Buzzin’ in the Hive Dear Graden Families: First Things First, as winter blows away our sunny and warm fall days, please remember to bundle up your little hornets with coats, hats, gloves, and scarves as needed to help them stay happy and healthy with their outdoor recesses. We do not have coats in the office for students to borrow, so help us by dressing your child appropriately for outdoor winter play. Also note, school starts each day at 8:40 am, if your child arrives after 8:40 am, you will need to come into the office and sign your child in for the day. A final reminder, ANY transportation changes need to be communicated prior to 2:00 pm each day. We appreciate you being proactive so that we can keep all our hornets safe. Hornet Pride is everywhere: Our school community will be viewing the movie Wonder, on Saturday, Dec. 2nd, what a great way to celebrate kindness; Our 4H’s Club packed Homeless Care Kits to deliver throughout the community, and they also sent packages of candy to soldiers for Operation Gratitude; Our Girls on the Run Club collected 150 pairs of shoes for Soles4Souls; and Our 5 th grade Choir will be singing at the Maverick’s game, Crown Center and in Parkville to kick-off the holiday season at Christmas on the River. It certainly is going to be a very busy month at 9 and 45. Thanks to these motivated ladies and gentlemen for Sharpening Their Saw and leading by example throughout Parkville and the Kansas City area. It is wonderful to see our students participating in these service projects; their passion, dedication and leadership is truly amazing! A formal thank you to our wonderful PTA for all they do to enhance the work we do at Graden Elementary. They continue to fund our Early Release Interest Groups, which is a monthly highlight for our students. They host multiple events that bring us together as a school community, and they work tirelessly to create strong home-school partnerships. As the first semester of the 2017-2018 academic year comes to a close, we want to thank you for your commitment and support. In every part of your child’s experience, we appreciate and depend upon your help. We are particularly fortunate at Graden that the school/ home partnership is so very strong. Dear Graden Families: First Things First, as winter blows away our sunny and warm fall days, please remember to bundle up your little hornets with coats, hats, gloves, and scarves as needed to help them stay happy and healthy with their outdoor recesses. Hornet Pride is everywhere:

Our school community will be viewing the movie Wonder, on Saturday, Dec. 2nd, what a great way to celebrate kindness;

Our 4H’s Club packed Homeless Care Kits to deliver throughout the community, and they also sent packages of candy to soldiers for Operation Gratitude;

Our 5th grade Choir will be singing at the Maverick’s game, Crown Center and in Parkville to kick-off the holiday season at Christmas on the River.

Leadership Day

On November 10, Graden welcomed guests from numerous schools to showcase the Leader in Me Program. Students lead the assembly, gave tours of the school, presented on bulletin board topics in the hallways, and exhibited great leadership in their classrooms. Everyone should be very proud of how well they represented

themselves, and Graden!

Way to go, hornets!

All students in physical education class will be focusing on movement and muscles. Students will be learning the muscles in their body and they will be learning how the specific muscles are being used and how to strengthen those muscles through physical activity. Grades 3rd-5th will be starting sports skills and will be working on a variety of sports spe-cific lead up games while following the rules and cooperat-ing with others. Just a reminder that it is extremely impor-tant that students come dressed appropriately for physical activity. Tennis shoes with laces and appropriate gym clothes are required for participation and for safety.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR Parents, thank you so much for your support during our recent Scholastic Book Fair. Because of the generosity of our parents, students and staff, this book fair was once again a huge success!! I would also would like to thank our volunteers—your generous gift of time supporting our students contributed to the success of this fair. The book fair cash profit of $1600 will continue to support the needs of our library such as additional technology purchases, new books for our collections, or possible author visits or skypes. The fair also allowed our teachers to receive a $5.00 book for your child’s classroom, as well as providing Ms. Koyn’s class $25.00 worth of books for her classroom. The library also received through Scholastic Dollars new incentive books for those students participating in our reading programs and library trivia. VETERANS DAY In celebration of Veterans Day, veterans as well as soldiers from Fort Leavenworth were invited to our school on Friday, November 10. Our

visitors greeted our students at the buses, car lines and breakfast, and participated in our morning announcements as well as leading the pledge at our Leadership Day event. They then

made visits to our second, third and fifth grade classrooms answering student questions sharing their thoughts and time with our school. This was a great experience for all of us—a wonderful tradition for our school.

MUSIC NEWS The Fourth Grade Musical was a rousing patriotic event!

Sonic’s High Five Club November Recognition

Reinforcing personal development and leadership - that is what Sonic's "High Five" Club is all about. The High Five Program was introduced in December 2012 to recognize personal devel-opment and leadership. Students who are selected each month will receive a certificate which they can redeem at the 63rd Street Sonic location in Parkville, Missouri. A "High Five" hand-

print with the child's name will be displayed on the wall inside Graden Elementary. At the end of each month, the High Five Hands are taken down and replaced with the High Five hands honoring students for the next month. The hands are then put up on a special bulletin board at Graden Elementary and remain up until the end of the school year.

Please join us in congratulating all of the members of the Sonic High Five Club! Great job students!

So, What’s the Buzz on … Graden Giving Back?

E-Club is a new 4th grade club at Graden focused on protecting the environment. The students came up with the idea, developed the mission statement, and presented the idea to Dr. Halverstadt. These kids really put the 8 Habits into practice. The E-Club, with sponsors Dr. Halverstadt and Ms. Whitt, cleaned up English Landing Park on November 1. What a fantastic group of leaders!

Graden 4-Hs are Helping Hornets Live the Habits Outside of the Hive. Mrs. Garcia is the club sponsor. The 4Hs participated and cheered at the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk on October 28. And in November, the 4Hs made homeless care kits using donated items from our Kindergarten classes. They were able to create over 50 kits to be distributed to men and women in our community. What caring kids!

E-Club Mission Statement

The E-club is here to make

our world

a cleaner place to live.

We will meet our goal by

synergizing to promote and

protect our environment.

GOOOOO E-CLUB!!!!

JOIN GRADEN PTA’s SCRIP PROGRAM

What is Scrip Fundraising?

Scrip is fundraising while you shop®! You buy gift cards for over 780 retailer brands you already shop at and earn a

rebate on every gift card you purchase at face value. That rebate goes right to our organization.

How it Works

We run our scrip program through ShopWithScrip.com, which has worked with over 30,000 nonprofit organizations over

the course of 23 years. You will need to sign up and create an account to order online.

Creating an Account

You register online by going to www.ShopWithScrip.com and clicking Join a Program. You will need to enter our

enrollment code which will link your account to our organization. Once you have entered the enrollment code click

Register. You will answer two challenge questions and provide answers. Then you will be ready to order online and earn!

Graden PTA Enrollment Code: C269B48434551

Potential Earnings with Scrip

For your first order, you might just purchase scrip for your gas and groceries. Once you get used to it, though, you can

earn on every section of your budget, including: dining out, entertainment, home improvement, and online shopping!

When Can I Order?

You can order any time, especially if you order ScripNow ecards that can be accessed immediately. However, orders for

physical gift cards have a minimum $8.50 shipping cost so an order (or combination of orders) also must earn a

minimum $8.50 rebate amount to make it a win-win.
