ReUse adds value and limits use of natural resources:

While manufacturing new products drains our limited natural resources, and disposing of unwanted materials pollutes our environment, our communities face difficulties getting the affordable goods they need.

Reusing an item means that it continues to be a valuable, useful, productive item, and replaces new items that would utilize more water, energy, timber, petroleum, and other limited natural resources in their manufacture.

Businesses can save significant dollars in disposal by reselling or donating items that are no longer needed.

Many chemicals and solvents that are no longer useful to one organization can be used in other applications by other organizations. This method of "materials exchange" results in disposal savings by the generating company, and saving in the purchase of the material by the recipient organization.

Benefits of Textile Recovery:

Contributes to charities and serves as a mechanism to fund charitable work-providing clothing for the needy to funding job skills training programs

Provides potential deductions on income taxes through donation

Provides needed items for disaster relief

Helps communities reduce their carbon footprint

Provides local economic development opportunity through resale outlets

Projected Beneficial Outcome

Statistics of Textiles:

The United States Environmental Protection Agency estimates that 13.1 million tons of textiles were generated in 2010 or 5.3% of our country's total municipal solid waste (MSW) generation

Approximately 14% of clothing and footwear and 17.1% of items such as sheets and pillowcases were recovered for export or reprocessing in 2010

In 2010, 15% of all used textiles were recovered - some 2 million tons

Projected Beneficial Outcome

Marketing Ideas by Retailers:

Many well-known companies like GAP and Levis as well as organizations such as Patagonia are all great examples of brands that are leading the way in the green initiative

These companies are providing sewn-in labels out of reuse and recycled materials. They also use this recycled materials on tags that relay information of recycling instructions and in-store receptacles to recycle used clothing and footwear

These companies and organizations are making a point to introduce donation and recycling initiatives of the apparel and footwear they sell to promote their green initiatives

Projected Beneficial Outcome
