Consequences of El Nino:• Shifts in tropical rainfall

Which affects wind patterns around the globe

Streams over flowing

El Niño is an abnormal warming of surface ocean waters in the eastern tropical Pacific.

• It what causes ENSO is still unknown.

• El Niño occurs about every two to seven years.

• El Nino occurs because of the interaction between the surface of the ocean and the atmosphere in the tropical Pacific.

“La Niña is characterized by unusually cold ocean temperatures in the Equatorial Pacific, compared to El Niño, which is characterized by unusually warm ocean temperatures in the Equatorial Pacific. “

• La Niña is cooler than normal sea-surface temperatures

• La Niña is caused by the buildup of cooler-than-normal subsurface waters in the tropical Pacific

• La Niña usually occurs 3-5 years, and last about 9-12 months

Consequences of La Niña for US:• Drier then normal conditions in

the South West• Colder winters in the North East

Oceans: major body of saltine water Climate: area's long-term weather patterns•The relation between oceans and climate is that both of their temperatures change do to weather patterns.

How are oceans and climates related?

•The role that ocean currents play in weather patterns is its size allows it to store large amounts of heat energy. •Temperature, precipitation, and wind can affect density, which affects deep ocean movement and weather patterns.

How are oceans and climates related?

What is an ocean conveyor belt?

• a current that spreads heat around the globe • Any marine circulatory flow which is brought

about by changes in seawater density. Increased salinity or decreased temperature result in an increase in density, and when water is denser than the water underlying it, it will sink until it meets denser water. At that point, it will spread out laterally

How is the conveyor belt affected by climate?

• The conveyor belts hits the surface of the water, warmed at the equator, moves to high latitudes where it releases heat to the atmosphere. As a result, the water cools - becoming denser - and sinks to the deep ocean.

Sea Level Rise is attributed to……

Global Warming!

• Scientists predict that global warming will cause sea levels to rise by three methods:

• Melting of polar ice caps• Expansion of ocean waters• Extra precipitation from warmer air

• Scientists know that carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases are causing global warming and sea level rise because of the clear connection between the data of CO2 levels, ocean water levels, arctic melting and global temperature.
