World Oceans Day[…]Seventy per cent of our planet is covered by one huge, continuous body of seawater – the ocean. It holds 1.35 billion cubic kilometres of water. Nearly half of the ocean is more than 3 kilometres deep. The deepest known point of the ocean is in the Mariana Trench, 11 kilometres below sea level. But there may be deeper points that we have not seen, as we have only explored five per cent of the ocean to date.[…]The government of Canada suggested the idea of World Oceans Day at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. In 2008 the United Nations officially recognised the date and it has been growing ever since, from 100 events in 2008 to over a thousand events in more than 120 countries ten years later. The day is celebrated in a variety of ways, including special events at aquari-ums and zoos, beach and river clean-ups, school activities, conservation programmes, art contests and film festivals.[…]One of the main aims of the day is to remind people of the important role the ocean plays in our lives. Life began in the ocean. And the ocean is home to the majority of plants and animals on Earth, from single-cell organisms to the blue whale. Marine plants provide us with 70 per cent of the oxygen we breathe. The ocean controls the climate, providing heat in winter and cool air in summer. It also provides us with food and medicines as well as transport. No matter where you live on the planet, no matter how far from the sea, your life is dependent on the ocean.[…]The most urgent problem facing the ocean at the moment is plastic pollution. Reducing one-use plastic, including plastic bags and plastic bottles, has been an important theme for World Oceans Day for a number of years. Climate change and rising sea temperatures are also a huge problem. Rising sea temperatures have a direct influence on weather patterns and are seen as partly responsible for an increase in extreme weather conditions. An increase in carbon dioxide is increasing the acid levels of seawater and putting many marine organisms at risk. […]On World Oceans Day, wear blue, go on a march, find a beach or river clean-up near you, organise a local event, print a poster and put it in your window, or use the hashtag #worldoceansday on social media. There are so many things you can do on 8 June to join in the celebrations, to remind people about the importance of the ocean in our lives and to make a difference!Quelle: British Council, https://learnenglish.britishcouncil.org/magazine/world-oceans-day, 02.09.2019

C – Use of Language

Part 1

Read the text and find the correct missing word. Write down the correct word.

How does plastic end up in the ocean?Even if you live hundreds of miles from the coast, the plastic you ➊ away could make its way into the sea.

Once in the ocean, plastic decomposes very ➋, breaking down into tiny pieces known as micro plastics that

can be incredibly damaging to sea life. […]

Many of the products we use daily ➌ flushed down toilets, including wet wipes, cotton buds and sanitary

products. Microfibres are even released ➍ waterways when we wash our clothes in the washing machine.

They are ➎ small to be filtered out by waste water plants and end up being consumed by small marine spe-

cies, eventually even ending up in our food chain.

A positive move in recent months was a ban on microbeads in rinse-off cosmetic and cleaning products ➏ by the UK Government, so that these small plastic beads will no longer get washed down the sink and out

into our oceans […]

a) What are they going to do? Chris: Lizzie, do you want to go to the mall and do some shopping? Lizzie: I’d love to, but my pocket money is nearly gone for the month. Chris: Shame. But we could still go and just window-shop. Lizzie: Nah, that’s so frustrating. But we could go have ice-cream. Chris: Let’s do that then, and if you don’t have enough money, I can lend you some.

b) Which pet are they going to get? Megan: Mom, can I get a cat? Mother: Megan, we have talked about this so many times. You can have something smaller, but not a cat. Megan: Hmm, a hamster then? Mother: Why not, although they’re only active during the night. What about a rabbit? Megan: Oh yes, that would be awesome. Can we go look at some in the pet shop today?

c) What is she doing as a summer job? Luke: Hi, Adrianne. So did you get the summer job that you applied for? Adrianne: Hey Luke, no, unfortunately I didn’t. I would have loved to work as an assistant in the pet shop, but they

chose someone else. Luke: I’m sorry to hear that. Do you have something else then? Adrianne: Yes, actually. There were two other jobs I applied for. One to deliver newspapers and the other in a little

shop, to stock shelves and such. Luke: And? Adrianne: Well, I would have liked the shop more but in the end I chose the delivery job because it pays better

and I can choose my own hours.

d) When must they hand in their homework? Carl: Mabel, do you know if Mrs Taylor wanted the homework today or tomorrow? Mabel: Today, as far as I remember. Carl: Strange, I thought it was tomorrow, but Philip said today as well. Mabel: Oh of course, right, now I remember, she’s not even in today. Ha, that means I finally have something

ready before I actually need it.

e) Which chores does Mia have? Mia: Man, my mom really gets on my nerves with all the chores I’m supposed to do. Harry: Really? What do you have to do? Mia: Apart from cleaning my room, I have to put the rubbish out and now she wants me to vacuum the apartment

every Saturday as well. Harry: That sounds almost exactly like my chores. Although I have to load and empty the dishwasher, too. Mia: I really hate doing chores. I mean why can I not decide myself, if I want to clean my room or not? Harry: Yeah, you’re right! After all, we don’t tell our parents when to tidy up either. Mia: Exactly!

Announcement of a teacherEveryone, listen up, please. This is an announcement about our outing to the adventure park next week Tuesday. The cost for the whole trip is £15 and you need to have paid by Monday at the very latest. We will leave here by bus at 8 o’clock sharp, so you should be at the car park around 15 minutes earlier. For lunch please bring your own food, because, as you know, the food in those parks is rather expensive. There are all kinds of attractions in the park and you will have to walk around in groups of at least four, no wandering off by yourselves. We will be back by 4 o’clock in the afternoon, please ask your parents to be on time. Now, any questions?

song? Do you know if it is someone well-known or more independent?Ben: It’s definitely not something current, more like something from the seventies or maybe early eighties.Salesperson: Ah, that already helps. Then we can leave this section here and can go on to the back where we have

records from that time. Now, is it a woman or a man or a group?Ben: I think it’s a group and they were quite famous back then. The song he really loves has something to do

with a wall.Salesperson: Oh, do you mean Pink Floyd? And their song “Another brick in the wall”? If you do, then you’re right, they

were successful. Just that song alone sold over 4 million times.Ben: Hmm, I think that was it. Could I listen to it, just to be absolutely sure?Salesperson: Certainly, come on through to the front again, there we have our stereo equipment and headphones.
