b More colour, more w o r k

c A r t and t he of f ice env i ronment

ompanies have always used a r two rk ¡n the public aneas o f thei r offices in orden t o p romote • thein image. They usually choose abstract art, which is mone neutral and open t o interpretat ion

than tradit ional paintings, but they tend t o avoid controversial works , because they do not know how people might react and they don ' t want t o upset thei r staff o r thei r customers. However, nowadays, companíes are no longer investing thei r prof i ts ín ar t just t o project a distinctive, go-ahead image. Psychologists have discovered that carefully chosen a r two rk can reduce employee stress. W i t h more people spending longer hours in the office looking at thei r computers, ar t is a stimulating alternative focus. It is the 'new caffeine' according t o one leading psychologist - providing stimulation in dull and bor ing offices.

The t roub le w i th many new open-plan offices, w i th rows and rows of computers, is that they are sterile o r bland. A r t gives splashes of colour, though colour ¡tself can be a problem. There is no doubt that colours are very powerfu l and can reduce o r raise stress levéis, says consultant Theo Gimbel. Bright reds and oranges make people w o r k faster. But if colour can ¡ncrease output , it can also exhaust workers so that they star t t o make errors. He recommends an office scheme that is mainly blue, t o p romo te calm, w i th some pastel orange colours t o raise creative energy levéis. So does putt ing a r t on the walls w o r k just like a pay rise? Deutsche Bank, which employs about 10,000 people in the City, certainly thinks so. It has 2,500 works by wel l -known contemporary artists at its London Wal l offices. The collection is w o r t h about £2.5 million.
