Saint Kateri Tekakwitha given the name Tekakwitha, baptized as Catherine and informally known as
Lily of the Mohawks, is a Roman Catholic saint who was an Algonquin-Mohawk laywoman. Born in the Mohawk village of Ossernenon, on the south side of the Mohawk River, she contracted smallpox in an epidemic; her family died and her face was scarred. She converted to Roman Catholicism at age nineteen, when she was renamed Kateri, baptized in honor of Saint Catherine of Siena. Refusing to marry, she left her village and moved for the remaining 5 years of her life to the Jesuit mission village of Kahnawake, south of Montreal in New France, now Canada. Tekakwitha took a devout vow of perpetual virginity. Upon her death at the age of 24, witnesses said that minutes later her scars vanished and her face appeared radiant and beautiful. Known for her virtue of chastity and mortification of the flesh, as well as being shunned by some of her tribe for her religious conversion to Catholicism, she is the
fourth Native American to be venerated in the Roman Catholic Church and the first to be canonized. Under the pontificate of Pope John Paul II, she was beatified June 22, 1980 and canonized by Pope Benedict XVI at Saint Peter’s Basilica on October 21, 2012. Various miracles and supernatural events are attributed to her intercession.
Her Feast Day is July 14.

Dear Parishioners,
Our Sacred Scriptures today tell us that the Law of Love is very near to
us — already in our hearts. Jesus teaches us how to live it in the parable
of the Good Samaritan. The Lord Jesus concludes by saying, “Go and
do likewise.”
Living the Greatest Commandment, the Law of Love, is often met
with opposition from our maze of social constructs, our politics, our per-
sonal attitudes, and our own self-centeredness. Yet God’s grace is greater
still, as noted in our second reading: Jesus brings reconciliation to all
things, making peace through the blood of His Cross, both on earth and
in heaven.
Let us embrace the Grace to work together in God’s great and glorious
Kingdom, now and forever! Thank You for being faithful parishioners.
Blessings upon you.
Fr. Gabriel
Vocations Corner — July 10, 2016 The Vocations Committee Invites you to pray for Vocations, especially those to Priest-
hood or Religious Life!
The Truth About Trust
The key to the entirety of the Christian life is placing our trust in God. There is
no place that this key is more pertinent than when it comes to either discerning
or living out one’s vocation. This is because all of us seek fulfillment, security,
and ultimately love. The only way that we will ever desire to fully commit to
following God’s plan is when we trust that doing so will be the best avenue to
reaching the things that each of our hearts seek. We hear so many people say
that they want to trust but that they don’t know how. In response to that, we
would simply say that living out trust is not something that should be carried
out only once one has fully proven to themselves that each and every base is
covered and that there is no possibility of things going awry. Rather, trust is a
fruit of having faith. Trust leads us to step forward in belief, with a true confi-
dence, and without fear precisely in the moments where it seems like things
could go either way. Trust requires stepping out and believing that God will
honor our faith and provide for us through the journey. So step out in faith
today, trust, be not afraid, and let God amaze you with the fruits of His love.
