2013 Jackrabbit Derby
There was near perfect racing weather at the Jackrabbit Derby this year and the runners who toed the line at roughly 8:15am took full advantage judging by some of the times.
There were fully 10 efforts worthy of the All Time List out of a field of 109 participants.
That does not include the 22 Bunny Hoppers who ran their approx. 1K race fifteen minutes earlier that morning.
Piner HS led by coach and guru Luis Rosales continues to dominate this event.
Jaime Silva improved from 5th All Time on the course (2011 15:55) to 2nd in a brilliant time of 15:18 only ten seconds off fellow Prospector Luis Lunas’ mark set in 2011. Jaime was followed closely by Efren Reyes who climbed from 10th all time (2011 16:21) to 4th all time in 15:34. Not to be outdone, Tyler Harwood took over the 10th spot in a fast 16:08.
Other record setting performances on the men’s side included Job Skandara – 2nd all time age 12 and under in 19:15, Olympian Stephen Agar – 3rd all time age 40-49 in 16:48 and Carl Jackson 1st all time age 80+ in 30:45.
On the women’s side nobody cracked the All Time Top Ten – though Paloma Romero missed 10th place by a mere 5 seconds with her time of 19:21.
Other notable achievements on the women’s side included McKenna Sell – 1st all time age 12 and under in 21:44 and Kathy Kelly – 3rd all time age 60-69 in 30:35.
The youngest competitor of the day in the full 3 Mile race was Sarah Skandara age 8 who finished in 24:40.
Once an extreme rarity, there were seven runners age 12 or younger in the full race.
There still have been zero women finishers over the age of 69. So I look forward to seeing them soon!
No race goes off without the intense efforts of the race day and other volunteers! I would especially like to thank Carl Triola and his Casa Grande HS crew for once again providing excellent course monitoring.
Other volunteers who I am indebted to include in no particular order: Catherine and Stephen Rauch, Jon Hermstad, Larry and Tori Meredith, Laurie Martin, Jon Hermstad, Eric Downing, Jen and Will Ortlinghaus, Scott Ames, Bob Rogers, Jerry Lyman, John Anderson, Robin Stovall, Bill and Jeanie Browne, Chris Mason, Gil Moreno, Paul Berg, Dave DeSelle, Jim Parks and anyone else I missed! If you helped, did not race and are concerned about getting your Grand Prix points please contact me asap!

The Long and Short of It
Remembering Boston
In the years ahead runners will probably remember where they were when they first heard of the bombings at the Boston Marathon. I overheard one of my work mates questioning someone on the phone about something “at the finish line”. It didn’t click at first that anything was wrong until she asked me if I knew anyone running there. Soon I like everyone else, knew all too well what had happened. Over the next few days I was asked at least ten times by all kinds of people, most who know little or nothing about running if I was at or knew someone else who was at Boston that day. Some of these people I had not heard from for months or even years. It was nice to know that they cared.
I felt, like I suspect many thousands of others felt that day – violated and powerless. I watched the unfolding events with a mixture of shock and rage. Mostly I wanted to do something. I wanted to support the victims and their families and I wanted to express some of that same spirit of resiliency evidenced by the people of Boston.
Like many thousands of others I made a donation to ONE Fund at https://secure.onefundboston.org which has raised over $28M to date.
$28M is a lot of money no matter how you look at, but many of the victims will have huge medical bills not just today but for the rest of their lives. No money however can ever fill the void left by the deaths of Martin Richard, Lingzi Lu, Krystal Campbell and Sean Collier. All of them were young, Martin just 8 years-old. We will never know what they may have become.
What we do know is that three of them were near the finish line in Boston, a place near and dear to many of us who have run there or who hope one day to run there. They were all supporting the runners, their friends, their family as well as perfect strangers in what was their moment of
triumph until the bombs went off. The fourth was one of those special people who put themselves between us and harms way.
While offering financial support to the victims is certainly a worthy cause, I believe that there are other ways that we can remember and honor them along with the city of Boston and the Boston Marathon.
We cannot let the cowards in the shadows keep us from putting on races and participating in the positive activity of running and racing at any level. The faintest light will penetrate the darkest night – and we are that light.
Keep on training for that 5K or marathon. Stand on the sidelines and cheer the runners. Volunteer at an aid station. Become a race official. Do all of these things and do not dwell on what happened at Boston, but neither forget.
I recently became an apprentice USATF official and I have volunteered to help at CIM. I felt a little better as soon as I did.
What about West Texas?
Overshadowed by the events in Boston was the explosion at the fertilizer plant in West Texas that killed 14 and injured over 200 including many first responders.
While this fire and explosion may not have been pre-meditated it may still be considered a crime. The tragic loss of life and the needs of the victims and the community remain the same in any case.
I have not been able to find a specific way to help the victims in West, but one of the best ways to help with any disaster man-made or otherwise is to contribute to the American Red Cross at https://www.redcross.org

Carlsbad 5000
The Fastest 5K in the World
Don’t believe everything you read. I have now run this course 6 times (last year I did the All Day 25K) and I guarantee this is NOT the fastest 5K course in the world. But with the world class athletes flying by you while you stand inches away in your post-race stupor, you will believe it!
Once again a bunch of us went down to Carlsbad to enjoy the semi-tropical weather (at least compared to Santa Rosa most years in March), race, eat and party like animals.
This year the contingent was smaller (think mini-van vs maxi-van) but no less enthusiastic. My race-mates included the
Sell clan – Dave, Val and the rapidly improving McKenna, as well as Larry Meredith, Bryan Porter, Gisela Malone and my sister Sandi Peterson. Others spotted included x-country fan Carlos Castelo and phenom Rylee Bowen.
Everyone had a lot of fun and I think the general consensus was that people were more or less happy with their times but the breakout performance of the weekend belonged to McKenna in the Junior Carlsbad 1 Mile event. McKenna Sell set a huge PR in running the race in 5:56 breaking the six-mile mark for the first time in what is shaping up to be a promising young career.
A special thank you to Brad Zanetti for doing most of the planning and making the hotel reservations. See you there next year buddy! We’ll do the All Day 25K and the IPA will be on me.
