non-pair bond designation was theirwillingness to share a six-inch hangingperch taken from a standard parrot cage. They sat very close to each other andwere seldom at the opposite ends of theflight. Although preening is not a usualaspect of their behavior, I have seen, onmore than one occasion, the male tuckhis head under the female in such a wayas to allow her to preen briefly areas onthe back of his neck.

My original pair first went to nest forme in October, 1981. They were housedin a suspended aviary, a la RamonNoegel, ten feet in length, three feethigh and three feet wide. Living outsideof Washington, D.C. my birds are constantly kept in the basement. The flightsare hanging from the ceiling rafters. Thenest box, which hangs on the outside ofthe back end of the flight is 12" x 12" x24" deep. The entrance hole is three inches in diameter with a wire ladderleading down into twO to four inches ofpine shavings. The hen throws out agood deal of the shavings prior to layingher eggs.

I was thrilled when on October 31 st Igot a belated birthday present of onesmall white egg and then another onNovember 2, and another on November4 and a fourth egg on the 6th. The firstegg hatched on November 26, and byNovember 28 I thought I counted threehatchlings. I was reluctant to inspect the

her from the father and the babies, as hewas taking on most of the nurturingsince they had left the nest, and I wasafraid that she would injure one of thechicks. The hen was placed in a cageright next to the flight and remained inan agitated state until I reunited thepair, which came as soon as the youngstarted eating on their own and could beremoved from the father's care.

On March 24, 1982, I was surprised todiscover the first egg of the secondclutch. Again, there were four eggs, butthis time three hatched by April 18 and19, and much to my delight, I soon discovered that I had two lutinos (females)and one split (male). By June 4 the firstchick, again a lu tina, fledged, and onJune 5 her siblings were also out of thebox.

Eureka! All five babies would be readyfor sale by August 4, in time for theEighth Annual AFA Convention inWashington, D.C. In retrospect, I nowregret having sold all of my babies. Fortunately, Linda Rubin of Massachusettsbought one of my lutinos and she givesme periodic reports on' its progress. She

nest box for fear I would unsettle the henand she would stop sitting. Soon afterthe initial inspection, however, I discovered that there were only two hatchlings and an infenile egg in the nest. thethird egg or hatchling had disappeared.About a week later, I noticed dots on thebacks of the babies, the appearance ofsecondary down folicles. One chick hadlighter skin, and by using a flashlight Icould see the pink eye through the membrane still covering the eyes. I wasecstatic; I now knew that I had onelu tino and of course she had to be a hen,and the other chick was her brothergreen split to lutino.

Their eyes were open by December 6and the lutino hen made her debut onJanuary 12, 1982. Her brother followedsuit the next day. These chicks were big,and only their relatively short tails andclumsy movements revealed their juvenile status. The parents had proven verycapable in raising their offspring. However, on January 20 the motherbegan to show irritation toward theyoung as the flight was a bit more chaoticwith the four of them. I soon separated

Baby lutino ringneck at 50 days of age inthe author's hands.

aptly named the beautiful little hen,Lunar.

In looking back at the records I kepton both clutches, I can report the following statistics: The incubation period forboth clutches was 25 days, whereas thefledgling periods were 50 and 47 daysrespectively.

My feeding procedures for ringnecks israther simple. They receive sunflowerseed and a mixture of mainly millet, safflower and a little hemp. They love peanuts, which I limit to two, per bird, perday and corn-on-the-cob, which I givethem on a regular basis. They also willeat, and should have, frozen or cannedcarrots and peas, fresh spinach, wheatbread (usually soaked in 2 % milk), andan occasional orange slice. I use Headstart in the water during the fall andwinter months, the breeding season, anddiscontinue its use during the summer. Ialso will dust the fresh food with eitherVionate or Super Preem, and that constitutes a very easy, but nutritiousfeeding program for my birds.

Ringnecks have a great deal going forthem. They are easy to maintain andfeed. They are beautiful birds , always infine feather. They are sexually dimorphic, and their courting behavior isfascinating to watch. Once established, they breed regularly, and make excellentparents. Finally, they have a strong proclivity to produce color mutations, whichadds the exciting dimension of geneticsto the keeping of these special birds, andby the way, do you know which bird won"Best Parrot" at the recent NationalCage Bird Show in Pittsburgh? It was amale lutino ringnecked parakeet, and Iown his brother! •
