Summer Semester 2013 Program: When: 8 July - 26 July, 2013 Day/time: Monday through Friday 10 a.m. -3:00 p.m. (with some exceptions) Course Goals: Upon completion of the course students should: 1. Understand the television news process as practiced in the U.S. 2. Understand the legal and ethical considerations in television news as practiced in the U.S. 3. Understand how to write for television news 4. Understand the structure of television news in the U.S. 5. Understand the basics of reporting, shooting, and editing for television news. 6. Understand the elements of pre-production and production of a television newscast. There will be a written midterm exam and a written final exam. Butler University, Creative Media & Entertainment - Summer Semester 2013 Costs: The costs for the program will be approximately US$1150 for the following: -- accommodation for three weeks in shared rooms (2 students per room) in ResCo -- linens (sheets, blankets, towels) -- course related digital supplies and books -- local transportation for visits to media production sites -- health insurance -- a two-day/one-night excursion to Chicago to visit media venues (students can elect to stay in Chicago for one or two additional nights at their own expense) Students will be responsible for their own international travel, ground transport from the Indianapolis airport to campus, all meals, and other personal expenses.

Scholarships/Loans: Students are eligible to apply for an OS Help loan (valued at $6,051) and a Short Term International Mobility scholarship (valued at $500) to offset their expenses. The application deadline is 10 April 2013 and more info is available on the Undergraduate Scholarships website (http://www.flinders.edu.au/scholarships-system/main-display-undergraduate.cfm). Visa information: Please be aware that Butler University need to have the students come on J-1 visas and will supply students with the appropriate document to apply for a visa. As a student travelling to the United States, you will need to apply for a student visa. As part of your visa application, you will be required to arrange an appointment at the United States consulate in either Melbourne or Sydney to participate in a visa interview and provide biometric data. Thursday - Friday (7/18&19)Chicago trip (Armstrong/Esterline)Two-days-and-one-night - students travel to Chicago Thursday morning and will have program-related activities Thursday afternoon and most of Friday, and then return to Indy Friday night. If students want to stay in Chicago for the weekend, then they can work out with the hotel to stay for one or two more nights and pay the hotel directly.
