MTC'sdecisionthattherep!acement BUTTERFLY-WING BRIDG E span of the Bay Bridge "must have towers"- to make it an "important" bridge - resulted in the hodgepodge F RAN K L LOY D W RIG H TAR CHI TEe T design now on the boards. A "camel" of a bridge: one-half a suspension bridge with two miles of on-ramp! If conshucted, this will be a monwuent to MTC's attempt at greatness, but a sad 150 year joke on the East Bay. And certainly not a "signature span".

MTC's "rail option" is to trade two car lanes for one rail lane - and only hght rail at that. Not satisfied, the cities of Oakland, San Francisco, Emeryville and Berkeley have spoken at the polls. They want rail to be an integral part of the bridge, not an afterthought.

what to do? There is a call for an international competition. With only one rock to support a tower, any new design can only mimic MTC's mishmash design.

There is, waiting in the wings, a simple, elegant answer, one that has no compe!:ition: Frank Lloyd Wright's Butterfly-wing Bridge. Called by some the most artful bridge designed, this bridge satisfies all the concerns, B wants, and needs for a replacement of the eastern Bay Bridge span - a bridge with skill and grace. R

Wright's design can be evaluated without missing A

a heartbeat in the schedule. Wright's associate on this bridge, architect Aaron G. Green, needs to refine Wright's design in place of the viaduct work now being done. As the enclosed drawings attest, this is truly a bridge for all reasons .

he design of Frank Lloyd Wright's Butterfly-wing Bridge meets any and all criteria for the Bay Bridge eastern span. The arches gracefully skip across from the eastern shore to Yerba Buena Island. These classic compression arches compliment the catenary suspension cables of the western span. Wright's Butterfly-wing bridge has both skill and grace.

NO COMPETITION NEEDED If a competition were to be held,

we would have the same result for a "tower" design. With only one "rock," there can only be one tower. Wright's design, with its park and integrated rail, pedestrian and cycling access, far and away exceeds any parameters an international competition could reasonably expect to have.

PUBLIC PARK The most unique feature of

Wright's design is the "public park" located at the top of the large shlpchannel arch.

This park can have a dual purpose for this site: an overlook to the East Bay, and a perfect spot for an intermodal transit station with a Treasure Island rransportaion system.

LANDMARK STATUS Lastly, it must be pointed out the

distinct advantage having a true Frank Lloyd Wright design bridge for the east bay span of the Bay Bridge: An architect with an established international reputation, using his design would afford the bridge "landmark" status (w}right from the beginning!
