sticks have become very popular to deliver nutrients for sports nutrition,” Simmons said. “The drink sticks are very convenient and can also help the athlete to stay hydrated during sporting events.” And companies such as Watson Inc. provide several fortification premixes for sports drinks, fortified waters and add-to-water type powdered beverages, as well as functional bars. “We see consumers wanting more than just good taste from their food, they also want functionality,” Alderton said. “So if they are going to reach for a beverage or bar anyway, consumers are now turning toward beverages or bars that provide taste and additional nutrients such as electrolytes, vitamins, minerals, protein, active ingredients. In effect, the food serves a dual purpose.” Adhering to GMPs, avoiding unsubstantiated label claims, implementing an effective system for avoiding adulterated products and product innovation all ensure the quality and success of the sports nutrition market. “Sports nutrition is constantly evolving and the immediate future will be no different.” Luchsinger said. “With people’s emphasis of quality of living and publication of reliable research, sports nutrition will become mainstream in the future,” Liu said. “ There will be more variety of new items coming out the market since the competition is crucial and every player tries to come up new stuff; market will be more mature, advance and stable.”

Case Study :- How to Start your own Sports Supplements Business
Starting your own body building supplement shop is a lucrative and profitable business. You need to assess on the products that you will sell in your store as this can make and break your entire business. If you are fitness fanatic, it might have cross your mind to start a business related to it. It is a good idea to turn a hobby into a money making venture. There are a lot of options for you. You might want to start a gym, become a personal trainer or start your own bodybuilding supplement shop. The last one may prove to be lucrative as there are quite few shops that deal with bodybuilding supplements
Any supplement company would be successful if they:
1. Are carried by the major supplement retailers or distributors.2. Are respected in the industry by competitors and customers.3. Are giving great results to people that buy and use their product.4. Are making a profit.
The following guidelines and tips can help you succeed where MANY have failed!
The following guidelines and tips can help you succeed where MANY have failed!A) Be Different:-
If you are starting a supplement line, it is very easy to simply try to copy the popular products that are on the market. We have seen too many supplement lines that have a generic whey protein, a creatine, a multi-vitamin, and a glutamine. Sometimes they also offer some basic copy-cat amino acids and usually have a version of the latest "hot" product.
So one should not have only these products, which are obviously all big sellers but should be more than this. A company that does not differentiate itself will not succeed. Unless you can offer your products cheaper than the leading brands, then why would customers choose your plain creatine product?
If you offer a few cutting-edge and unique products, you can round out your line with a plain creatine, whey protein, etc., since customers that are buying your unique products may want to add these other products to their supplement plan.
If you simply copy what 100 other brands already have, there is no reason for retailers to pick up your product or for customers to choose you over a bigger, more well-known brand.
B) Create Good Looking & Accurate Labels
You can have the greatest product in the world, but if it is not packaged nicely, it will not sell or be as trusted. Customers should not judge a book by its cover, but the fact of the matter is that they do. The supplement lines with the coolest and flashiest labels, often sell better even if they are the same as other lines. Customers (sometimes accurately) decide if a company knows what they are doing if the company spent time creating professional labels that have accurate information.
Hire a good graphic designer and don't accept anything but the best for your labels. Check the labels for accuracy and be sure you have the proper disclaimers on them. FDA requires certain statements to be made. Make sure you have the right ones by contacting FDA at http://www.fda.gov and also by studying the labels of well-known supplement companies.
3) Get Insurance
This is necessary. We all know that in this sue-happy world, a customer may blame some type of negative effect on your product, whether it is true or not. All of your hard work could go down the drain if you are not protected.
4) Keep Your Products In Stock
When we are out of a product, we try to tell customers to choose a different product. This means that the loyal buyer of your brand is now being introduced to another brand.
If it is not in stock, you can't make a sale. It doesn't matter if you have a huge demand for it or not.
e.g One recently went to the mall to buy some shoes from Foot Locker. He had $100 in his hand, ready to buy. The sales rep checked and they didn't have his size! All the work that Foot Locker did to create a store, advertise it and hire employees didn't matter. He was about to give them another $100 in revenue (on a slow day) and they would NOT let him do it. This is true in any company.
Keeping products in stock can be difficult, but it is worth applying effort to. You will be known as a reliable supplier and you will win new customers. Making the retailers look bad to their customers (the customer blames the retailer in their mind, not the supplement company) is not a good way to do business.
5) Create A Demand With Advertising
Unless you have some new and amazing product, people will not know about it if you do not advertise. When we look to pick up a new brand that we have not heard of, we ask them about their advertising programs. Are they advertising nationally? If not, why should we carry it? The last thing a retailer wants to do is spend money on a new brand and then just watch it collect dust until it expires.
Of course, if the product is different or new, retailers may still take a chance on it.
If you can afford it, advertising in the national muscle magazines not only will create a demand for your product, but it will have the retailers calling YOU to buy your product, rather than the other way around. The best thing you can do is make it so that customers ask retailers about your product.
6) Contact The Major Distributors
Once you have created the products and created a demand, if you can get a supplement distributor to pick up your line, it can take your company to new levels. Many retail stores simply purchase the brands that their distributors carry, since that is the easiest way to order.
This is not mandatory, and you can be successful by selling direct. In fact, if your pricing model depends on it, you may not want to have a middle-man.
7) Know The Science Or Hire Somebody That Does
Are you a supplement and biology guru? If not, you better become one before you create your products. You may be better at the business or advertising side of things, and hiring a "guru" may be a better idea. You can even contract a person that you do not hire to create a product for you for a fee.
The companies that are successful are constantly reviewing the latest supplement studies and creating their own tests.
Creating products that are not based on real science just brings this industry down and gives every company a bad reputation.
8) Create Marketing Materials For The Retailer To Use
Unless your brand is very well-known, do not expect to simply send the products to retailers without support materials. This is especially true if you succeeded in creating different and/or new products.
Giving the retailer informational brochures that they can give to customers and use to educate employees will help in a big way. The last thing a retailer wants is for a customer to ask them about your product and be left with no answers.
Customer: "Is this product any good?Employee: "Um? it's pretty good. I heard one guy whose friend used it got some good results."Customer: "What is this ingredient? hydroxy-amino-creatine-malate-tryptophan?"Employee: "Oh? HACMT is awesome! It really works."Customer: "How does it work?"Employee: "Um? uh? you take it orally and then workout and stuff."
That makes the retailer look bad and the product won't sell.
Other ideas for support material would be REAL testimonials, a place that employees can call for information, posters, stickers, free gifts for the customers, educational information for the employees, hand-outs, REAL before and after pics, or other things like this. Be creative. Also, be truthful. Don't make things up to sell products. It may work in the short-term, but in the long run you will lose in a big way.
9) Put Barcodes On All Of Your Labels
This is another simple tip that some companies don't follow. Putting a barcode on a label is as simple as downloading a barcode font from the Internet and putting in on the side of your product. For some reason, many companies do not do this, and it is a hassle for the retailer. Most retailers have a scanner for ringing up purchases in their store.
If your brand is one of the ones that they have to "manually" look up and enter in, it will be thought of as a pain in the butt. It also makes your company look less professional.
10) Create A Pricing Structure That Works
When pricing your product, you may either be tempted to charge too much for your product to make a big profit ("If I only sell 20 bottles a day, I will be rich!") or charge too little in order to sell more ("At $10 per bottle, I will be the cheapest and sell a ton!").
Charging too much will severely limit your sales, because unless your product is absolutely unlike anything out there and it works better, customers will not buy it. There is too much competition out there for a customer to choose your expensive brand otherwise. Be realistic rather than simply looking at the potential dollar signs.
Also, if you charge too much, many customers will simply not be able to afford it, even if they want the product. They will be forced to choose a different product. This will limit your sales.
On the other hand, if you try to set your price too low, you will make it hard for your company to make a profit (which can hopefully be re-invested in new science and/or marketing), and you will make it hard for the retailers to make a profit. Many retail stores simply can't survive by only making a few bucks per sale, since they have a lot of costs to keep their stores open.
It is easy to understand how some companies can charge too little for their products, and put themselves out of business. One day they run a sale on their creatine, and BAM!, sales increase by 50%! To a company owner, sales are like crack cocaine. They love sales and need sales to fuel their ego and they believe higher revenues always means more success. So the company leaves the creatine price at this low price in order to keep their sales up, not realizing that they are not making enough money to even pay their bills. When they realize what is happening, they raise the price back up, but the sales fall back down to normal, or even lower than normal since customers will be upset at the price increase.
Short-term sales are fine every once in awhile, but be careful about setting your prices so low that you can't survive.
To price effectively, study the market for similar products, look at all the costs involved in running your company, and keep in mind that the retailers who carry your line must also be able to make a profit and pay their bills. Test different pricing structures if you are unsure, until you find the perfect one for your company.
11) Have Your Products Tested
Most likely you will be having your products manufactured by another company. Be sure to choose a company with a good reputation, and demand that you get a certificate of analysis for every batch that they run for you. If they won't do it, or if you do not trust that they are doing it correctly, do not use them, even if they have the best prices.
Get your products tested from time to time from another third party to be sure.
If it comes out that your products do not meet what your labels say they are, your company is pretty much through. Start over with a new name if you think you can.
This hurts the industry as a whole since customers will wonder if other brands are as "shady" as you are. The media also loves these kind of negative stories, as we all learned from the ephedra fiasco.
12) Create Products That Work
This is the most important tip of all. If your products do not work, you will not be successful. End of discussion. If you spend millions in advertising, you may make money in the short-term, but it will not last. Customers will only be burned once, and they will tell everybody they know (and millions that they don't know on the Internet). You will be hurting the industry since customers will be leery of other products on the market.
Test your products. Use real science. If a product is a dud, discontinue it or don't come out with it at all. Word of mouth is by far the most powerful form of advertising and it will make or break your business, your investment, and your hard work.
13) BONUS! The Secret To Getting Any Store To Carry Your Line
So if you have the done the above, what is the next step? Obviously, getting your product on the sites and shelves of the leading supplement retailers is the only way to true success. Selling it by yourself on your own site or in your own store limits your revenue in a huge way.
You want to have your products in front of as many supplement buying customers as possible.
So how do you convince a site or store owner to spend their money and time in order to carry your line? They have probably been contacted by five other companies this week alone!
The secret is to give them free product to start with.
If you send them a small amount of each product in your line, absolutely free, the offer is almost too hard for any retailer to resist. They can put in on their shelves or on their site, and make 100% profit with no strings attached. Why not at least give it a try, and if it doesn't sell, they haven't lost anything, and if it does sell, they have just made money for nothing.
The thing is, once they have spent the time putting the product into their company systems or onto their site, it is easy for them to place an order with you.
Also, they have introduced your products to their customers. If these customers liked your product, they will come back to purchase again. The retailer needs to keep it in stock to please their loyal customers! They have no choice but to place an order. It's a win-win situation.
This obviously won't work if your product has a bad reputation, horrible labels, or something else that will make the retailer uneasy.
14) Conclusion
So that's it. Pretty easy, huh? If you work hard and always keep the customer in mind at ALL times, you can succeed. You can help the industry to improve and make a lot of friends at the same time. Isn't that what everybody wants?

Live Experience of 2 People who started their Supplement Business!!
A) Mr NATHANIEL :-
Hi there, I have been trying to start my online supplement business for years now. It's more work then you would think. Tons and tons of data entry. I have used and tested many distributors. www.Europasports.com is the main one that most people use. www.bossonline.net is o.k. but they recently lost a few good manufacturers such as cytosport. So I do not recommend them as Muscle Milk by Cytosport is too big of a seller to miss out on. After you fill out there online form and submit your business license you are in and can then gain access to their online catalog and even get FTP access to download their inventory and excel sheets with pricing. However when dealing with these companies they will give you high prices and hope you keep your mouth shut. First things first, ask for the discount below wholesale excel sheet. These are deep discounts. Some are up to 30% below the original prices they give you. Now we are talking business. Now you have to be a wiz with excel. which I have gotten pretty good at creating the formulas needed for the pricing and inventory. You must also remember that Europasports.com has over 5,000 products that will all need descriptions and need inventory update at least a couple of times a week. Europasports.com do drop shipping meaning you don't keep any inventory you simply forward your orders to europasports.com then they bill you and you pocket the market that you billed the customer. Also, your discount below wholesale is not as deep if you do the drop shipping program. But I think the drop shipping is worth it as you only lose a small percentage on the discount usually around 2 to 5 percent. You will also need to know a little HTML and FTP depending on the shopping cart software you use. I have used a couple. I recommend 3dcart.com as you have control over your metatags, urls, description, titles, HTML, CSS, many other cool things as well. I do not recommend godaddy.com their shopping cart software is terrible. you will not have control over any of the things I listed above. Once you get into it you will realize how important these things are. If your website is not indexed by google and yahoo then you will not be found and you will not have a chance. 3dcart.com software is pretty good. I got indexed by google and yahoo in no time. However I have just given up on building my supplement website. It has just proven to be too much data entry. If I could find a business partner or two that are willing to sacrifice as much time as I am we could hang with the big dogs like bodybuilding.com, massnutrition.com and many more. Bodybuilding.com claims millions in sales each year. I would love to have a piece of that Nathaniel, [email protected]

A brief Introduction about Laws and Framework in Nutrition Business in USA with Uses and Sideaffects of some Supplements
Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act
Signed on Oct 25 1994 Congress’s intent was to meet the concerns of consumers and manufacturers to help ensure
that safe and appropriately labeled products remain available to those who want to use them. Definition, new framework for safety, outline guidelines for literature displayed, claims,
ingredients Congress passed DSHEA in 1994 on the basis of two quite questionable assumptions: that
supplements are basically harmless, and that supplement makers are honest.
How to choose supplements:-
Look for standardized supplements (USP)
Buy only single-name supplements
Beware of claims that sound too good to be true
Be extremely cautious about supplements manufactured outside of USA
Europe is an exception
The distinctive USP Verified Mark represents that USP has rigorously tested and verified the supplement, to assure the following:
1. What's on the label is in fact in the bottle—all the listed ingredients in the declared amount.
2. The supplement does not contain harmful levels of contaminants.
3. The supplement will break down and release ingredients in the body
4. The supplement has been made under good manufacturing practices.
USP is an independent, not-for-profit organization. No other organization in the U.S. that tests supplements is recognized in federal law as the nation's official standard-setting body for medicines and supplements. USP standards are enforceable by the FDA.
Sample Labelling (Single Name Supplements)
It Should Include:-
Brand name Dose Amt of Active Ingredient Subscription needed for full details
For more details visit http://www.consumerlab.com/
Key Points to Remember:-
Supplements not meant to replace foods, but to supplement diet Use peer-reviewed non-biased scientific trials to determine effectiveness Double blind Placebo controlled “If it doesn’t have a side effect, it probably doesn’t work.”
Some Famous Supplements with their Uses and Side affects:-
Amino Acid powders/Protein drinks
Creatine
Anabolic Steriods & Precursors
Ephedra
a) Amino Acids:-
Amino Acids are building blocks of proteins. They are in Powder form for sport performance/body building .There are 20 different amino acids, get varying amounts from protein containing foods. They increase muscle size and help in weight gain.
Dosing and Side Effects:-
Dosing:
1-2 scoops of powder (2-4 Tbsp) before work out, variable upon brand
Usually mix with water or milk*(Usually whey protein)
Side Effects:
Well-tolerated
Stomach cramping, diarrhea, weight gain
Consider whole foods
b) Creatine:-
Phosphocreatine for energy
ATP -> Phosphocreatine -> Glucose -> Fat
Best used in sports/events needing short bursts of energy
Sprinting
Wrestling
Shot put
Side effects and use:-
Side Effects
Nausea
Cramping
Diarrhea
Stomach pain
May cause kidney and liver problems
Use
Most athletes consume 20-30 g/day, but studies done on athletes using 5 g/day, as the manufacturer recommends
~5% of middle and high schoolers had used creatine
May lead to more dangerous supplement use
c) Anabolic Steroids:-
Synthetic form of testosterone
Gels
Tablets
Injections
Patches
Build muscle and increase endurance
3 million people use steroids, 1 in 4 started as teens, 1 in 10 is a teen
Side Effects:-
Halt bone growth
Permanently short stature
Heart damage
Liver damage
d) Steroid precursors:-
Androstenedione
Androstenediol
Norandrostenedione
Norandrostenediol
Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA)
*All precursors will have similar side effects as anabolic steroids
e) Ephedra (Ma Huang):-
Used by athletes to reduce fatigue, increase mental awareness, and induce weight loss
Weight loss shown when used in combination with caffeine, when used alone results questionable
Side Effects
Strokes
Seizures
Heart Attack
Increase blood pressure
Death
* FDA in hard position since it cannot ethically test ephedra’s safety at low dosages. FDA does think ephedra is harmful
* According to a recent study conducted by the University of Michigan, 25% of girls turn to pills when trying to lose weight
