ECO-Tip: Its Good to be High-Maintenance.

If youre sitting idle in your car for more than 3minutes, its best to turn it off. Remaining idle usesmore gasoline than restarting the engine again. Keepyour tires inflated properly to improve gas mileage bymore than 3% and conserve fuel. Change your airfilter. Change your oil. Get quality service on yourvehicle to keep it in good shape and as eco-friendly aspossible.

COST BENEFIT: Adequately inflated tires can notonly save 250 pounds of carbon dioxide, but also $840per year on gasoline. Having a clean air filter in your

vehicle can save the atmosphere 800 pounds of carbondioxide and you $130 a year.BARE FACTS & STATS: Every gallon of gasoline

saved keeps 20 pounds of carbon dioxide out of theatmosphere. From becomegreen.info, brought to you by Half Price Books

    EARL COLLINS FOUNDATION

    Principal Coordinator: Dr. Myral

    Coatney (BVK Club support $50)

The Earl Collins Foundation of the Missouri-Arkansas Kiwanis District of Kiwanis International

was originally the Earl A.Collins MemorialScholarship Fund. Establishment of the scholarshipfund was approved during the 1960 Missouri-Arkansas District Convention in Saint Joseph,Missouri, to perpetuate the memory of Dr. Earl A.Collins, an educator, Past Governor and Secretary ofthe Missouri-Arkansas Kiwanis District. Dr. Collinsbegan his career in education as a teacher and laterserved as an administrator. He was on the faculty ofCentral Missouri State College for 15 years and

then was on the faculty of SoutheastMissouri State College for an additional20 years. Earl was well known through his authorshipof many school textbooks and his research into andwriting on the history of Missouri and its peoples. Oneof his best known books was Legends and Lore ofMissouri. As a Kiwanian, Earl was a charter member of the CapeGirardeau Kiwanis Club and served as Missouri-

Arkansas Governor in 1952. During his adminis-tration, the decision was made to have the first Mid-Winter Conference in Springfield, Missouri, inFebruary of 1953. The Mid-Year Conference, as itis presently known, is a vital part of the Missouri-Arkansas Districts annual activities. Dr. Collins wasthe first salaried district secretary and KIWANIGRAMeditor, serving in this position from 1956 until hisdeath in 1960.

When the scholarship fund was established soon afterhis death, it was suggested that each Kiwanis Club in

the District contribute $1.00 per member to the fundwith the interest to be given to deserving studentsattending Southeast Missouri State College. Therecipients of the scholarships may now attend thecollege or university of their choice. Beginning in the2002-2003 academic year the scholarships wereincreased from $500 to $750.00, with 23 scholarshipsbeing awarded to high school seniors from theMissouri-Arkansas Kiwanis District.

Currently, each Kiwanis Club contributing $2.00 permember receives a banner patch to signify the clubscontribution and desire to make an investment in theleaders of tomorrow. Individuals are also encouragedto make contributions to the fund as a tribute ormemorial to honor Kiwanians, friends, family, orassociates of Kiwanians. In 1985 BVK's own Dr.Myral Coatney helped to establish a Charter Memberdesignation to recognize individuals or clubs thatmade contributions of at least $1,000. The FellowProgram, as it is now called recognizes clubs orindividuals that contributes at least $250.00 per yearover a maximum period of four years. Also, a lumpsum contribution of $1,000.00 will qualify for thecurrent Fellow program.

The current goal of the Foundation is to increase thetotal endowment to at least $500,000. At that time, itis hoped that additional funding can be given to theMO-ARK Circle K and Key Club organizations. Toachieve this goal, Foundation Officers and Trustees areencouraging Kiwanis Clubs and individuals to qualifyfor the "Fellow Award."
