On April 27, 2014 the North Jersey Cadillac Club, now a full- fledged region of the CLC held their annual

spring meet. As they say in real estate: Location, location, location. The views don’t get better than

Alpine’s Lookout Point just off the Palisades Interstate Parkway in North Jersey. A sharp cliff on the

New Jersey side of the Hudson River allows a breath-taking panorama of the Hudson River Valley.

April 27th was a bit cold, but clear and that allowed many photo ops of some really stellar Cadillacs.

Aside from the wonderful cars and great scenery there was a smattering of RRR members and their

cars joining the festivities. Coupled with the camaraderie shown by our friends up north, a wonderful

time was had by all.

For your viewing pleasure, here a few snapshots of the occasion. This is one of a continuing series of

articles of RRR members, and their lives outside of our club. If you’ve been to an interesting event, or

if you or your car has been awarded special merit, send me a note and we’ll let your fellow region mem-

bers know.

neighborhood car show? Friends From Piscataway

Dave Carney, Our gracious host The Monica Family

Tony Albarella, as Editor of the CCNJ’s newsletter Tony will document this event for his newsletter.

Mike Cascio, Continues to improve his car. Look-

ing good, Mike

John Mandalakis’ 1985 Seville. Real nice!

Bernie Cooney’s 1985 Sevile, Not shabby either!

Having traveled only about 34K miles, this car is in fine condition. It is equipped with the Landau option which provides the

small rear window and special roof treatment. An Ohio car, this limo was delivered new to Mildred Rodway, of Cleveland, Ohio

on 3/11/64 as documented from the original owner’s manual which accompanies the car. Other caretakers for this limo include

Thomas Lester, owner of Lester Tires, a

company specializing in classic car tires

since 1966. Our best wishes to Al for

many, many miles of Happy Motoring!

Region member Jordan Bernstein has relocated to sunny Florida and

while we were shivering and shoveling this past February his 1961

Cadillac Fleetwood Presidential Limousine won a 3rd Junior trophy at

the winter AACA meet in Port St. Lucie, Florida. Not one to take it

easy, Jordan is working diligently to finish his ‘57 Brougham in time

for the 2015 Boca Raton and Amelia Island Concours events.

He also wanted to share his charity’s Facebook page with all of his friends here at the RRR. You can

view it at: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Martin-County-Special-Needs-Training/1421140668128097

We extend our best wishes to Jordan as he enjoys the Florida sun!

That on June 18th, 1923 the very first Checker Cab rolled off the assembly line?

Checker Motors Corporation was owned by Morris Markin and was the culmination of a number of business deals and buy-outs by Markin which actually began in 1910. Competition for fares was fierce in the 1920s, the fighting between the cab companies escalated to the point where Markin's home was firebombed, which prompted Markin to relocate Checker Taxi to Kalamazoo, Michigan. To his credit Checker became the first cab company to hire African-American drivers and the first to require

that drivers pick up all fares. Another interesting fact is that during the depression Markin sold the company to E.L. Cord but bought it back in 1936. The final Marathon was manu-factured in 1982, when Checker exited the automobile manufacturing business. The com-pany continued operation at partial capacity making Cadillac parts for General Motors until January 2009 when it declared bankruptcy.

The first-1923 & last-1982 Checker cabs.

RARITAN RIVER REGION-CLC-Meeting Minutes- May 15, 2014

Director Jeff Montgomery called the meeting to order at 7:35 PM at which time the Pledge of Allegiance was re-cited. There were 16 members present including 7 Board Members. Secretary - The April Secretary's report as noted in the April issue of the Caddy Corner was approved by the at-tending members, Webmaster - Jeff Montgomery advised the web site is down but should be up and running after he and Peter Gariepy have a discussion, Treasurer - Joe Puleo gave us his report which was accepted by the attending members. Editors Report - Caddy Corner-Ray advises we need Member stories. He would love to have a lead story for the June issue. Membership Report - Ray advises our renewal program is underway. To date, 37 members have returned their renewal dues and offers his thanks to those who have already made their payment. Total membership stands at 115. OLD BUSINESS: Joe Manna advises that it is possible that ROYAL CADILLAC has been sold. He is not sure to whom and if it is even a Cadillac dealer. As this puts our June 28th show in jeopardy, he advised he will touch base with Royal on Friday, May 16 for an update. It was the general feeling with the members that the show would not take place and as no checks have been deposited, they would be returned to those who had already pre registered. Calls will have to be made to the 2 Broke Broads and the DJ. Jeff Montgomery advised that Rosemary has stepped down as our car show Registrar. Isabel Lehnhoff has been kind enough to take over the job from Rosemary who has done an outstanding job ever since undertaking this task. Jeff met with both of them earlier this week to discuss the transition. CROWN CADILLAC - Jeff Genovese and Jeff Montgomery discussed this year’s car show along with Mike Casio from North Jersey Cadillac for a joint event. The date most suitable is Saturday July 19th which the attending members approved. In further discussion, an August date may be better due to the many other car events hap-pening in July. Jeff Genovese said he would provide space for 50 cars, food and drink along with trophy's. As in the past, this would be a pre- registration dealer choice- Cadillac Show only. GOLD COAST - Chair-Doug Lansing said all is going well. Jeff Montgomery suggested the committee have a meeting with Keith Harvey in August to tie up any loose ends. A heated discussion ensued when Bernie Cooney commented on his displeasure on the way the judging forms are handled causing several cars at the previous show to miss being judged even though the DJ made an an-nouncement to all that the judging had ended and if anyone did not have their car judged to tell someone! It was agreed that if extra help was available at the registration table, once the car had been checked in, the judg-ing form would be handed over to the head judge (Bernie) for processing. Several judges agreed to help at the registration table. NEW BUSINESS: Ted Mandalakas discussed the Fire Extinguisher Bag, 300 have been ordered with the new logo and one will be given to Bob Crimmins to present to the CLC Board Of Directors at the upcoming Grand National for approval to offer them to the club. Several sell prices were discussed but none has been firmed up yet.

Joe Manna is still looking into RRR Grill Badges and will report further at the next meeting.

John Q. discussed the upcoming Garwood Show on June 8th, and Bernie Cooney discussed the upcoming 4th. of July show in Piscataway.

Greg Rosser, Joe Manna and John Q. advised the Cadillac Nite show at Galloping Hill will be sometime in August-date to be determined.

Bernie advised the date for the Somerville show is Friday, July 18th

Minutes continued on Page -7-

May 15th Meeting Minutes Continued From Page -6- Jeff Montgomery advised that he would prepare a list of people who were going to this year’s Grand National in Lake George (Week of July 7th.). Nick Medici made the suggestion in case some wanted to caravan. FOR SALE WANTED: Jeff has a lead on a 1986 SDV (small body style) 56K miles-gold-decent shape-$1,000.00 OBO. There being no further business to attend to, the meeting was adjourned at 8:20 PM followed by club provided coffee and donuts. The next regularly scheduled meeting will be held on Thursday June 19, 2014 at 7:30 PM. Respectfully submitted, Bob Crimmins Secretary

OLDIES OLDIES

OLDIES OLDIES

Our cupboard is bare, we have no more member stories inventoried for Caddy Corner. In order to

keep this publication interesting we need your help with some member stories.

Your story should be car related, and could be a personal story about one of your classic cars, such

as how you found it, or your first classic car, or the article can cover any other car-related topic.

So now it’s your turn, so get the pen and paper out and start writing. Please submit all

articles to [email protected] or mail them to RRR, POB 34, Martinsville, NJ 08836.

Thanks, Ray

I am both pleased and honored to advise that our newsletter, Caddy Corner has been awarded a

Golden Quill Award from Old Cars Weekly.

This will be the second Golden Quill Award that we have received and each could not have been

earned without the help of your membership stories which keep the newsletter both interesting and

informative. My sincere thanks to all of our contributors and I look forward to seeing an ever widen-

ing group of contributing members submitting stories. Let’s all try for a 3rd Golden Quill next year!

As of June 1st we have a total of 52 member renewals received. This represents a 46% reten-

tion ratio thus far. Our current membership stands at 115 members through June 30th. As of

July 1st only those who have renewed will be counted as region members, so it is imperative

that your renewal payment be received well prior to June 30th. On or about July 1st I will advise

those who have not yet renewed that their membership has expired. Expired members will be

removed from our mailing lists and no longer receive region communications, including our

newsletter.

The renewal process is an arduous task and I ask for your cooperation in making your renewal

payment early.

My thanks for your cooperation.

Ray Koziol, Membership Chairman
