Flagella & CiliaBy Justin Borsdam & Zach White
Flagella & CiliaWhip-like appendages of cells that are the main source of movement inEukaryotic cells.
•Flagella• 1-2 Long appendages• Tail like appendage.
•Cilia• Several short appendages.• Usually lines the cell.
Structure Undulipodium – (9+2 organelle)
Characterized by 9 fused pairs of microtubule doublets surrounding 2 central single microtubules
Basal Body Cilia/Flagella grows from, and is attached to.
Plasma Membrane Surrounds the flagella
FunctionThe organization of Flagella/Cilia allows
microtubule to slide against one another and causes a bending movement.
This allows cells to do things such as swim, or move water across the surface of the cell.
Examples
Cilia
Diseases (Ciliopathy)Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia
Respiratory Tract, Fallopian Tube, SpermEctopic PregnancyMale InfertilityPolycystic Kidney DiseaseRetina DegenerationSitus Inversus
Cilial function is responsible for the normal left-right asymmetry in mammals.
