LUNGS By Duncan Macmillan JULY 1–12 “I don’t know what you want. I need you to give me some clues,” says the young man to the young woman in Lungs. It’s a bristling dynamic love story, that encapsulates the paradoxes of modern masculinity and empowered femininity, in brilliant scenes that quick cut, leap forward in time, change locations instantly and range from comic, to tender, to enraged. It asks the question “How can we be good in a privileged society?” Revived last year for a sold-out run at the Old Vic starring Claire Foy and Matt Smith (from The Crown), this Best New Play award-winning piece presents a perfectly imperfect couple in an uncertain world, grappling with what should be a simple question: whether or not to have a child. Lungs is a stripped-down look at the expectations we put on ourselves and those we love, and how we strive to find hope in a world that can seem out of control. “Duncan Macmillan’s distinctive, off-kilter love story is brutally honest, funny, edgy and current.” –The Guardian SUMMER SEASON THE MOUSETRAP By Agatha Christie JULY 15–26 An impassable blizzard strands seven strangers in a country inn. A police inspector arrives on skis to inform them they have a murderer in their midst. In her inimitable style, Dame Agatha Christie creates an atmosphere of shuddering suspense and black comedy. Her classic “whodunit”, the world’s longest continuously running play, has kept West End audiences laughing and guessing for six decades. The Mousetrap will delight and intrigue Peterborough’s mystery lovers of all ages. INTO THE WOODS Book by James Lapine, Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim JULY 29–AUGUST 9 “Anything can happen in the woods….” Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods is a dazzling, sophisticated mash-up of the world’s most popular fairy tales. The original Broadway production garnered the Drama Desk, a Grammy Award, and multiple Tony Awards. Cinderella, Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and his Beanstalk, and of course (long before Wicked ) a fabulous Witch, combine forces to fend off a pair of powerful and angry Giants. Sondheim’s witty, ravishing score and James Lapine’s moving and darkly humorous book combine to make Into The Woods a favorite among musical lovers and a timeless masterpiece. Sharp, funny, and full of gorgeous songs, like the now-classic “ Children Will Listen,” Into the Woods reminds us that no matter how joyful, frightening, or challenging the road to our dreams may be – no one is alone. The Players’ production performed in our historic barn offers an adventure in the woods unlike any other. GETTING MARRIED By George Bernard ShawAUGUST 12–23In this humorous and thought-provoking play, Shaw turns marriage inside out and upside-down, looking at the institution from every conceivable angle. He spins the subject of marriage and divorce into comedy gold with quick fire dialogue and astute observations in a progressive minded battle-of-the-sexes. The wedding day of an Anglican bishop’s young daughter brings the bishop’s extended family to London for a comic feast – or perhaps a “roast” – of the institution of Matrimony. Originally written for the stage in 1908, its conflicts remain current regarding marriage, its purpose and sanctity. Getting Married is an ingenious Shavian roller coaster of storytelling.

“One of the breeziest...of Shaw plays, full of fun characters and amusing chatter... The comedy doesn’t pretend to be more than what it is – and so doesn’t ever let you down.” – Globe and Mail

BEN BUTLER By Richard StrandAUGUST 26–SEPTEMBER 6What if what’s right is not legal? General Ben Butler, a lawyer who finds himself commander of union troops during the Civil War, knows the law states that escaped slaves must be returned to their owners. But an escaped slave – an extremely singular individual, one Shepard Mallory – arrives at Fort Monroe seeking sanctuary, and makes a powerful case for himself. Butler must reconcile a moral dilemma: maintain the letter of the law, or do what’s right for those looking for justice – while possibly upending the course of history. This clever, funny, beautifully crafted play based on true occurrences is a battle of wits for the soul of a nation, and defies simple characterization – part comedy, part historical drama, part biography, and often all at the same time!

“Just call it splendid…The beauty of the script is how it approaches thorny topics. In short, it’s a hoot... [Strand’s] comic voice is…clever without being glib, meaningful without being pretentious. It’s a funny and impressive mixture.” – The New York Times

THE THINGS THEY CARRIED Adaptation by Jim Stowell, Based on the book by Tim O’BrienSEPTEMBER 9–13Based on the literary classic, The Things They Carried is the powerful telling of Tim O’Brien’s personal journey from his innocent years in rural Minnesota to the jungles of Vietnam. In this one-person, multi-character tour-de-force, the lines between truth and reality as fact and fiction are explored and blur in this unforgettable soldier’s journey.

SECOND COMPANYTHE FROG PRINCESS Book by Joseph McDonough, Music and Lyrics by David KisorJUNE 20–JULY 18When Ivan’s father decrees that it is time for his sons to marry, Ivan is unhappy to discover that his bride turns out to be a frog named Vasilisa. But Vasilisa is really a princess under the curse of evil “Old Bones”, who eventually takes the princess to a far-off land. To rescue her, Ivan must face many trials and travel around the world, using bravery and kindness to guide him along the way. Set to a rousing, modern score, this classic Russian fairytale is given a fun modern musical spin and will delight the young – and the young at heart!

PETER/WENDY By Jeremy BloomAUGUST 17–22A lyrical, atmospheric interpretation of Peter Pan. Jeremy Bloom strips the familiar story down to its emotional essence. Peter lures Wendy away from her nursery to the magical world of Neverland, where she joins his adventures with Tinker Bell, Tiger Lily, and the menacing Captain Hook. An inventive adaptation that pays homage to the deeper themes of Barrie’s original, Peter/Wendy will mesmerize audience of all ages.
