CARBON OFFSET CREDITS

Off setting is a tool that al lows people

or companies to invest in projects

that reduce carbon emissions.

Equal to a reduction of one ton of

carbon emitted

People or companies may buy carbon

credits to become “carbon zero”

Generated through projects:

Carbon sequestration projects (i.e. tree

planting)

Energy Effi cient projects (i.e. changing to

energy effi cient globes, appliances etc.)

Renewable energy projects (i.e. solar

power, wind energy etc.)

DEFINITION AND PURPOSE OF CARBON OFFSET CREDITS

Make people and businesses more aware of their own

contributions to global warming turn to carbon off sets

as a way to go neutral

Reduction of one ton of carbon put into atmosphere

People become more aware of their carbon footprint

Diffi cult to judge the quality of off set providers and

projects

Environmentalists doubt validity and effectiveness

Some people believe businesses and companies are

solely buying credits to improve the look of their

company

Sequestration projects sometimes fail

offset companies occasionally deceive their customers
