Day TwoDesign Brainstorm

Today’s Objectives

• Fill out Designer Brainstorm• Begin designing buttons in Print Shop• Fill out Step One of the Business Plan• Print them, cut them out, and paste them to

the Design Approval sheet. Get approved my Mrs. Rees.

Design BrainstormYour first step is to start

brainstorming about some ideas you have for buttons. There is a sheet provided in your packet for this. You may make up to 8 different designs, all aimed at a different target market. It is the Designer’s responsibility to get this sheet done.

Who is your target market?

• Remember that each button design you create can be aimed a different target market.

• Try not to make ALL your buttons aim at the same type of people.

• You can do a TOTAL of TEN buttons.• You can do up to EIGHT different designs—but

you are charged for every design. The more designs you do, the more you pay.

Design Variables

• Size – You may choose to a 1” size or a 2” size for each design. The 2” is of course a little more expensive.

• Printing – You may print in color, black & white, or draw the design freehand with markers.

• Royalties – If you choose to do an image or slogan that is copyrighted, you must pay royalties. If you aren’t sure an image is copyrighted, talk to Mrs. Rees.

Insert your company logo, enter group members

Fill out the orange spaces, listing each design, it’s size, etc.

The prices are listed here

Your selling price should be between $10 and $25.

You may make up to 10 badges total in advance of the Market.

Enter your number of total designs here, 1-8.

Final Design Sheet• The Organizer and

Designer will fill out the final design sheet. Bring it to Mrs. Rees for approval. If a design is not approved, you will have to come up with a new one.

• Designs will be denied if they are inappropriate or rude.

Day Three & four

Design Completion & Production

Over the next 3 Days...• Finish designing all buttons in Print Shop• Get all designs approved my Mrs. Rees• Fill out Manufacturing page• Print copies of all badges to be made• Print an extra sheet in case of losses.• AFTER you have done all of the above, write your group

on the board and wait to be called.• While you wait to be called, you may play games.• When your group is called, you may make your buttons.

Predicting the Market

• Each group can make up to 10 buttons pre-Market. Any button that you make beforehand that does not sell will come out of your profit. You will not be allowed to keep them.

• You can take up to THREE orders TOTAL at the Market.

• Any button made AFTER the market is made by ME. I charge 15% of your production cost to make it. Therefore, buttons ordered cost more to make than those already made.

Additional Instructions

• Any time you make a mistake making a button, it must be recorded as a LOSS. This will come out of your profit at the end.

• When you are finished making your buttons, keep them in the plastic bag in your box, marked with your class period.

Day 5Finish Production & Promotion

Planning

Today’s Objectives

• Finish all badges• Begin planning your promotions• Start creation of Advance Advertising if

needed

What does it cost?• All groups are automatically charged a $5.00 fee for

their required poster.• All groups must do one additional promotion– Giveaway– Raffle– Advance Advertising– Button Display/Table Decorations

• You MAY NOT give anything away to the customers EXCEPT your giveaway. This includes table decorations, etc.

Vote Tokens

• Remember that there are THREE ways a customer can buy from you. They can buy an actual badge, they can order one, or they can give you a vote token. You will want to include all these customers in your promotions.

Giveaways• You can choose to give away one button in addition to the buttons

you made pre-market. You will not make a profit on this button.• This promotion aims at getting MORE VOTES. It has the highest cost

of all the promotions. It also has the highest earning potential.• Students who give you a vote token can put their names in for a

drawing. Draw one winner at the end.• To do this promotion, you must come prepared with scraps of paper

ready-made for your drawing. You can make these on the computer and print them if you like. This is a great job for your Admin. Assistant.

• You will not make your giveaway button until ALL OTHER GROUPS have finished making theirs.

Raffle• The Raffle is also a giveaway—you give away one

button. It aims at selling tickets—not at getting votes.• For the raffle, the kids do not have to be a customer.

Each kid must purchase a raffle ticket for $1. You cannot charge more than this.

• It is preferable if you can bring some tickets from home.• When you calculate how much you made on your raffle,

you really only get .75 per ticket, so you have to sell a lot of tickets for it to be worth it.

• Lots of kids have money left over after they have bought their badges—remind them that they might as well buy a ticket for a chance at another badge!

• You will not make your giveaway button until ALL OTHER GROUPS have finished making theirs.

Advance Advertising• This is a cheap but effective promotions. You can

create a “teaser” poster that shows your badges in advance of the market.

• Once you have created it, you can place it in Mr. Simpson’s room. The earlier you get it up, the more benefit you will gain.

• It requires you to create this flyer in addition to your other posters.

• If you do this option, you must have the flyer completed by the end of the period TODAY.

Your Logo

Pictures of your badges

Your period

Do NOT include prices!

Advance Advertising

Displays• You may also choose to display your buttons in an attractive way.

It is highly recommended that you do so—buttons can “disappear” easily when just set on the table.

• You may “rent” a frame from me, or bring one from home.• If you display your buttons at all—either on a shirt, a hat, or

something else—there is a small charge.• There is also a small charge if you decorate your table—but this is

HIGHLY recommended as it will increase the number of kids who come to see your wares.

• If you want to rent one of my frames, look on the back of the one you want to find it’s number, and then tell me so I can sign you up for it. Do it quick—the one you want might go to another group!

Day Six Advertising

Today’s Objectives• Fill out Step Two completely.• Fill out promotion page• Decide who will bring what, and how you will

display your buttons.• Sign up for a frame if necessary• Create raffle tickets/entry labels if doing a raffle

or giveaway• Finish Advance Advertising if necessary• Begin creating posters in Print Shop

Choose which promotions you would like to do. Enter the costs in the spaces provided. See Mrs. Rees if you need to know for sure what the cost will be for your promotions.

Making Posters• Requirements– Two posters – One with pictures of each badge and prices• Prices must be LARGE and easy to read

– The other either has just your logo and slogan, OR it is an advertisement for your promotion, if you are doing one.

– You must have your logo and slogan on either poster SOMEWHERE to get full credit.

ExamplesOption One:Create one poster with your name and slogan on it. The other poster shows pictures of each badge and their prices.

Option Two:You still create a poster with the pictures of each badge and the prices, but the second poster explains your promotion, if you are doing one.

Day Seven & eight

Creating AdvertisementsThe Market

Today’s Objectives• Create two posters in Print Shop• Back it on poster board provided.• Put Velcro on all four corners• Hang it on the wall• Fill out the Cashiering page in the packet in

preparation for the Market.• Fill out “Are We Ready” in the packet and get

it signed.

Tomorrow’s Market

• When you arrive tomorrow, do not login. Get your posters, buttons, and anything else you need for the Market and be ready to go to the library.

• The Manufacturer will be in charge of collecting the money for each sale. Make sure that the prices for each button are prominently displayed.

3 ways to sellRemember—there are three ways to make sales. The more sales you make, the more money you make.1. Selling Actual Badges – This is when you receive money for the badges you have already created. This is how you get customers excited about your product. You really want to try to sell ALL of your badges! Any badges that don’t sell will go in my cookie jar—you don’t get to keep them! You are limited, however—you can only sell the 10 you make. You cannot sell more.

2. Taking Orders – You can take up to THREE orders ONLY. This means that after a certain badge is already sold, customers may order a badge. Try to take orders for your most expensive badges! After the market, I will make these badges and you will deliver them to those you ordered from. Make sure that you save the files where your original badge designs are so you can make more later. If you don’t, you will be docked. You are limited to selling only THREE orders.

3 ways to sell3. Vote Tokens – This is the only selling method that is UNLIMITED, and will be KEY to making money. After the selling portion of the Market is closed (meaning you can’t sell anymore made badges) you can then take vote tokens. Each customer has three tokens to give out.

Each vote token counts as if you had one more sale. Make sure you record WHICH BADGE the vote is for. If you don’t, the vote doesn’t count.

Again, each person at the Market has three of these they can give out. They can give all three to the same group or even design if they choose to.

Keeping Track of Money

At the end of the Market, add all your money together and write your total here.

Before the Market, list the names of each of your designs in the first column.

Remember to record WHICH DESIGN the vote is for—this is the only place where it is recorded. If you forget, you forfeit the vote.

If you do a raffle, record your number of tickets here.

are We Ready?

• The President must fill out this page in the packet, BUT there are things on the page for each person to do.

• If the item on the list does not apply to your group, check the N/A box.

• Once the President gets it initialed, your group may play games.

• By the end of this period, all preparations should be made.

Day nineThe Results

Today’s Objectives• President: Enter results in Step Three, turn in

to Rees Hand-in• President: Once results are announced, create

graph in Step 4 as demonstrated. Print.• Admin Assistant: Fill out evaluation page—

whole group should give input• Admin Assistant: Make sure all of packet is

filled out. Attach graph. Turn in to basket.

Today’s Objectives cont’d• Manufacturer: Separate out cash—put in piles

copies of each order (an extra in case I mess up making it). Put them in your ziploc bag, in your box. – If you do not have your orders ready, your group

will be fined $1,000!!!

Record the final numbers for all sales and orders.

Note that a fee of 15% of your profit margin will be charged for every badge you order. This is done automatically.

Make sure to include your losses from page 7 of your packet, and any giveaways you might have done should be added to your loss column.

Insert your logo as shown in the example.

Mrs. Rees will read off to you the results of the other groups. Enter them in the orange boxes.

• Staple the Business Plan to the packet and turn it into the basket.

• Whew! Almost done!

Day TenGroup Evaluation

Group Evaluation• Today you will fill out a Group Evaluation, determining how

each person in the group did.• This was a big project. If one person didn’t pull their

weight, it was difficult on the rest of you! I need you to be honest about your own evaluation and the rest of the members of your group.

• This will count as an individual score on your grade.• After all evaluations are in, Mrs. Rees will get you your

paychecks as soon as possible.• You will also make any badges that were ordered on market

day and deliver them.
