God’s Generosity
Some of Jesus’ most powerful and challenging parables describe God’s generosity. This
generosity is sometimes beyond what we think is fair. On September 21st, we had for our
Sunday gospel the parable of the workers in the vineyard. This is the story where the owner of
the vineyard hired workers, some at the start of the day and others throughout the day, up to an
hour before the end of the workday. The owner paid them all the same daily wage, and those
who worked all day were upset. In response to these disgruntled workers, the owner said, “Are
you envious because I am generous?” This is the way of God’s kingdom, according to Jesus.
God’s kingdom is one of generosity, especially for the latecomers. In some sense, we are all
latecomers who can’t earn our way into God’s kingdom, but God invites us in anyway. As I said
in my sermon, the good news is that we don’t get what we deserve!
October is the month when we often focus on financial stewardship. On Sunday October
12 , we will have one service at 10 a.m. followed by a potluck lunch. This is the kickoff for ourth
annual pledge drive for the ministries of St. George’s. The foundation for any discussion about
stewardship is God’s generosity. Because God’s love flows to us beyond what we can ask or
imagine, we can live generously. I like to think of God’s love as a current of water which flows
around us and carries us along. Being generous is just letting God’s love carry us along.
Living generously impacts all of our lives. It means being generous in our use of time for
others, in offering our abilities for God’s service, in caring for people both within the parish and
in the larger community, and in giving our money and possessions for God’s work. As a Total
Ministry congregation, we encourage everyone to do ministry according to our baptismal calling;
all are called to serve! I have experienced St. George’s as a very caring, generous parish.
Focused on God’s generosity in Jesus, may we continue to live in generous love.
In Jesus’ love,
Father Ray
Thoughts From Our PIC (Priest in Charge)
1
Our Senior WardenOctober is here, and it is pledge month at St. George’s. Most of you know the drill: We
are going to ask you to prayerfully consider a reasonable amount for you to give to your church.
We need to know this information now because our treasurer will be developing a budget for the
upcoming calendar year, and it will need to be approved at our annual meeting the Sunday
before Super Bowl. We like to get our pledge information in by the end of November, so we can
look at a preliminary budget at our December vestry meeting, and approve a close to final one at
the January vestry meeting.
I can hear you all thinking, “Whoa! She is really being blunt! What happened to the talk
about how much good our money will do for the church? What happened to the lecture about
tithing and what it means?” Everything I said in the first paragraph is information I have
received and have transmitted in the past during pledge season as senior warden, or pledge drive
chair. It is one side of the pledge propaganda (whoops, I mean publicity) that I suspect every
church throws out during the season.
But let me share with you my faith story, and why I pledge. I first attended St. George in
1987, and began attending regularly in 1988. I discovered a family that I never knew existed.
Yes, I had my own biological family, and lots of friends, but when I go to church on Sunday, or
choir practice, or vestry meetings, or worship committee, or run into a church member at the
supermarket, I see and meet family. This family is really why I continue to attend St. George,
and continue to pledge.
And then there are the ministries I see that this church. St. George’s Episcopal Church has. We
contribute to Heifer Project, and food banks, as well as other organizations. We have a
community garden for the benefit of the community, not just church members. We have reached
out to veterans and the homeless. But to me the most meaningful ministry is the generous
support our members give to each other, such as caring for each other after surgery, is or when
someone is sick.
This year I will fill out a pledge card and contribute monthly to my church. I do so
because it is my family, and like any family it needs financial support. I urge all of you to also
do this.Becky Freie, Sr. Warden

WOMAN’S GUILD
At our September meeting, the Sunshine Chairwoman reported she is
continuing to mail appreciation/thank you notes to various members of the
congregation. These notes have been well received, especially since they were
completely unexpected by the individuals who are just doing what they do around
the church. Get Well cards have also been mailed to convalescing members. Please
let us know [by notifying the church office] if any member of the congregation
could benefit from receiving a ‘Cheerful’ note or one of Sympathy.
Our used book corner continues to do well. So far this year, $80 has been collected.
If you have not perused the shelves in the corner recently, you should. You will
find a large selection of fiction, non-fiction, historical, and humorous books. Take a
look. It is hard to beat the price of $1 for hard-back or 50¢ for paper-back books. If
your home book collection needs thinning, our shelves will be happy to receive your
surplus. Also, have your looked at the Tract Rack on the opposite side of the
church? There are a variety of religious pamphlets that may be of interest to you.
One example: The “Forward Day by Day” provides three months of commentary on
the daily Bible readings. Free will contributions can be placed in the slot on the
Rack.
Our next meeting will be Wednesday, October 15, at 11:00 am in the parish
hall. Bring a bag lunch and join us for the meeting to discuss upcoming activities
and for a bit of socializing. Beverages and dessert will be provided.
Carol Adkins, President

Each Sunday we pray for forgiveness of the things we’ve done and left undone. This
theme kept running through my mind as Sandy and I drove home from visiting her cousins in
Canada. Driving 400-500 miles a day, you have a lot of time to think. Rather than search for
radio stations we listen to Sandy’s iPod, mostly blues and country music where the theme of
regrets seems to come up a lot, so that may have also got me thinking about this business of
things left undone.
Actually our trip was a way of not leaving something undone. Sandy’s cousins are all in
their 80’s, so we got to thinking that our “plan” to visit them again in two years might be too
late. While it was a quick trip, at least for the amount of time we had to visit family, we did
connect with more of the second and third cousins (or cousins twice removed or some such).
I’m thinking this things undone is sort of like New Year’s or the Boy Scout motto, “do a
good turn daily”, but like resolutions and doing good deeds, somehow life gets in the way and at
the end of the day did we do what we wanted? Did we love our neighbor as ourselves, or did we
go stumbling on our way?
At the end of the day I’ve got a pretty good idea of the things I need forgiveness for
doing. The problem I have with things left undone is I will occasionally know of a specific thing
or action I wish I had done, much more often I don’t even recognize the thing or things I should
have done this day? My first thought about all of this was that I didn’t have a clue of what to do
about it. But then the obvious answer struck me – pray. Remembering Paul’s admonition,
always be joyful, pray and in everything give thanks. Amen,
_Deacon Bob
