ACT I. A country estate outside Seville, late eighteenth century.

While p repar ing for their w e d d i n g , the valet Figaro learns from the m a i d Susanna that their ph i lander ing employer . C o u n t A lmav i va , has designs on her. A t this the servant vows to outwit his master. Before long the s c h e m i n g Bartolo enters the servants ' quarters with his housekeeper , Marce l l l na , w h o wants Figaro to marry her to c a n c e l a d e b t h e c a n n o t pay. After Marce l l i na a n d Susanna t rade insults, the amorous p a g e C h e r u b i n o arrives, revel ing in his infatuat ion with all w o m e n . He hides w h e n the C o u n t shows up, furious b e c a u s e he c a u g h t C h e r u b i n o flirting with Barbar ina , the ga rdene r ' s daughter . The C o u n t pursues Susanna but c o n c e a l s himself w h e n the gossiping music master D o n Basilio a p p r o a c h e s . The C o u n t steps forward, however, w h e n Basilio suggests tha t C h e r u b i n o has a crush o n the Countess . A l m a v i v a is e n r a g e d further w h e n he discovers C h e r u b i n o in the room. Figaro returns with fel low servants, w h o praise the C o u n t ' s progressive reform in abol ish ing the droit d u seigneur — the right of a nob le to take a manservant 's p l a c e o n his w e d d i n g night, A l m a v i v a assigns C h e r u b i n o to his reg iment in Seville a n d leaves Figaro to c h e e r up the u n h a p p y a d o l e s c e n t .

ACT II. In her boudoir , the Countess laments her husband ' s wan ing love but plots to c h a s t e n him, e n c o u r a g e d by Figaro a n d Susanna . They will send Cherub ino , d isguised as Susanna , to a romant ic assignat ion with the Coun t . Che rub ino , smitten with the Countess , a p p e a r s , a n d the two w o m e n beg in to dress the p a g e for his fa rc ica l rendezvous. Whi le Susanna g o e s out to find a r ibbon, the C o u n t knocks a t the door, furious to f ind it l o c k e d . C h e r u b i n o quickly hides in a c loset , a n d the Countess admi ts her husband , who , w h e n he hears a noise, is skept ica l of her story that Susanna is inside the ward robe . He takes his wife to fe t ch s o m e tools with wh i ch to fo rce the c loset door. Meanwh i l e , Susanna , hav ing obse rved everyth ing from beh ind a sc reen , helps C h e r u b i n o out a window, a n d then takes his p l a c e in the c loset . Both C o u n t a n d Countess a re a m a z e d to find her there. All seems well until the gardener , Anton io , storms in with c r u s h e d geran iums from a f lowerbed b e l o w the window. Figaro, w h o has run in to a n n o u n c e that the w e d d i n g is ready, p re tends it was h e w h o j u m p e d f rom

the window, faking a spra ined ank le . Marce l l i na , Bartolo a n d Basilio burst into t he room w a v i n g a cour t summons for Figaro, w h i c h del ights the Coun t , as this gives him a n e x c u s e to d e l a y the wedd ing .

ACT III. In a n a u d i e n c e room where the w e d d i n g is to t ake p l a c e , Susanna leads the C o u n t o n with promises of a rendezvous In the g a r d e n . The n o b l e m a n , however, grows doubt fu l w h e n he spies her conspi r ing with Figaro; he vows revenge . Marce l l i na Is as ton ished but thrilled to d iscover that Figaro is in f ac t her long-lost natural son by Bartolo. Mother a n d son e m b r a c e , provoking Susanna 's a n g e r until she t oo learns the truth. Finding a qu ie t momen t , t he Countess recal ls her past happ iness , then joins Susanna in c o m p o s i n g a letter that invites the C o u n t to the g a r d e n that night. Later, dur ing the mar r iage c e r e m o n y of Figaro a n d Susanna, the br ide m a n a g e s to slip the note, s e a l e d with a hatp in , to the Coun t , w h o pricks his finger, d ropp ing the pin, wh i ch Figaro observes.

ACT IV. In the moonl i t g a r d e n , Barbar ina, after unsuccessful ly trying to find the lost hatp in , tells Figaro a n d Marce l l i na a b o u t the c o m i n g assignat ion b e t w e e n the C o u n t a n d Susanna . Basilio counse ls that it is wise to p lay the fool. F igaro inveighs aga ins t w o m e n a n d Hides w h e n h e sees Susanna a n d the countess a p p r o a c h ready ing themselves for their m a s q u e r a d e . A l o n e , Susanna rhapsodizes o n her love for Figaro, but he, overhear ing , thinks she m e a n s the Coun t . Susanna hides in t ime to s e e C h e r u b i n o w o o the Coun tess—now disguised in Susanna 's c l oak— until A lmav i va chases him a w a y a n d sends his wife, w h o m he thinks is Susanna, to a n arbor, to w h i c h he will fol low later. By n o w Figaro understands the joke a n d , joining the fun, makes e x a g g e r a t e d love to Susanna In her Countess disguise. The C o u n t returns, see ing , or so he thinks, Figaro with his wife. O u t r a g e d , h e cal ls eve ryone to witness his judgment , but n o w the real Countess a p p e a r s a n d reveals the ruse. Grasp ing the truth a t last, the C o u n t b e g s her p a r d o n . All a re reuni ted, a n d so ends this " m a d d a y " a t the cour t of the A lmav ivas .

Last summer 's ope ras we re Hande l ' s Xerxes, c o n ­d u c t e d by Richard Epp a n d d i rec ted by Mart in O t a v a , a n d Mozar t 's Cos? fan tutte, c o n d u c t e d by Norbert B a x a a n d d i r e c t e d by Nancy Hormiston, Director of the V o i c e a n d O p e r a Division. A highlight of the trip was the pe r fo rmances of Cos? in the Stavovsky Theatre whe re Mozar t himself o n c e worked . The Ensemble looks forward to returning to the C z e c h Repub l i c this summer.

Other summer p e r f o r m a n c e highlights for the Ensemble i nc l uded a p roduc t ion of Gi lber t a n d Sullivan's HMS Pinafore d i r ec ted by N a n c y Hermlston, with the V a n c o u v e r O p e r a Orchest ra a n d c o n d u c t o r / a l u m n u s Leslie Dala, a n d a n August e n g a g e m e n t for A Merry Old Evening of Opera a t Bard on the B e a c h . Leslie D a l a a n d the m e m b e r s of the V a n c o u v e r O p e r a Orchest ra o n c e a g a i n jo ined the Ensemble for these sold-out pe r fo rmances .

The Ensemble ce leb ra tes Mozar t 's birth year with Le Nozze di Figaro, M a r c h 2-5,2006. In January, they t ravel led to Pr ince G e o r g e they pe r fo rmed The Magic Flute with c o n d u c t o r Leslie D a l a a n d the Pr ince G e o r g e Symphony Orchest ra . M e m b e r s of the Ensem­b le also jo ined Chr is topher G a z e a n d the V S O for a Tea a n d Trumpets c o n c e r t o n February 2,2006. Jennifer Farrell, John Arsenault a n d Rose Ellen Nichols, a l o n g with the O p e r a Ensemble , will join the V S O a n d c o n d u c t o r Bramwel l Tovey for a p roduc t ion of Dido and Aeneas a t the C h a n C e n t r e on M a r c h 31 a n d Apri l 1.

M a n y of our students pe r fo rmed in Turandot, V a n c o u v e r O p e r a ' s first fall p roduc t ion , a n d John Arsenault was also a soloist in Dia­logues of the Carmelites in November . Two U B C singers, Teiya Kasahara a n d Michael Mori, a re the official understudies for the V a n c o u v e r O p e r a Ensemble in their p roduc t ion of a new o p e r a by UBC sessional lecturer Ramona Luengen, Naomi's Road.

In M a y the Ensemble joins the S c h o o l of Nursing a n d the B C History of Nursing Soc ie ty to present Timothy Sullivan's o p e r a Florence: The Lady with the Lamp be fore returning to their Eu ropean ope ra t i c h o m e , Usti n a d L a b e m in the C z e c h Repub l i c , whe re they will sing in a n e w produc t ion of The Marriage of Figaro with c o n d u c t o r Tyrone Paterson a n d d i rector Mar t in O t a v a , a n d Don Giovanni with c o n d u c t o r Norbert B a x a a n d Director Josef Novak.

ACT I. A country estate outside Seville, late eighteenth century. While p repar ing for their w e d d i n g , the va le t Figaro learns from the m a i d Susanna that their ph i lander ing employer . C o u n t A l m a v i v a , has designs on her. A t this the servant vows to outwit his master. Before long the s c h e m i n g Bartolo enters the servants ' quarters with his housekeeper , Marce l l i na , w h o wants Figaro to marry her to c a n c e l a d e b t h e c a n n o t pay. After Marce l l i na a n d Susanna t rade insults, the amorous p a g e C h e r u b i n o arrives, revel ing in his infatuat ion with all w o m e n . He hides w h e n the C o u n t shows up, furious b e c a u s e h e c a u g h t C h e r u b i n o flirting with Barbar ina , the ga rdener ' s daughter . The C o u n t pursues Susanna but c o n c e a l s himself w h e n the gossiping music master Don Basilio a p p r o a c h e s . The C o u n t steps forward, however, w h e n Basilio suggests tha t C h e r u b i n o has a crush o n the Coun tess . A l m a v i v a is e n r a g e d further w h e n he d iscovers C h e r u b i n o in the room. Figaro returns with fel low servants, w h o praise the C o u n t ' s progressive reform in abol ish ing the droit d u seigneur — the right of a n o b l e to t ake a manservant 's p l a c e on his w e d d i n g night. A l m a v i v a assigns C h e r u b i n o to his reg iment in Seville a n d leaves Figaro to c h e e r up the u n h a p p y a d o l e s c e n t .

ACT II. In her boudoir , the Coun tess laments her h u s b a n d ' s w a n i n g love but plots to c h a s t e n him, e n c o u r a g e d by Figaro a n d Susanna . They will send Che rub ino , d isguised as Susanna , to a romant ic assignat ion with the C o u n t . Che rub ino , smitten with the Countess , a p p e a r s , a n d the two w o m e n beg in to dress the p a g e for his fa rc ica l rendezvous. Whi le Susanna g o e s out to find a r ibbon, the C o u n t knocks a t the door, furious to f ind it l o c k e d . C h e r u b i n o quickly hides in a closet, a n d the Countess admi ts her husband , who , w h e n he hears a noise, is skept ica l of her story that Susanna is inside the wa rd robe . H e takes his wi fe to fe t ch s o m e tools with wh i ch to fo rce the c loset door. M e a n w h i l e , Susanna , hav ing obse rved everyth ing from beh ind a sc reen , helps C h e r u b i n o out a window, a n d then takes his p l a c e in the c loset . Both C o u n t a n d Countess a re a m a z e d to find her there. All seems wel l until the gardener , An ton io , storms in with c r u s h e d geran iums f rom a flowerbed b e l o w the window. Figaro, w h o has run in to a n n o u n c e that the w e d d i n g is ready, pre tends it was he w h o j u m p e d f rom

the window, faking a spra ined ank le . Marce l l i na , Bartolo a n d Basilio burst into the room wav ing a cour t summons for Figaro, wh i ch del ights the Coun t , as this gives him a n excuse to d e l a y the wedd ing .

ACT III. In a n a u d i e n c e room where the w e d d i n g Is to take p l a c e , Susanna leads the C o u n t on with promises of a rendezvous in the g a r d e n . The n o b l e m a n , however, grows doubt fu l w h e n he spies her conspi r ing with Figaro; h e vows revenge . Marce l l i na is aston ished but thrilled to d iscover that Figaro Is in f ac t her long-lost natural son by Bartolo. Mother a n d son e m b r a c e , provoking Susanna 's a n g e r until she too learns the truth. Finding a qu ie t momen t , the Countess recal ls her past happ iness , then joins Susanna in c o m p o s i n g a letter that invites the C o u n t to the g a r d e n that night. Later, dur ing the mar r iage c e r e m o n y of Figaro a n d Susanna, the br ide m a n a g e s to slip the note, s e a l e d with a hatp in , to the Coun t , w h o pricks his finger, d ropp ing the pin, wh i ch Figaro observes.

ACT IV. In the moonl i t g a r d e n , Barbar lna , after unsuccessful ly trying to find the lost hatp in , tells Figaro a n d Marce l l i na a b o u t the c o m i n g assignat ion b e t w e e n the C o u n t a n d Susanna . Basilio counsels that it is wise to p lay the fool. Figaro inveighs against w o m e n a n d Hides w h e n he sees Susanna a n d the countess a p p r o a c h ready ing themselves for their m a s q u e r a d e . A lone , Susanna rhapsodizes on her love for Figaro, but he, overhear ing , thinks she m e a n s the Coun t . Susanna hides in t ime to see C h e r u b i n o w o o the Coun tess—now disguised In Susanna 's c l o a k — until A l m a v i v a chases him a w a y a n d sends his wife, w h o m h e thinks is Susanna, to a n arbor, to wh i ch h e will fol low later. By n o w Figaro understands the joke a n d , joining the fun, makes e x a g g e r a t e d love to Susanna in her Countess disguise. The C o u n t returns, see ing, or so he thinks, Figaro with his wife. O u t r a g e d , he cal ls eve ryone to witness his judgment , but n o w the real Countess a p p e a r s a n d reveals the ruse. G rasp ing the truth a t last, the C o u n t begs her p a r d o n . All a re reuni ted, a n d so ends this " m a d d a y " a t the cour t of the A lmav ivas .

Last summer 's ope ras we re Hande l ' s Xerxes, c o n ­d u c t e d by Richard Epp a n d d i rec ted by Mart in O t a v a , a n d Mozar t 's Cos? fan tutfe, c o n d u c t e d by Norber t B a x a a n d d i r e c t e d by Nancy Hermiston, Director of the V o i c e a n d O p e r a Division. A highlight of the trip was the pe r fo rmances of Cos? in the Stavovsky Theatre whe re Mozar t himself o n c e worked.The Ensemble looks forward to returning to the C z e c h Repub l i c this summer.

In January, they t ravel led to Pr ince G e o r g e they per fo rmed The Magic Flute with c o n d u c t o r Leslie D a l a a n d the Pr ince G e o r g e Symphony Orchest ra . M e m b e r s of the Ensem­b le also j o ined Chr is topher G a z e a n d the V S O for a Tea a n d Trumpets c o n c e r t on February 2,2006. Jennifer Farrell, John Arsenault a n d Rose Ellen Nichols, a l o n g with the O p e r a Ensemble, will join the V S O a n d c o n d u c t o r Bramwel l Tovey for a p roduc t ion of Dido and Aeneas a t the C h a n C e n t r e o n M a r c h 31 a n d Apri l 1.

M a n y of our students pe r fo rmed in Turandot, V a n c o u v e r O p e r a ' s first fall p roduc t ion , a n d John Arsenault was also a soloist in Dia­logues of the Carmelites in November . Two UBC singers, Teiya Kasahara a n d Michael Mori, a re the official understudies for the V a n c o u v e r O p e r a Ensemble in their p roduc t i on of a new o p e r a by UBC sessional lecturer Ramona Luengen, Naomi's Road.

In M a y the Ensemble joins the Schoo l of Nursing a n d the B C History of Nursing Society to present Timothy Sullivan's o p e r a Florence: The Lady with the Lamp be fore returning to their E u r o p e a n ope ra t i c h o m e , Usti n a d L a b e m in the C z e c h Repub l i c , w h e r e they will sing in a n e w p roduc t ion of The Marriage of Figaro with c o n d u c t o r Tyrone Paterson a n d di rector Mart in O t a v a , a n d Don Giovanni with c o n d u c t o r Norbert B a x a a n d Director Josef Novak.
