Junior ReportBy Meghan McGillivray, B.C. representative, Canadian Junior Angus board

Hi Juniors!

I hope you have all had a nice winter break. Lots of junior events are coming up this year and I look forward to seeing you all around in the coming months.

For those of you who participated in the survey I sent out this fall it is very much appreciated. I have taken your feedback and am currently working on plans for an event sometime in the spring or early summer of 2017. I will have more details as we get closer to the time but I hope to see you all there!

In terms of CJAA news we are hoping to see lots of BC junior members at GOAL Conference in Edmonton this year as it is closer to home. We have some excellent speakers lined up for the conference as well as a lot of fun activities at West Edmonton Mall.  As always the scholarship panel discussion is a great part of GOAL and I encourage all eligible members to send in applications - the deadline is January 15th.

This year showdown will be held in Lloydminister, Saskatchewan. It will be a great opportunity to meet new members and see different genetics. We have a number of travel bursaries given out by the CJAA so make sure you all apply. If you have any questions about the show feel free to contact me. I hope to see many of you there!

Lastly, scholarship deadlines for the new year are coming up for both CJAA  and BC junior angus scholarships - CJAA Showdown Scholarships, Dick Turner Memorial Scholarship & BC Angus Scholarship. Make sure you all take advantage of the resources provided to you. As always, if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to email me at [email protected] or call me at (250) 320-3458.

It was a huge honour to be the recipient of the scholarship last year and it has allowed me to focus solely on pursuing my degree in Physiology without the added stress of paying for my tuition. GOAL Travel BursariesAwarded by the Canadian Angus Foundation and the Canadian Junior Angus Association

The Guiding Outstanding Angus Leaders (GOAL) Conference promotes leadership skills within the Angus breed. Junior members from all over the country attend this three-day event held in a different location each year. During the event, Juniors hear from nationally recognized speakers, participate in workshops designed to improve their leadership skills, get involved in teamwork activities, and develop beef and industry knowledge. Participants are also given the opportunity to network and socialize with fellow Junior Angus members.

Six Canadian Angus Foundation (CAF) and four Canadian Junior Angus Association (CJAA) GOAL Travel Bursaries will be awarded in the amount of up to $750 to eight deserving CJAA members and two commercial Angus youth from anywhere in Canada. Bursaries must be used within the same year awarded to help off-set travel and registration costs for the GOAL Conference.

“I was fortunate enough to have won a travel bursary through the Canadian Angus Foundation which helped to offset my travel to Ottawa, Ontario to attend my first GOAL conference. I was made aware of the travel bursary application by a fellow Junior and figured it would be worth the short time it took to complete! The application process was very easy and straightforward. The first step was to make a résumé of all your Angus involvement, and then answer a few short questions. When I got the phone call to find out that I had won one of the bursaries I was so excited and could not wait for GOAL conference to come! Winning this meant a lot to me. It truly shows how invested in Juniors the Canadian Angus Association and Canadian Angus Foundation are. The opportunity to attend GOAL allowed me to interact with Juniors that have the same interests as me. Also we got hear from top speakers regarding issues within the cattle industry, which allowed me to come home and share these issues with my family and to apply what I learned to our herd.” - Thank you, Riley Leeson

To be considered for the award, complete and return this application to the Canadian Angus Foundation by January 1, 2017. GOAL will be held February 18-20, 2017 in Edmonton, AB.

Applicant qualifications:1. Applicants must be a member of the Canadian Junior Angus Association.2. Greetings  fellow Angus Breeders: June 2018, BC Angus Association will host the CAA Annual General Meeting ...It seems like a long time away, but, for those of us preparing for this event the date is closing in quickly. The Comox Valley Economic Development and Tourism extended an invitation to Jill Savage and myself to come tour the area and give them the opportunity to showcase their Agri-tourism community. We spent two amazing days visiting their valley with our host and fellow Angus Breeder, Brad Chappell, from Heart of the Valley Angus.  (who calls this part of the province home.) We toured two facilities, Crown Isle Resort in Courtenay, as well as Painter’s Lodge in Campbell River.  These venues are large enough to host an event we anticipate will attract Angus enthusiasts from across Canada for a little different experience for most cattlemen and cattlewoman. This community went above and beyond our expectations welcoming us and arranging tours and farms visits. The highlight of our trip was the Shelter Point distillery where we were treated to a tour of their farm via a helicopter.  So, please put aside the first week in June 2018 as the Comox Valley hosts our National Convention. On a different note....many conversations regarding ACE or Angus Cow Enrolment.  I would be very receptive to hearing any questions or concerns regarding this proposed program. Please feel free to contact me.

Canadian Angus HistoryHi  Everyone, Let’s record history before the dust settles! The Canadian  Angus Foundation’s  newest project is to create the next Angus History Book lead by Doug and Linda Henderson of Lacombe, Alberta, with Tina Zakowsky at Angus Central assisting. We need each and every Canadian Angus Breeder to take the time making it a priority to send in your farm history. The last Angus History Book was produced in 1985 led by Lloyd Pickard. Whether you have been in the business for 5, 10 or 100 years, love to breed and raise Angus, or show Angus cattle we need your history to validate our Angus numbers. Send in the highlights of your farm history and as well we invite you to submit photos for consideration. To find the history guideline go to the Canadian Angus website. You can fill out the guidelines or write your own history and send it to [email protected] Thank you in advance for writing and sending in your history. We have an early bird draw date of December 9, 2016.  Submissions made on or before this date will be entered into a draw and the winner will be awarded a choice of the new Wendy Risdale canvas prints Maternal Watch or Time Out. Regards,Sylvia JacksonCAF Chair
