GREEN BUILDING AND DESIGN PRACTICES By: Henry, Flynn, and Kyle

Green building:Refers to a structure and using process that is environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a building's life-cycle: from siting to design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation, and demolition. This practice expands and complements the classical building design concerns of economy, utility, durability, and comfort.

Green buildings are designed to reduce the overall impact of the built environment on human health and the natural environment by:-Efficiently using energy, water, and other resources -Protecting occupant health and improving employee productivity -Reducing waste, pollution and environmental degradation

+ For example, green buildings may incorporate sustainable materials in their construction (e.g., reused, recycled-content, or made from renewable resources); create healthy indoor environments with minimal pollutants (e.g., reduced product emissions); and/or feature landscaping that reduces water usage (e.g., by using native plants that survive without extra watering).

ECO-CAMP PATAGONIATORRES DEL PAINE NATIONAL PARK, CHILE

SITE SELECTION

+ Located outside Torres del Paine National Park so that materials from the site can be used in construction, and remediation

+ Site chosen because it is on the path of the ancient Kawesquar nomads

DESIGN PRINCIPLES

+ Inspired by kawesqar huts and camp layout+ Designed for wind resistance and strength+ Dome maximizes internal space while

minimizing external surface area

+ Interferes with environment as little as possible+ Portable like nomadic Kawesqar camps+ Designed to immerse guests in nature

– Open roofs for star gazing and views of nature

CONSTRUCTION

+ Raised pine foundations connected with elevated walkways

+ Open Common Areas + Geodesic Dome

– Galvanized iron triangles– Canvas cover with synthetic insulation

ENERGY USE AND MANAGEMENT

+ Passive Heating and Lighting+ Active Solar+ Wind+ High Efficiency Woodstoves+ Propane

WASTE AND WATER MANAGEMENT

+ Buy goods in Bulk+ Waste is sorted, stored, and packed out+ Organic wastes consumed by pigs+ Solid waste is composted+ Liquid is cleaned and infiltrates the ground

ACCREDITATION

+ ISO 14001 Certification- renewed annually+ National Geographic Best Adventure Travel+ Carbon free (Offsets)
