“Bangor Business School provided me with a solid academic grounding in economics and business. What I learned at Bangor I still use today in my position as Chief UK Economist at Deutsche Bank in London. The standard of teaching was excellent. Bangor Business School set me up for life, and has helped me enormously in my subsequent studies and my job.”

BANGOR UNIVERSITY Bangor University was established in 1884 and enjoys a long tradition of excellence in teaching and research. Students from all parts of the UK and many countries worldwide choose to study at Bangor every year, creating a student population of over 10,000 students.

We fi nd that our specialist programmes, the safety of the area and the lower cost of living make Bangor a popular choice amongst students – with the added bonus of living between the mountains and the sea in one of the most beautiful parts of the UK.

Bangor is a student-oriented and student-friendly city. Its compact nature means that student facilities, University buildings, accommodation and the city centre are all

within easy walking distance. As it’s easy to move around the city, our students fi nd it easier to settle down and meet up in the evening with new friends.

You and your family will naturally be concerned about safety. You can have peace of mind, because Bangor is considered to be a relatively safe place to study, as the crime rate for North Wales is one of the lowest in the UK.

Faced with three years of fees and costs, students and their families are also encouraged to learn that the cost of living in Bangor is amongst the lowest in the UK. A recent cost-of-living survey published by The Independent newspaper confi rmed Bangor as the 4th best value university city in the UK.

LOCATION

The A55 expressway along the North Wales coastline provides fast and easy access to and from the main UK motorway network. Manchester International Airport is within a one-and-a-half hour drive along the Expressway/Motorway. Rail connections to Crewe and London are direct and ferry connections from nearby Holyhead to Ireland are fast and frequent.

BSc/BA ACCOUNTING & FINANCE

BSc/BA ACCOUNTING & BANKING

BSc/BA ACCOUNTING & ECONOMICS

By studying for a degree in Accounting and Finance, you will acquire skills that are central to the management of organisations, for measuring performance and maintaining the cash fl ows that are essential for the prosperity of any private company or public sector organisation.

Accounting has been defi ned as the measurement and disclosure of fi nancial information that is used by managers, investors and others to make decisions about the allocation of resources within organisations.

Therefore accounting is much more than just the mechanical manipulation of fi nancial data to produce company accounts. The methods for preparing accounting information must be applied with judgement, and with an understanding

of the purposes for which the information will be used. A wide range of decision makers need to understand the key principles which underpin a cost or profi t fi gure produced by an accountant.

The Accounting and Finance programme is accredited by ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certifi ed Accountants), the global body for professional accountants. Accreditation gives you automatic exemption from the examinations in some Part One ACCA subjects, currently F1 – F6 and F8. The programme described in this brochure has been restructured with a view to achieving qualifi cation for additional Part One ACCA exemptions. The process of applying for additional exemptions is underway during the lifetime of this brochure.

A degree in Accounting and Banking or Accounting and Economics offers you the opportunity to combine study of Accounting with one of Bangor Business School’s other main specialisms, in either Banking or Economics. Current accreditation

arrangements give you automatic exemption from some of the examinations for the Part One ACCA subjects depending on your choice of modules.

BSc/BA BANKING & FINANCE

A degree in Banking and Finance offers you the opportunity to study the theory and practice of fi nancial services and fi nancial markets, and to analyse the broader role of the fi nancial sector in the national and global economies.

Banking and fi nancial services is a highly competitive and rapidly changing sector in every modern economy. In recent years, forces such as globalisation, technological change, deregulation and international integration have fundamentally transformed the banking and fi nancial services sector.

Banks have responded to growing competitive pressure by diversifying into new activities such as insurance,

mutual funds, private banking and asset management. Non-bank institutions such as supermarkets and telecommunications fi rms now compete directly in fi nancial services markets.

This degree offers you the opportunity to combine a core programme of study in banking and fi nance with a wide selection of optional modules in economics, business and management.

BSc/BA BUSINESS ECONOMICS

A degree in Business Economics will appeal to anyone who wishes to study economic issues at local, national and international levels, while developing practical skills in business, fi nance and management, which will subsequently be attractive to employers in both the private and public sectors.

Economics has been defi ned as the study of human choice, and the impact of choice on the production, distribution

and consumption of scarce resources. Microeconomics deals with choice at the individual level, and macroeconomics analyses the economy as a whole.

This degree includes a core microeconomics and macroeconomics component, and a specialism focusing on the economic context of business decision making. You will develop an awareness of applications of economics in areas including business management, fi nance and public policy. “Bangor Business School provides an excellent environment in which to study Banking and Finance. The lectures gave me the skills to put theoretical knowledge into practice, and to think critically about the topics introduced in my studies. I feel confi dent that the skills and abilities learnt during my time at Bangor will prove invaluable in the rest of my academic life and in my future career. Winning the ‘Best Performance in Economics’ prize during my graduation ceremony was a defi nite highlight and proves just how far I came in my studies.”

For me, the highlight of my time at Bangor was the interest that the staff took in the progress of their students, and the inspiration that they bestowed in me as an individual. Their positive reaction to my work has given me great confi dence – so much so that I have decided to remain at Bangor to pursue a Masters.”

“My course placed a great emphasis on reconciling theory with practical real-world concerns – something which is facilitated by the fact that the academic staff are respected industry experts and still very much involved in things like policy making. Recent developments within the present economic environment require new graduates to possess a good grasp of business ethics, and the direction of the courses at Bangor Business School ensures that all its graduates are trained to meet this demand.

The degree title would reflect your combination of subjects, such as Business Studies and French or Economics and History.

If you register for a Joint Honours degree course, you will normally take 6 modules (60 credits) in each of the two subjects in each academic year. There are a few minor exceptions: on some Joint Honours courses you will take 8 modules in one subject and 4 modules in the other subject in Year 1.

For the Joint Honours degrees that combine either:Business Studies or Marketing with a modern language (French, German, Italian or Spanish) in addition to a half-and-half combination (6 modules in each subject), alternative combinations are also possible whereby one-third of modules (4 modules) are taken in one subject and two-thirds (8 modules) in the other subject. Degrees that involve one-half or two-thirds of language study are 4 year programmes, with Year 3 spent abroad developing proficiency in the language studied. Degrees that involve one-third of language study are 3 year programmes based entirely in Bangor.

Pages 22 – 26 show the Bangor Business School component of the Joint Honours courses that combine a Business School subject with a subject from another school. Please note that the course structures, lists of modules and other details shown on pages 22 – 26 are subject to revision from time to time. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONSWHEN WILL I STUDY?

Each Semester contains 11 or 12 weeks when lectures and classes take place. These are followed by a short period for revision, and an examination period, which lasts for 2 weeks at the end of Semester 1, and 3 - 4 weeks at the end of Semester 2.

The dates of the academic year for the 2013 – 2014 session are as follows:

Welcome week: 23.09.13 (1 week)Semester 1: 30.09.13 (12 weeks)Vacation: 23.12.13 (3 weeks)Return and assess: 13.01.14 (2 weeks)Semester 2: 27.01.14 (10 weeks)Vacation: 07.04.14 (3 weeks)Return: 28.04.14 (2 weeks)Assess: 12.05.14 (4 weeks)End: 06.06.14

CAN I CHANGE MY DEGREE COURSE AFTER MY STUDIES HAVE BEGUN?

Yes. All Bangor Business School Single Honours degree courses have a common compulsory component in Year 1. This means you have complete fl exibility to switch between any of these degree courses at any time up to and including the start of Year 2. If you register for any Joint Honours degree course including a Bangor Business School subject, you have the fl exibility to switch to the Single Honours degree course in the same subject at any time up to and including the start of Year 2. In most cases, you also have the fl exibility to switch onto the Single Honours degree course in the other Joint Honours subject.

DO I NEED A-LEVEL MATHEMATICS?

No. A GCSE grade C (or equivalent) is the only essential entry requirement in Mathematics. At Bangor, we will show you how you can apply mathematics to business, economics or fi nance problems, but we will not teach you mathematics for its own sake. The Quantitative Methods modules in Years 1 and 2 are designed to help you develop your numeracy skills and confi dence in mathematics and quantitative methods.

HOW MANY HOURS PER WEEK WILL I SPEND IN LECTURES AND CLASSES?

Your typical weekly class contact time will add up to around 12 hours. Of course, you will be required to spend some of your remaining time in private study, doing assignments and preparing for exams. At University, it is your responsibility to organise your time when you are not in class. It is important to strike a sensible balance between the time you allocate to your academic and your non-academic activities. Good time management is one of the most important keys to having both a successful academic record and an enjoyable social life as a University student.

ASSESSMENTMost modules are assessed by a mixture of coursework (or other continuous assessment) and examination. Coursework will normally account for 25 – 40% and examinations for 60 – 75% of the fi nal mark, however there may be a few exceptions. The pass mark in all assessments is 40%.

At the end of Year 3, your fi nal degree classifi cation depends on your overall mark: a weighted average of your Year 2 average mark (one-third weighting) and your Year 3 average mark (two-thirds weighting).

BANGOR BUSINESS SOCIETY

The Bangor Business Society was launched in 2011/12 academic year. The purpose of the society is to foster a sense of community within the Business School by trying to include the students in as many academic and social activities throughout the year as possible. The Business School is unique within the University in that it has a diverse group of students from different countries around the world entering all three years of study. This in turn offers students a chance to broaden their learning environment by interacting with people they may not have had the chance to before.

Working closely with the staff, the Society aims to facilitate learning experiences for students from all years that can be used to put on their CV and to build on what they learn in the classrooms. For budding Marketers, there’s the opportunity to undertake hands-on projects with local companies which are then put into practice. For future investors, there’s the Stock Market Challenge which offers the chance to play the markets in a safe way. The Society also arranges visits to graduate fairs which are an invaluable opportunity to meet with prospective employers of the future.

IBM UNIVERSITIES CHALLENGE

In recent years Bangor Business School students have had great success in the IBM Universities Business Challenge, a prestigious and highly competitive contest in which undergraduates from universities throughout the UK participate in a series of realistic, simulated business scenarios.

As well as enabling students to develop their employability, team-work and leadership skills, the Challenge is seen as a valuable opportunity for students to network with and to be head-hunted by recruiters.

CIM STUDENT CHAPTER

Students of Bangor Business School run a CIM (Chartered Institute of Marketing) student chapter association which organises a range of marketing events and activities, enabling students to put into practice what is learnt in lectures.

For the third year running, Bangor Business School students have been involved in an end-of-term campaign to reduce waste problems in Bangor.

The “Pirates go ARRR (Always Reduce Reuse Recycle)” campaign, where partners worked together to tackle the annual problem of end of term waste of rubbish spilling on to the street and other public places, was developed and led by the University’s Marketing Society in conjunction with Gwynedd Council. The student-led campaign used a humorous and light-hearted pirate theme to raise awareness of the need to dispose of rubbish and recycling responsibly.

STUDENT ACCOMMODATIONUNIVERSITY MANAGED ACCOMMODATION & HALLS OF RESIDENCE

Moving away from home can be a big step so you don’t want to be worrying about finding a place to live. That’s why first-year students who choose to study at Bangor University are guaranteed a place in one of the 2,000 rooms available in our halls of residence.

Living in student accommodation is a great opportunity to meet new people from different backgrounds and make friends for life. There’s always a warden on call 24 hours a day.

You’ll get your own private space because all our rooms are single study bedrooms. After accepting an offer at Bangor, you’ll be able to apply for accommodation. All accommodation is self-catered, and you’ll be asked to indicate whether you prefer a standard or en-suite room. You can also hook up to the internet using your own PC, as internet access is available in all single study bedrooms.

The University’s location is superb and although we can’t guarantee you a room with a view, many of our students wake up every morning to see the Snowdonia Mountains or the sea. Not only that but you’ll be glad to know that Bangor has one of the lowest living costs in the UK. Halls fees compare very well with other universities, and if you wake up late you don’t have to worry about missing your lecture because all halls are within walking distance of the main University departments and city centre.

All accommodation is self-catered, and kitchens are shared with fellow students. Equipment provided in the kitchens varies from residence to residence, but all will have basic facilities, such as cookers, fridges and freezers. Students need to bring their own cutlery, pots, pans and crockery.

STANDARD ACCOMMODATION (SHARED FACILITIES)

Standard self-catered accommodation has private bedrooms and shared bathroom and kitchen facilities. There are always baths and showers available. The bedrooms in the standard accommodation are usually larger than the en-suite accommodation.

EN-SUITE ACCOMMODATION

Self-catered en-suite rooms feature bedrooms with a private shower and toilet in a more recently built residence. You will share your kitchen facilities with fellow students from the same corridor.

Bangor has a lower cost of living than many parts of the UK and the University’s accommodation fees reflect this. Fees are calculated for the full academic session.

The rent for university managed accommodation is between £2,990 (£75 per week) and £4,039 (£101 per week) for a 40-week period. The rent covers water and electricity.

For further information about accommodation fees and how to apply for halls: www.bangor.ac.uk/accommodation

The cost of living is lower than in most UK cities, so you can make the most of your money in what is a very pleasant environment in which to work and study.

The opportunity to fi nd part-time work is important to some students, and the student employment bureau within theCentre for Careers and Opportunities can help you fi nd suitable work.

Also worth bearing in mind is the fact that, compared to many other University cities, Bangor is a safe place to be a student. The crime rate for North Wales is one of the lowest in the UK.

While Bangor itself is compact and convenient, the surrounding area offers plenty of wide open spaces.

The mountains and coastline of Snowdonia provide an area of outstanding natural beauty, offering you wonderful recreational opportunities whether you’re interested in outdoor activities or just want to enjoy the scenery. Bangor is exceptionally well-situated and well-equipped for students interested in sport – especially those involving the great outdoors. Rock climbing, sailing, diving, mountain biking, canoeing and surfi ng are just some of the activities available, as well as team sports such as rugby, hockey and football. Indoor sports are also well catered for.

However, don’t think you need to be sporty to come here – many of our students just like the fact that Bangor is in such a scenic location: safer, cleaner and far friendlier than many larger places. There is easy access to both the sea and some

spectacular beaches as well as to the mountains, and there is plenty to do in and around Snowdonia. Historical towns such as Beaumaris, Conwy and Caernarfon (which all have their own castles) or picturesque places such as Beddgelert, Llanberis and Betws-y-Coed are well worth a visit.

As a popular holiday destination, North Wales has much to offer in terms of tourist attractions and sights such as the Snowdon Mountain Railway and Thomas Telford’s famous Suspension Bridge. For day trips, the Victorian resort town of Llandudno and historical Chester are both easy car or train journeys away, while the fast ferry service from Holyhead to Ireland means a day trip to Dublin is also a popular option.

BANGOR & NORTH WALES Bangor is very much a University city. The entertainment and nightlife is student-oriented and student-led.

“wonderful position. on one side are the mountains of the Snowdonia national park, on the other side is the Menai Strait…boasts the best university setting in the uK, with parts within 6 feet of the sea.”The Independent’s A-Z of universities and Higher education colleges
