BUSINESS BRIEFS

County of Brant Launches New Economic Development WebsiteCounty Council and staff, in collaboration with the Brant Economic Development Advisory Committee and local company, Blueprint Agencies, launched a new economic development website to attract new, relocating and expanding business to the County of Brant.

The website, which can be viewed at www.investinbrant.ca was developed to provide information to a broad range of people including corporate executives, site selectors and people who are considering relocating to the County.

The Department is excited about the new website which provides fresh, in-depth content and intuitive navigation to help spread the word of the County’s strong economy and enviable lifestyle. Potential investors will find the simple but effective format of the website, including its interactive site selection feature, to be a valuable tool. Through the website, the Economic Development and Strategic Investments Department looks to continue to create opportunities and support individual and business prosperity in the County.

“By highlighting the picturesque beauty of the County of Brant, the qualities that make our community such a desirable location, and the opportunities for development, we are poised to accommodate all types of new investment,” says County of Brant Mayor, Ron Eddy.

To find out how the County of Brant can be your ideal location, please call 519-442-6324 or e-mail [email protected].

The Brantford Identity Project

A special committee made up of representatives from all sectors of the community is asking the public to provide their input in response to one deceivingly simple sounding question: “Brantford, who are we?” The Brantford Identity Group has been tasked with identifying the unique attributes of Brantford.

Community participation and input will assist the group in capturing the essence of the community. Once gathered, that data will be used when developing a roadmap for how the city positions itself through overall corporate branding, which will impact everything from community notices and advertisements, to websites, signs, and communications with potential investors.

“When some people hear the word ‘branding’ they immediately assume that we are coming up with a new logo,” says Charlene Nicholson, CEO of the Brantford-Brant Chamber of Commerce. “Corporate branding is really about much more than that. It’s about defining – in a very genuine way – the true personality of our community, and incorporating that image into all we do as a municipality.” Nicholson and artist Jack Jackowetz are co-chairs of The Brantford Identity Project Group.

“Clarity and consistency are key,” Nicholson continues. “Our committee wants to step back, take stock of who we are today as a community, and refine how we present ourselves to our citizens, visitors, and business partners in the future.”

“The Brantford Identity Project is the most talented and harmonious group I have been involved with,” says Jackowetz. “We have representation from all facets of local business, the arts community, the local media and several knowledgeable advertising professionals, all of whom have generously given their time and expertise to this project. All promotions for the project in our newspapers and on the radio have been donated by local media sources and the initial branding for the group was created by Octopus Red.”

The Brantford Identity Project website can be accessed at www.TheBrantfordIdentityProject.ca.

DOWNTOWN PULSE DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Laurier / YMCA Athletics and Recreation Complex

A new multifunctional recreational and athletics complex is one step closer to becoming a reality thanks to a partnership between the governments of Canada, Ontario and Brantford, Wilfrid Laurier University and the YMCA of Hamilton/Burlington/Brantford.

The facility will replace the temporary YMCA and the Laurier Brantford athletic facilities, and serve the growing athletic and recreation demands of Brantford area residents, as well as students from Laurier Brantford, Nipissing University, Mohawk College and Six Nations Polytechnic. The new complex will include a dual-tank aquatic centre for teaching, fitness, therapy and leisure; a fitness centre consisting of multipurpose spaces for group fitness; and a gymnasium with retractable seating for up to 1,200 spectators. Students and residents will also benefit from social, cultural and educational programming offered at the facility.

“The Laurier YMCA Athletic Complex will be a catalyst in bringing people to the downtown and integrating citizens of our community with post-secondary development. Citizens and students will have access to a world-class facility that will attract further investments and continue to enhance our downtown,” said Mayor Chris Friel.

“This project is critically important to the expansion of Laurier’s Brantford campus,” said Laurier President Max Blouw. “Federal, provincial and municipal investments in this project highlights the tremendous importance of Laurier’s partnerships in the community.”

The total estimated cost of the recreation and athletic complex is $58.4 million. Contributions of $16.7 million will come from both the federal and provincial governments, and $5.8 million from the City of Brantford, with the remainder coming from Wilfrid Laurier University and the YMCA of Hamilton/Burlington/Brantford.

SMALL BUSINESS MATTERS

Emerging “Boomerpreneurs”With a third of the Canadian workforce predicted to retire over the next five years, a growing number of retirees are looking to use the opportunity to start a business.

According to Industry Canada, 40% of workers over 65 are self-employed and, over the past decade, the overall number of self-employed workers has increased by 17%. The Boomerpreneur phenomenon could lead to Canada experiencing a surge of new businesses that could provide an economic boost in the long-term.

The Boomerpreneur trend appeals for a variety of reasons, including:

•The sense of independence that comes with owning one’s own business. Imagine setting your own hours and creating a schedule that works for you.

•The chance to realize a long awaited dream, but never having had the time or capital to do so. Imagine creating a business from a passion and actually making money doing it.

•The desire to keep the mind active and the opportunity for social interaction that can come with operating a small business. Imagine meeting new people, attending small business workshops and networking functions, and learning from others who own their own business. You will be challenged in ways that you were not when you worked for someone else.

Where Do You Start?

Whether you are interested in starting a small business now or intend to wait until retirement, now is the time to explore the possibilities. Consider these tips:

•Find out if your personality suits being your own boss. What are the traits of an entrepreneur?

•Research your business idea. Just because you build it, doesn’t mean people will come.

•Develop a business plan. It is an essential part of getting your small business up and running.

Post-Secondary Workshop for Business The growth of post-secondary institutions in Brantford presents a unique opportunity for businesses that serve this emerging market. In August, the City of Brantford Economic Development & Tourism Department and the Brantford-Brant Business Resource Centre partnered with the Downtown Brantford BIA to present the “Post-Secondary Audience Development for Business” workshop. The event was hosted by Nipissing University at the Schulich School of Education and provided an opportunity for downtown businesses to learn about the post-secondary market and identify tactics for attracting and retaining this growing customer base.

The workshop offered a networking breakfast followed by a panel discussion that included perspectives from staff, students and businesses who serve the post-secondary market. In addition to the presenting partners, 30 participants took part in the workshop.

Downtown BIA board member David Prang moderated the discussion. Prang provided an overview of the post-secondary audience and its growth in the downtown core.

Targeted towards small- to medium-sized businesses, primarily in the downtown and urban growth area, the workshop aimed to help businesses identify what services students and staff are looking for and which marketing tactics are most effective for reaching those on campus.

Topics discussed include: the importance of an online presence and word-of-mouth recommendations; using appropriate media for your target market (email, social media, print); focusing social activities/events in the midweek when students are in town; on-campus advertising; and incentive tactics such as discount program ideas like Facebook Check-in Deals.
