to Thornton Wilder’s THE MATCHMAKER.

WWe put together this season of dissncsve American voices back in November 2015. At the sme we could not predict the outcome of the U.S. elecson, or the divisions and dangers exposed by such brutal and cynical poliscal grandstanding. Nevertheless, we did anscipate that something classic and smeless, with a good dose of humor, earnestness, love, and irreverence might be a valuable tonic for what ails us all. Wilder dWilder defies category and expectasons with this play. He offers us characters equally unpredictable, riotous and romansc, brilliant and blind. These are very American hearts and spirits on stage. May our rendezvous with them nourish and invigorate our wintry souls.

Welcome,

Graham Smith in The Rainmaker, 2013. Kathryn Petersen in Dividing the Estate, 2011. Photos by Mark Garvin.

- Zak Berkman, Producing Director

In 1938, at age 41, Thornton Niven Wilder had already published 4 novels as well as numerous plays and essays, been produced on and off Broadway, translated works from French and Danish, written for Hollywood, and become a much sought-after lecturer. He had more than arrived on the literary and theatre scenes. His most recent work at the time, the play Our Town, challenged the prevailing mode of theatrical realism, enjoyed a successful run on Broadway, and won him a second Pulitzer Prize, making Wilder the only writer to have ever won the award in both literature and drama. And so it seems a curious choice that, writing amidst the larger context of the Great Depression and as Europe hurtled towards war that Wilder described as a “rush to the abyss...visible all over the world,” that one of American’s most celebrated writers at the time would give us what he called a “broad low comedy, based upon a Viennese classic of 1842” by Johann Nestroy.

Nestroy’s three-act musical comedy called Einen Jux will er sich machen (or “He Just Wants to Have Fun”) was also an adaptation of an earlier comedy by Englishman John Oxenford, whose one-act A Day Well Spent dates back to 1835. Wilder borrowed from Nestroy’s text, resulting in The Merchant of Yonkers. After a short unsuccessful run on Broadway, Wilder shelved it, calling it his “Ugly Duckling” but still had hopes for it in the future. A World War and economic recovery later, one of Wilder’s actor friends, Ruth Gordon, who he wanted as Dolly originally, convinced him to revise the play and it opened (with very little script changes) as The Matchmaker in London and then New York in 1954. That gets adapted into the hugely successful musical Hello Dolly! in 1964. But why was Wilder writing a farce/comedy to begin with in the 1930s, when up to 15 million Americans were unemployed and nearly half of the country’s banks had failed? Was it simply, as Wilder’s biographer put it, “a belief that in dark and perilous times, people need and want the ballast of laughter”?

In a 1939 interview, Wilder described his work as “French in form...German in sentiment...and American in eagerness and energy.” This youthful spirit and forward lean can easily be located in America, which, as Wilder’s close friend Gertrude Stein professed, “has always identified itself with world destiny.” This sentiment was most recently echoed in President Obama’s Farewell speech on January 10: “The work of democracy has always been hard... But the long sweep of America has been defined by forward motion, a constant widening of our founding creed to embrace all and not just some.”

While on his lecture tours in the American heartland during the 1930s, Wilder witnessed Depression era hardships and despair first hand, but also noted countless variations of American grit and ingenuity and diversity. When he was in Chicago in 1933, he gradually became enthralled with the sprawling Century of Progress Exhibition. In a letter to Ruth Gordon he wrote, “Artistically it’s one big lapse of taste, but on such a big scale that it becomes somehow important. I love it; I trudge all over those bright awkward acres, staring at my fellow-citizens. I see the back side of it: the immense personnel a little frantically earning a living, because scores of my students are selling hotdogs and pushing rickshas [sic] and holding information booths.” He was elated when the Exhibition officials asked him to compose an attendance certificate. Wilder knew what a special event this was in the lives of Depression era visitors who gathered hard-earned money to travel to and see the fair. It read:

Be it known to my grandchildren, and to their grandchildren that I [insert name] was present at the Century of Progress, an exposition raised in a time of doubt and hesitation by the gallantry of the American spirit; lighted through the genius of man by the rays of [the star] Arcturus; and that there I obtained instruction, enjoyment and the sense of wonder.

The optimistic eagerness, joyful energy, and sense of adventure integral to this story are much more than a diversion, but an expression of Wilder’s great love, admiration, and hope for America’s buoyant spirit. As we begin a new year and a new chapter in America, let’s answer the plea in this play for a more free and full participation in life and embrace the creative demand of our consummate forward motion, ingenuity, and grit that is uniquely ours as Americans.

Thornton Wilder PlaywrightThornton Wilder (1897-1975) was a novelist and playwright whose works celebrate the connection between the commonplace and the cosmic dimensions of human experience. He is the only writer to win Pulitzer Prizes for both drama and fiction: for his novel The Bridge of San Luis Rey, and two plays, Our Town and The Skin of Our Teeth. His other novels include The Cabala, The Woman of Andros, Heaven’s My Destination, The Ides of March, The Eighth Day and Theophilus North. His other major dramas include The Matchmaker (adapted as the musical Hello, Dolly!) and The Alcestiad. The Happy Journey to Trenton and Camden, Pullman Car Hiawatha and The Long Christmas Dinner are among his well-known shorter plays. He enjoyed enormous success as a translator, adaptor, actor, librettist and lecturer/teacher and his screenplay for Alfred Hitchcock’s Shadow of a Doubt remains a classic psycho-thriller to this day. Wilder’s many honors include the Gold Medal for Fiction from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. More information on Thornton Wilder and his family is available in Penelope Niven’s definitive biography, Thornton Wilder: A Life (2013) as well as on the Wilder Family website, www.thorntonwilder.com.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION

VISIONWe’ll make a future rooted in our history of artistic achievement

and fiscal discipline. Our core values are these: excellence in the quality of our plays and programs; service to our community; depth and longevity in our relationships; ongoing engagement with our company, audiences, students, teachers, and funders; and dedication to arts education. They inspire and guide us as we aim to become a place where people of all ages and backgrounds enjoy a range of theatre experiences that begins with entertainment and invites deep learning. We seek to become essential to the civic and cultural life of the Philadelphia region and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

MISSIONPeople’s Light, a professional theatre in Chester County,

Pennsylvania, makes plays drawn from many sources to entertain, inspire, and engage our community. We extend our mission of making and experiencing theatre through arts education programs that excite curiosity about, and deepen understanding of, the world around us. These plays and programs bring people together and provide opportunities for reflection, discovery, and celebration.

ABOUT PEOPLE’S LIGHTFounded in 1974,

People’s Light serves asone of Pennsylvania’s largest professional non- profit theatres, known for our resident company of artists, eclectic mix of productions, and innovative work with young people. In our 8-9

play season, we present stories drawn from ancient times through tomorrow that have direct relevance to our communities and their concerns. In support of this range, we produce classics and contemporary plays, and commission and produce new work: of our 418 productions, over a third (164) have been world or regional premieres.

At People’s Light we enhance our stage work with a variety of Surround Activities that connect us with many Delaware Valley communities near our seven-acre Malvern campus. Arts Discovery extends our mission with school residencies, student matinees that bring youth from 21 high schools to People’s Light each year for free, and a broad array of theatre classes for grades K through 12. This suite of education programs inspires and informs our production work in a reciprocal dance of influence and support. New Play Frontiers explores our American identity by commissioning leading playwrights to create plays informed by meaningful stories of nearby populations, and simultaneously develops audiences with a stake in the work. Community Matters sparks dialogue about vital social issues with free staged readings and town hall-style discussions co-hosted by the Theatre and local service organizations.

People’s Light has always called Chester County home. In 1979 we moved to our current location in Malvern, which includes two black box theatres with 340 and 160 seats respectively; offices; scenic shops; rehearsal halls; classrooms; a restored 18th-century farmhouse to house guest artists; the Bistro restaurant; and the Farmhouse banquet and catering facility that can be rented for special events. The Theatre employs 100 full- and permanent-part-time artists and staff members, most of whom live within 15 miles of the campus, and almost 200 guest artists each season from Philadelphia, New York, Washington D.C., and beyond. We operate with an annual budget of $6.2 million and serve 80,000 patrons, guests, students, and community members each year.
