John Muir was born in Dunbar, Scotland. He is one of eight brothers and sisters. In 1849, his family emigrated to the United States. They first

lived in farm in Wisconsin called the Fountain Lake Farm, which is now a National Historic Landmark. At an early age, he was known for having a

“restless” spirit and curious about the outdoors. At age 22, Muir enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and took a

chemistry course, and he became friends with the Professor (Ezra), which lead to a lifelong interest in chemistry and the sciences. He never graduated, but instead fled to Canada to avoid the draft. When he

returned, he worked in Indianapolis where he received an eye injury which changed his life. Afterward, he promised to be “true to himself”

and follow his dream of exploration and study of plants.

Biography

His first travels after college was to California to visit Yosemite. He had no job, no money and lived off the land. He wrote books about his

experiences. He was known for his natural history, his skill as a guide, and his vivid storytelling.

He made a camp called The Sierra Club and he started the club on May 18, 1892. The camp is still open today for people who want to

conserve, and the club is now present in all 50 states and continues John Muir’s conversation work.

In his later life, Muir devoted most of his time to the preservation of the Western forests. He drew up the National Park Bill that Congress passed in 1899, establishing both Yosemite and Sequoia National

Parks. Because his vast knowledge and interest toward nature was expressed in his writings, he was able to inspire readers, including Presidents and Congressmen, to take action to help preserve large nature areas. He is today referred to as the "Father of the National

Parks,” and the National Park Service produced a short documentary on his life.

How He Was a Good Citizen

John Muir persuaded Congress to make Yosemite National Park and Sequoia National Park to be protected by the people and then Congress had an idea and the soon made all the national forests to be protected and so

that they won’t be extinct. Also John Muir wanted all the people in the world to think of nature of how he did which he meant: Nature is a living thing just as we and they can be gone when ever you use it

and don’t think how important it is.

Legacy

John Muir left the world telling the world that nature doesn’t renew itself, it can be gone if

you don’t use it correctly, and you never know how fragile it is.

Also John Muir told the people that you need to conserve just as he did and reuse the

world.
