Drilling composite materials

The new CoroDrill Delta-C R854 is engineered to:

• increase production security with its micro- grain substrate and diamond coating

• provide good quality holes in composites due to the new point geometry

• reduce bending of thin-walled components due to lower thrust and torque values

• offer a wide application area for dry and wet machining, with or without coolant holes

DemandsAs composite materials develop for their demanding application areas (including aircraft such as modern jets and helicopters) the demand for optimized cutting tools increases. Hole quality, production security and manufacturing economics are some of the most important factors.

Patented geometryDrilling composites with the new patented CoroDrill Delta-C R854 geometry improves production security, hole quality and tool performance.

The new unique low-thrust geometry lowers axial pressure, which in turn decreases the deflection of thin-walled parts and helps to minimize:

• Delamination on CFRP (Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic)

• Splintering, where carbon fibres break off on entry or exit

• Fraying, where the fibres fray between layers

CoroDrill® Delta-C R846CoroDrill Delta-C R846 gives a secure drilling performance on carbon fibre and titanium stacked materials and shows benefits on thin-walled components. The geometry reduces burr formation and gives predictable tool life.

Safe and even wear at the cutting edge improves performance for longer production runs, where high machine security is a high priority. CoroDrill Delta-C R846 is standard stocked but is made even more flexible as it can be produced to specific applications through Tailor Made.
