CARBOHYDRATES Carbohydrates are one of the main

types of nutrients. They are the most important source

of energy for your body. Its function is to provide energy for daily activity, to allow proper organ function, and energy of life.

There are two types of carbohydrates; the simple carbohydrates and complex carbohydrates.

Types of CarbohydratesSimple Carbohydrates Simple carbohydrates include sugars found

naturally in foods such as fruits, vegetables, milk, and milk products. They also include sugars added during food processing and refining.  In comparison to complex carbohydrates, simple

carbohydrates are digested by the body more quickly, because they have a very simple chemical structure.

There are two types of simple carbohydrates: monosaccharides and disaccharides.

Simple CarbohydratesTWO TYPES:Monosaccharides - consist

of only one sugar, and examples include:Fructose

Is sugar from fruit and like glucose it is naturally found in fruits and vegetables

Glucose Chief Source of Energy for

the Human body Glucose is found naturally

in fruits and vegetables

Simple CarbohydratesTWO TYPES:Disaccharides consist of two

chemically-linked monosaccharides, and they come in the form of lactose and sucrose.Lactose - is the sugar that

you found in milk productsSucrose – is just table sugar.

It is a double molecule containing one molecule fructose and 1 molecule glucose. It’s generally created by processing and refining sugarcane

Types of CarbohydratesComplex Carbohydrates  Complex carbohydrates include whole

grain breads and cereals, starchy vegetables and legumes. Many of the complex carbohydrates are good sources of fiber. They take a little longer to digest, and they don't raise the sugar levels in the blood as quickly as simple carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates act as the body's fuel, and they contribute significantly to energy production.

Starch – a type of complex carbohydrate. Main sources of starch is wheat, rice, corn, potatoes, and any foods that are made from those.

Types of Carbohydrates

Complex CarbohydratesComplex carbohydrates have a higher

nutritional value than simple carbohydrates. The consumption of simple carbohydrates is not recommended, especially for diabetics.

Carbohydrate DisordersMany disorders from lack/abundance of

carbohydrates. Examples:

Diabetes Hypoglycemia - low blood glucose

(sugar)

“Sugar is not bad, it’s the energy source of our body, fats aren’t bad, proteins aren’t bad, vitamins and minerals aren’t bad. What’s bad is you get an imbalance of nutrients.”
