• THE SERIES� BYU and Utah are meeting for the 95th time in the series� The Cougars have played the Utes more than any other program in history� Utah has won nine in a row against BYU, tied for the longest winning streak for either team� BYU won nine in a row from 1979-1987 while the Utes had another nine-game winning streak from 1929-1937� No team has ever won 10 in a row in the rivalry� The game has been decided by one score in 16 of the last 20 contests, including three of the last four with Kalani Sitake as BYU's head coach�

• CROSSOVER. Not many rivalries have as much cross-over between coaching staffs and players as BYU and Utah, two schools that are just 46 miles apart� Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham was an all-conference linebacker at BYU (1978-81), earned his degree and a masters degree from the Cougars before spending nearly 30 years at Utah� BYU head coach Kalani Sitake, also a former BYU player, spent 10 years on Whittingham's staff at Utah as the assistant head coach, defensive coordinator and linebackers coach over the years before coming back to BYU as the head coach� BYU also has three staff members, Aaron Roderick, Steve Clark and Kevin Clune who have all spent time at Utah as coaches while Utah's Fred Whittingham also played for the Cougars�

• COACHED BY LAVELL. Whittingham played for hall of famer LaVell Edwards and was an all-conference linebacker at BYU from 1978-1981� Whittingham then coached at BYU from 1985-86� Sitake also played for Edwards as a fullback (1994, 97-00) and returned as a graduate assistant coach in 2002� Both head coaches credit Edwards' influence on their playing and coaching careers and his impact off the field in their lives�

• PAC-12. BYU will play five teams from the Pac-12 this season� After a win vs� Arizona in game one, the Cougars will face Utah, Arizona State, Washington State and USC�

• 9/11 TOWER CLIMB. BYU Athletics will host a Tower Climb at LaVell Edwards Stadium on Saturday, Sept� 11 at 8 a�m� to honor the lives lost in the attacks of Sept� 11, 2001� Participants will climb 2,071 steps representing the 110 stories of the World Trade Center, paying tribute to the first responders who climbed those steps, sacrificing their lives to save others� This is a non-profit event� The $16 ticket price will cover operational costs and include t-shirts, coins and badges given to participants� Security and water stations will also be provided� More information and registration details available via byutickets�com

9/18 Arizona State (1-0) 8:15 p�m� ESPNFormer Western Athletic Conference foe Arizona State visits Pro-vo for the first time since 1998 when BYU defeated the No� 14 Sun Devils 26-6 in Provo� The two teams also played 14 times as WAC members during ASU's membership from 1962-1978�

9/25 South Florida (0-1) TBA TBAThe Bulls of South Florida visit LaVell Edwards Stadium for the first time� The two met in 2019 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida� South Florida edged the Cougars 27-23 in Jaren Hall's first career start at quarterback�

10/1 at Utah State (1-0) 7:00 p�m� CBS Sports

The Battle for the Old Wagon Wheel resumes after missing out last year� BYU took the Wagon Wheel back to Provo in 2019 after the Cougars routed the Aggies 42-14 in Logan� The two teams have met 89 times previously�

10/9 Boise State (0-1) TBA TBABYU and Zach Wilson dismantled the Broncos on the blue turf last season with a 51-17 drubbing� The Cougars also edged Boise State in 2019 with a 28-25 win in Provo� BYU has never won three in a row against the Broncos�

10/16 at Baylor (1-0) TBA TBAThe last time BYU played Baylor was amidst the Cougars' 1984 National Championship season when BYU defeated the Bears 47-13 in Provo� The Cougars visited Waco in 1983 but lost 40-36�

10/23 at Washington St� (0-1) TBA TBABYU travels to face Washington State in the Cougars' first trip to Pullman� The two teams have met four times previously, with three in Provo and one in the 1981 Holiday Bowl, where BYU won 38-36�

POSTGAME MEDIA AVAILABILITYAfter home games, postgame press conference will be conducted via Zoom at LaVell Edwards Stadium� At the descretion of the visiting team, opponent interviews will be conducted in person or via Zoom� Coach Sitake and select players will be available following the NCAA mandatory cooling off period� Members of the media are invited to participate in the Zoom media sessions with login credentials provided by the BYU Athletic Communications staff and opponent communications staff� A direct video feed will also be sent to the press box from the BYU postgame press conference� A basic transcript of Sitake’s comments from the postgame press conference will be provided with additional player quotes upon availability� For road games, BYU will conduct interviews either in-person or via Zoom as directed by site host�

INDEPENDENCE: YEAR ELEVENAfter finishing the 2020 season 11-1, BYU enters its 11th season as an independent� This season, the Cougars play seven teams from Power 5 conferences, including three to start the year� BYU will face five teams from the Pac-12 in Arizona, Utah, Arizona State, Washington State and USC� The Cougars will also match up with Baylor of the Big 12 and Virginia of the ACC� In addition to those Power 5 matchups, BYU also plays in-state foe Utah State along with Mountain West power Boise State� The Cougars will host USF of the American and Idaho State from the FCS�

LAVELL EDWARDS STADIUMLaVell Edwards Stadium with its 63,470-seat capacity is home to BYU football� Originally Cougar Stadium, it was built in 1964 and seated 30,000� It was expanded in 1982 to seat 65,000 permanent seats before official capacity became 63,470 after various refurbishments� For the 2012 season the stadium featured new video walls and LED ribbons on the north and south end zone stands� BYU’s winning percentage at LaVell Edwards Stadium is ranked No� 14 among teams playing in their current stadium�Stadium record: 247-80 (�755)Since 2005: 76-21 (�784)2020: 7-0

MISSIONSBrigham Young University is owned and operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints� The missionary emphasis of the Church is perhaps one of its most recognized characteristics� Since the organization of the Church in 1830, over one million missionaries have served� The Church operates more than 400 missions around the world in over 150 nations speaking more than 160 languages� More than 53,000 missionaries representing the Church are serving proselytizing missions around the world� Most of the Church’s proselytizing missionaries are young men between the ages of 18 and 26� A substantial number of young women and older couples also serve proselytizing missions� Missionaries work long hours — seven days a week for two years (or 18 months for women and couples) — teaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ and participating in community service�

About 65 percent of the current team has served a mission� Members of the team have served in 28 different countries and six of the seven continents around the globe� More than 30 members of the team (previous signees or on roster) are currently serving in the mission field�

POLYNESIAN PIPELINEThe Polynesian Islands have become a hotbed for recruiting in recent years, but BYU has been one of the pioneers in bringing these players from Tonga, Samoa, the Hawaiian Islands and all of Polynesia to the forefront of college football since the early 1950s� About 40 members of the current roster are of Polynesian descent�

Some of BYU’s most celebrated and decorated players have come from the Pacific islands, including All-Americans, national record holders, players who have gone on to compete in the NFL and now, several members of BYU’s current coaching and support staff�

Kalani Sitake was named BYU’s 14th head coach on Dec� 19, 2015, becoming the first Tongan head football coach in the NCAA� His staff includes Polynesians Ilaisa Tuiaki, Fesi Sitake Harvey Unga, Nu’u Tafisi, Jack Damuni, Jasen Ah You and Vince Feula�

Kalani Sitake (pronounced kah-lah-nee see-tah-kay) enters his sixth season overseeing the BYU football program in 2021�

A former Cougar running back (1994, 1997-2000), Sitake is the 14th head coach in BYU history and just the fourth since 1972, when Hall of Fame coach LaVell Edwards took over the program� Sitake is the first former player under Edwards to be named head coach at BYU�

Named BYU’s head coach on December 19, 2015, Sitake returned to his alma mater with 15 years of coaching experience, including seven seasons a defensive coordinator and four years as an assistant head coach� He came to BYU from Oregon State, where he served as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator in 2015 under head coach Gary Andersen� Sitake spent the prior 10 seasons at the University of Utah under head coach Kyle Whittingham� He started at Utah in 2005 as the linebackers coach and was promoted to defensive coordinator in 2009 before also being named assistant head coach in 2012� He coached 12 all-conference honorees at Utah, including Morris Trophy winners Star Lotulelei (2011) and Nate Orchard (2014)�

During his career, Sitake has helped mentor 28 NFL Draft picks, including No� 2 overall pick Zach Wilson in the 2021 NFL Draft by the New York Jets� Sitake also coached BYU linebackers Sione Takitaki and Fred Warner and running back Jamaal Williams� Takitaki was a third-round pick of the Cleveland Browns in this year’s draft and Warner was one of the league’s top rookies after being taken in the third round in 2018 by the San Francisco 49ers�

Sitake has coached in 12 bowl games during his career and has been on the winning side in 10 of those 12 contests, including a 3-1 mark as a head coach� BYU is coming off a 49-23 win in the 2020 Boca Raton Bowl over UCF�

Sitake began his coaching career in 2001 as the defensive backs and special teams coach at Eastern Arizona before becoming a defensive graduate assistant at BYU in 2002 under Gary Crowton� Sitake then joined the staff at Southern Utah where he coached running backs, tight ends and offensive line during the 2003 and 2004 seasons�

He began his BYU playing career in 1994 prior to serving a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Oakland, California� After returning and redshirting in 1997, Sitake was a three-year starter at fullback for the Cougars from 1998-2000 under Edwards� A team captain as a senior, Sitake’s last game as a player was also the last game coached by the legendary Edwards, who was a great mentor for Sitake�

Born in Nuku’alofa, Tonga, and raised in Laie, Hawai’i and Provo, Utah, Sitake is the nation’s first FBS head football coach of Tongan descent� He graduated from BYU in 2000 with a bachelor’s degree in English� Sitake and his wife Timberly have three children, Skye, Sadie and Kelaokalani (KK)�
