C-Art at Rheged

This Autumn, Cumbria’s largest indoor tourist attraction Rheged will be teaming up with C-Art to present ‘C-Art at Rheged’, a specially selected exhibition that brings together a hand-picked group of artists and designers from this year’s Open Studios Trail.

The exhibition has been selected and curated by the ‘C-Art Young Curators’, a team of budding young artists from Cumbria aged 16 - 24. This new wave of young Cumbrian creatives will be led by Richard Smith, Curator from LICA at Lancaster University and Beth Hughes, Curator at the Lakeland Arts Trust. The final selection promises to be a diverse and revealing cross-section of Cumbria’s creative landscape, featuring everything from painting and cabinet making to ceramics and video art.

Born a farmer’s daughter in the fells of the North Pennines, Christina now lives in Lanercost near Brampton. She draws inspiration for her art from a deep love of the countryside and working in her beautiful cottage garden. The watercolour paintings are in impressionistic floral style using mainly pastoral colours.

Tricia Meynell 1

I’m drawn to colour – small patches here and there; stumbled upon by chance, often in the marinas of West Cumbria, where boats languish in stages of decay or repair, providing me with a source of inspiration and beauty. Despite my images being true to “life”, they sometimes take on the appearance of paintings, causing the onlooker to question the medium used to produce them. “Are they photographs?” “Yes. They are!”.

I produce sculpture which is as much about touching as seeing. My hands and fingers are as important as the eyes in judging, assessing and evaluating the form, until the sensuous piece beneath the surface is revealed. Each piece originates from patterns and rhythms found in nature. The shaping of something hard and rough into another form is both challenging and therapeutic.

Jenia Gorfunkel 3

Jenia works with recycled bottle glass. She designs and makes functional and decorative items for the home. She also makes silver and glass jewellery. Jenia takes on commission work. Jenia studied stained glass design and jewellery design at the University of Cumbria. Her appreciation of glass as an artistic medium and concern for the future of our environment encouraged her to devise a unique brand of fused glass designs.

isle Re-Freshed Fabric Art 6

Using fabric decoupage we breathe new life into the best retro, vintage and pre-loved furniture and home-wares. We view each item as a blank canvas and the fabrics become our paint palette. New and vintage cottons and silks are individually cut by hand and meticulously applied layer on layer, to create unique but practical works of art, which can be used, enjoyed and appreciated on a daily basis.

Visitors to my studio will see contemporary paintings and drawings in a variety of media. I find inspiration from personal experience, as well as literature, poetry and the work of other artists. I have always been fascinated with ways of depicting human and animal form. My work reflects an interest in a woman’s perceived place in society and her own sense of identity, as well as an exploration of motherhood and the family.

The sea and Solway coastline are the focal point of Ros White’s work. The transient nature of the coast compels and fuels her paintings, and aquatints. My mixed media sculptures have a Northern theme depicting creatures of forest and tundra and referencing prehistoric art. Wolves, bison and deer roam the studio, alongside paintings of their habitat. I see the animals as Guardian Spirits, symbols of wilderness, and its loss... meditations on both the resilience and fragility of life. I have exhibited nationally and in several international shows. The weather and changing cloudscapes of Cumbria ensure that views even from the same spot are never the same. I’m a potter, married to Hannah a basket maker, our work is influenced by the environment in which we live. I make with stoneware using throwing and hand building techniques. Using local materials in glazes, an example being Solway sand. The pots are fired to 1300 c in a wood fired cross drought kiln for up to 48 hours. Although interested in mark making, it is more important to allow the clay to speak.

I have a passion for working with wood, expressing its natural beauty within a contemporary design. All my timber is locally sourced and is obtained sustainably, for example from fallen or storm damaged trees. My preferred style is ‘minimalist’, using a simple design which allows the wood to express its own qualities. This often includes natural edges, knot-holes, burrs, spalting, and other naturally-occurring imperfections. Each piece is truly unique.

I love textures in my weaving and create these with the use of yarns or weave structure. I am inspired by the changes in colour and form in nature through the seasons; contours of tree bark, lichen on rocks all serve as design sources. The primeval forces that moulded the landscape so long ago created cracks and fault lines that are depicted in my latest collection ‘Earth Lines’ wall hangings.

Established as a furniture maker since 1990, Bob Johnston set up his Blindcrake workshop six years ago. The joy of working with wood lies in making the most of the natural strengths and character of each timber. Working with the client’s brief, Bob designs individual artefacts which will last for generations. Traditional methods of construction, and hand finishing, ensure both functionality and tactility.

After graduating from a BA Fine Art (Hons) Degree in 2012, I returned to my home county of Cumbria where I continue to develop my practice. During my University studies, I primarily worked conceptually and with the three-dimensional. I am now however, exploring my practice by means of two-dimensional media. Though I try to avoid specialising, I typically work with acrylic inks, drawing media and print methods. Visual inspiration ranges from the natural landscape to everyday objects.Address West Cumbria Print Studio, Unit 4, Gate House, Hallwood Road, Lilyhall, Workington Farlam, CA14 4JR

Oil painter and printmaker, I am the founder and Director of the West Cumbria Print Studio. I have worked in a variety of print media using each to create a different vision of the subject matter I am exploring. As a figurative artist I am, though, mainly concerned with an understanding of the human figure as this creates the most complex, difficult and challenging imagery within all of the paint, print and drawing media.

I have made pottery for many years now and decorate both stoneware and earthenware pots. These are for daily use and have individuality even when they are within one of our ‘ranges’. Wasdale, my closest valley is a great inspiration both for my pots and pictures, as are the people and life around me. Clays, pastels and paints have endless fascinating permutations.

Dick Wright 63

Dick Wright has worked as a potter for 38 years, making mostly reduction fired stoneware domestic pottery and always regarding himself as craftsman rather than artist. His main concern has been to achieve simplicity of shape and a good design for the purpose. However, even a craftsman has his flights of fancy and Dick will enjoy creating special pierced and cut pottery for this year’s trail.

Painter and photographer concentrating on landscape derived work, taking inspiration from the Western Lake District valleys, notably Wasdale. I paint mostly in oils, sometimes in acrylic. All my work tends to feature a strong sense of composition, light and space, which in my paintings sometimes verges on the abstract. My paintings are an appreciation of the domestic and the ordinary, a contemplation of the rituals of daily life. Flowers, vases, jugs, teapots on table top, treasured objects from loved people, a cat sleeping, a walk with the dog, an old couple sharing a picnic by the sea; these brief glimpses and encounters, visions of the everyday are the inspiration.

First Tuesday Group 86

We are a group of artist friends who have been meeting for about the last 7 years, unsurprisingly, on the first Tuesday of every month. We meet in different locations to sketch, share a coffee and/or lunch and for support and discussion on our own work. We thought it high time we exhibit our work together. Our work is very varied, from sketches, landscape and abstract painting to glasswork and pottery.

My work plays between the abstract and the figurative. Rich colours and surfaces, pattern, paint, gold leaf, photographic images (my own and archive) capture significant moments, histories. Tales of Russia. Mementos. Visitors to the rambling house that is home and studio can see work, finished and in progress, from large canvases to tiny boxes. There is space inside and out in the gardens to explore, and see what lies behind.

Having spent many years as a curator I started to develop my own drawing style during a tour of Italy. While I was the curator of Keswick Museum I took a Printmaking class at Carlisle and became fascinated by aquatint etching. Since then I’ve branched out into drypoint, monoprinting and carborundum. My work is principally concerned with houses, buildings & other manmade structures. I also draw ‘house portraits’ to commission.

Making sculpture is, for me, like an extension of the idea of constructing with whatever is to hand, having affinities with activities such as walling, laying hedges or stacking bales. Often working with found materials – the detritus of the landscape or the city – I make constructed forms which give a new context for these discarded materials and identities, to evoke moods, feelings, ideas.

My recent paintings are figurative, with the horse as the dominant subject, but they are not intended to be only narratives about particular horses or the qualities of horses. For me, the paintings also have a lot to do with the nature of painting itself, in particular the balance between two-dimensional surface pattern, and the perception and depiction of three-dimensional space.

My work is making ceramic forms that are an expression of the places where we live and the environments we pass through. Vases, bowls, dishes, planters and plaques are individually hand-built using earthenware clay. Layers of inlay, texture and colour slips are applied to each pot. Drawings and paintings of landscape, architecture and plants form the basis of my designs.

My subjects are accurate portraits of people, animals, plants or landscapes. I celebrate the individual. I use acrylics, coloured or graphite pencils, and sometimes all three together, to achieve every texture in my portraits. I apply paint with very small brushes to depict subtlety of texture, such as the shine on a smooth haired dog or the peach skin of a baby’s cheek.

Phillipa Turnbull 108

Inspired by my research into “crewel” surface embroidery found in British castles, museums and country houses, I re-create and interpret the techniques from the past. In support of my mission to bring appreciation of past embroiderers̀ work, I run international needlework seminars using these embroideries as my source material. I re-create rarely seen Jacobean and Elizabethan designs, stiches and colours in my crewel work, and sell kits in needlepoint and crewel work enabling others to create their own heirloom piece. I also use these designs on porcelain mugs and screen printed scarves.

I like to explore Cumbria’s harsh, rugged, wild landscape and capture it’s beauty with traditional monochrome film cameras. When it comes to the printing I also enjoy the very minimum of electronic input and print with traditional wet darkroom processes, my hand crafted Silver Gelatin prints are created by the “drawing of light” as the original negative is projected and worked onto the photographic paper.

I am a felt artist but I also enjoy oil painting. My inspiration is often drawn from our garden and the countryside around us rich in wildlife, especially hares which feature strongly in my work. My work is an abstract exploration of the formal and physical aspects of painting - colour, tone, shape, texture, pattern, line, etc. Often it is also an intuitive response to various aspects of landscape. The ambiguity of representing space on a flat surface is a central concern. Sizes vary from small paper pieces to large canvases and occasionally to architectural scale commissions for public buildings.

As a painter and printmaker I work in a variety of media. Themes include interiors, still lives and aspects of landscape.

I throw using a smooth white stoneware clay. Pieces are either left unaltered or are allowed to stiffen before being cut, sections removed and reassembled. The utilitarian wares of Spain and Portugal and the deep but subtle glaze finishes achieved in the Far East form the backbone of my inspiration. I intend the work to have a simplicity that emanates primarily from function, and an elegance that is clearly derived from the Orient.

Debby Akam 132

I’m showing paintings, and woodcut prints characterised by saturated colour, repeating motifs, and overlaid slabs of decorative patterning. They re– investigate aspects of early modernism, and draw on organic and vernacular forms, and global textile designs. I want to draw the viewer into the work to suggest interior spaces of architecture and the mind and layers of consciousness that might predominate in dreams, and meditative states.

Gary Power 131

The work displayed will include original drawings on paper using acrylic ink and watercolour and paintings on board. I am interested in investigating systems of chance and order. I use serial compositions of repeated marks, and geometries within a grid to create a sense of repetition within variation. This rhythm creates a kind of notation or calligraphy that can be read as a gestural visual script registering duration, movement, interdependence between things; change and mutability; or the shifting patterns of light and shade.

Michelle Castles 136

I am a sculptor specialising in the human figure in its prime. Working in the medium of weld mesh, I manipulate the wire by hand to capture the likeness of dynamic forms. Inspired by sport and dance, I capture the pose in suspended animation, from miniatures to life size, single pieces to installations. The translucency of the mesh gives an ethereal beauty, a paradox of absence and presence.

Heather Davies 152

Heather’s work is an emotional response to the natural world. Light is inspirational and plays an important part in the composition. Her choice of colour varies from intense reds to subtle greys and even black. This often sombre palette adds a sense of drama to the finished painting, creating a mysterious mix of reality and abstraction. Her studio is situated in a relatively undiscovered part of Cumbria, and this landscape is often the focus of her work.

My work is described as mixed media but does lean towards textiles, with the use of hand stitching and haberdashery treasures. Most of my work has a strong narrative element, which is very personal to me, helping with the decisions of what to put in a piece and what to leave out.

Alston Artspace 160

Seven* painters, printmakers and a photographer have created a gallery in this delightful Pennine town, next to the market cross. Their work is often inspired by the surrounding uplands but also includes an eclectic mix of other subjects both abstract and representational. Discovering the artspace is a good enough reason for you to visit Alston... *Jules Cadie, Glynnis Carter, John Fowler, Alan Hayward, Nicky Neate, Lionel Playford & Jane Willis

Jules Cadie 159

Jules Cadie’s artwork is based on locations around the high watersheds of the rivers South Tyne, Tees and Wear – all within walking distance of his North Pennines studio. Attached to his home, the studio, a lead-miners’ shop, is a stramash of canvases, natural raw materials, tools, greenwood and half-baked ideas. Apart from two-dimensional and material work, Jules Cadie’s investigations include sculpture, installations, digital imagery, exchange events and blogging.

Jane Willis 162

My starting point is usually: “What will happen if…?” I enjoy using a wide variety of materials: paint, textile and ceramic. My imagery is usually graphic and abstract though sometimes I venture into the figurative with drawing and print. I am constantly delighted by the views towards Cross Fell from my studio and hope that some of that delight comes through in my work. Always ready to put the kettle on!

Helen Johnson 161

My work has always been rooted in Modernist theory and whilst the subject matter may change each piece contains similarities in terms of technical practice; specifically referring to colour and movements within the two dimensional picture plane. I am currently developing a body of work focussing on the elements. My Water series plays with colour, space, depth and form where I create believable space within a semi-abstract context.

C-Art is a visual art and design festival that takes place across the Lake District and Cumbria every year. For two weeks in September, artists, designers and independent galleries open their doors to the public, situated in some of the UK’s most picturesque towns and villages.

Throughout the two weeks you’ll find a trail of yellow signs popping up all over Cumbria, revealing the location of a hidden artist studio or independent gallery for you to explore. Follow the trail and discover friendly folk happy to invite you in for a cup of tea and a chat about their artwork. If you’ve never visited an art gallery before, this is a great introduction to see how artists work and what inspires them. You’ll also get the chance to buy artwork direct from the makers, a perfect memento of an inspiring day out.
