  • Introduction What is a GMO? Genetically modified organisms (GMO)- are engineered organisms or foods that are made in a lab to obtain a desired trait. How are they made? GMOs (or genetically modified organisms) are created by changing the genetic make-up of a gene using biotechnology; scientists are able to manipulate the organisms or food however they want (UF/IFAS Extension). They were introduced to the market around the mid 90s 64 countries require labeling (just label it.)

  • EFFECTS OF GM FOODS Are there possible effects of GM Foods? Since these foods have only been in the market since the mid 90s the long term effects are still unknown. According to FDA they are safe and have know known side effects.

  • COSTS OF LABELING University of Colorado Survey Food cost would go up Why not buy organic food?

  • MANDATORY VS VOLUNTARY LABELING Mandatory Labeling Leads to more monitoring and regulations People who do not care about labeling would be affected by spending more. BUT gives other people the choice whether to buy GM food products or avoid them. Voluntary Labeling Quite a few companies already are apart of voluntary labeling, most avoid GM food products.
