Israel: The Miracle and the Jewish Mission
Israel is celebrating its 70th anniversary, remembering the
momentous events of May 14, 1948, when David Ben Gurion
announced the establishment of the Jewish state and Israel took its
place among the nations.
Israel's Deputy Minister of Public Diplomacy and historian Michael
Oren explained the precarious nature of the state at that time. "There
were 600,000 people here, about half the size of a mid-sized
American city and with basically handguns fighting six Arab armies
that came within 25 miles of Tel Aviv. It's hard to imagine, [they]
surrounded Jerusalem… [Israel had] no economy, no allies [and] a
population that was still languishing in displaced person camps in
Europe after the Holocaust."
Now he says, Israel not only has survived but thrived. "Our economy
has one of the highest growth rates in the world. We have one of the
most powerful armies in the world; we're a world leader in technology
and Israel is regularly listed as one of the seventh or eighth most
powerful countries in the world." It has built a strong economy, a
cutting-edge high-tech industry, a Nobel prize-winning science
base, one of the world’s best health services, and has permanently
revived the Hebrew language. It has a vibrant cultural scene and a
viable parliamentary democracy. Ben Gurion once said, "In Israel, if
you don't believe in miracles you are not realistic."
Israel's continuing miracle is not only that it's thrived but now it helps
nations in need. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was
asked: Why does Israel reach out to help so many other nations
when it's surrounded by enemies on all sides? He replied, "Because
we're a light to the nations. It's a fulfillment of that great prophecy. In
fact, that is what Israel is doing. It's doing it in places like Haiti and
the Philippines or Mexico. People say, what do you do? What is it
that you get out of it? And the answer is, we're not getting
anything out of it, we're fulfilling our deepest values. Israel is a
light unto the nations.”
There is another prophecy Israel is fulfilling: Israel is not just going
to the nations, but the nations are coming to Israel. Jonathan
Medved, the founder of Our Crowd, brought 10,000 people from
90 countries to Jerusalem for a high-tech summit of innovation
and investment. He said, "Israel is really the second-most source
of innovation and innovative companies in the world outside of the
US and Silicon Valley. We're called the startup nation. We're
looking here across the walls of Jerusalem and our ancient
history. We've always been dreamers here in Israel, whether it's
in the time of Abraham and the prophets there's always been
incredibly good news to come from this country.”
When I am in Temple Beth Sholom's sanctuary, I look in awe at
the flag of the State of Israel. It reminds me of the prophesies of
the Torah and the books of the prophets, for example,
Deuteronomy (Devarim) 30:4: " Even if you are scattered to the
farthest corners of the earth, the LORD your God will gather you
together and bring you back, so that you may again take
possession of the land where your ancestors once lived. And he
will make you more prosperous and more numerous than your
ancestors ever were."
Israel at 70: A miracle or the fulfillment of prophesies? I think it is
both. May God continue to bless the Jewish State, and may He
continue to bless our Shul as we share this simcha with the entire
People of Israel. And may God bless each one of us to fulfill the
mission of becoming a light and a blessing to every human being.
A Message from Cantor Andrew Schultz
In the tefilah for the State of Israel, we proudly proclaim, reshit
tz'michat g'ulateinu, that the State of Israel marks the first sprouting of
our redemption. Throughout our traditional Jewish liturgy, we beseech
the Almighty to return us to our Holy Land in order to expedite the
unification of the Jewish people by ending our exile. And of course, we
pray for the re-establishment of the Beit Hamikdash, the third Holy
Temple.
Since 1948, the evidence suggests we have reached the beginning of
redemption. The State of Israel was formed against all odds. The Arab
League called for an all-out war and a systematic effort to dismantle
land for which we waited for 2000 years. Our military forces were small
by comparison and our weaponry was limited. In spite of the
overwhelming opposition, Israel remained a Jewish land.
But after a decade and a half of sovereignty, the forces of evil returned
with a vengeance. Jordan, Syria, and Egypt coordinated their efforts to
wipe the Jewish State off the map. Amazingly, not only did the Jewish
State persevere during the 6-Day War, an even stronger Israel
emerged with the re-unification of our Holy City, Jerusalem.
Just like Chanukah, following the miracle of victory, we rededicated the
city which has been the center of Jewish life for thousands of years.
After the 6 Day War, we came that much closer to redemption.
Today, despite the existential threats facing our tiny Jewish State, not
only do we persevere, we thrive. People are making aliyah in droves.
Thanks to Birthright and other programs for young people, tourism has
never been higher. Today, the State of Israel is the linchpin for Am
Yisrael, the Jewish people.
As Israel's 70th Anniversary reaches it’s end, May Hashem grant the
Jewish State strength, resolve, and prosperity, in turn fostering the
achdus, unity of the Jewish people.

Our eyes look to the east.
The creation of the state of Israel fulfilled the
promise of a Jewish homeland. It is our
ancestral home. It provided a refuge to those
who fled from the horrors of the Holocaust in
Europe after World War II. It continues to
provide a refuge to Jews from the anti-Semitism
that continues to plague our world.
For seventy years, Israel has been a port in a
storm for the Jewish people and provides hope
for the future. In our hearts, we pray that it
continues and flourishes.
Our eyes will always look to the east.

Buses around Israel have signs with the Biblical
passage quoted: “You shall rise before the aged and
show deference to the old.”
Israel is the only country that has more trees today than
it did fifty years ago.
Thanks to its national snack (Bamba), babies in Israel
are 10 times less likely to suffer from peanut allergies.
Israeli bank notes have Braille on them to assist the
blind.
More than 9 out of 10 Israeli homes use solar power to
heat water.
Voicemail technology was developed in Israel.
Relative to its population, Israel has absorbed more
immigrants than any other country, with new-comers
from more than 100 countries.
