HBO Asia ushers in new direct-to-consumer eraMulti-platform strategy & viewer choice replaces StarHub exclusivity in Singapore

HBO Asia looks like it’s up to a lot of good for the Year of the Pig, rolling out a multi-platform strategy that – among other ele-ments – boosts direct-to-consumer access and payment options through Apple’s App Store and Google’s Play Store in Sin-gapore, and adds all of HBO’s services onto Singtel’s TV and streaming platforms.

The new era makes Singapore the only market in Asia where consumers can subscribe to HBO Go directly through Apple/Google.

The new iteration of HBO Go costs S$13.98/US$10.36 a month for six live linear channels along with on-demand access to everything from Game of Thrones and Westworld to original Asian series Folklore and Miss Sherlock.

The app subscription allows two con-current streams, up to 20 downloads at a time for offline viewing, and the ability to cast to TV screens via airplay. The app also premieres HBO originals at the same

time as the U.S. HBO’s entre into the universe of stand-

alone/direct-to-consumer apps in Singa-pore closes a two-decade era of exclusiv-ity with StarHub, and ushers in a new world of consumer choice and experience.

HBO Asia’s official announcements this month about its redrawn Singapore map are contained to its venture with Singapore’s Singtel, which kicked off on Friday, 1 February, on the TV platform and will follow in March with a presence on Singtel’s aggregator app Cast. So far, the new App Store and Google Play store access is flying under the radar.

The Singtel deal covers HBO Asia’s six linear channels on Singtel TV and on linked app, Singtel TV Go. The bundle costs the same as the standalone app on Apple/Google stores. From 15 March, HBO Go will also be available through Singtel’s Cast, also for S$13.98/US$10.36.

Cast offers multiple streaming apps,

Jade Pendant, Red by HBO

including Viu (S$6.90/US$5, no contract) and Hooq (S$7.90/US$5.85, no contract), along with its own channel/on-demand streaming bundles such as Variety Plus (S$14.90/US$11 no contract) and Sports Plus (S$49.90/US$37, no contract).

The reworked relationship with StarHub has been brewing since last year, when renewal negotiations were rumoured to be following StarHub’s policy of lower content/affiliate fees.

Just before Christmas, StarHub said it was slashing the price of HBO channel packs by between 13.5% and 27.4% from 31 January, putting the smaller pack in the S$14/US$10 a month range (a cut of S$5/US$3.65) and the full pack at S$25/US$18 a month (S$3.90/US$2.85 lower).

The price for the standalone HBO Go service, bought through StarHub, used to be S$19.90/US$14.50 a month. This has now dropped to S$13.98/US$10, bringing it in line with the competition.

PPTV expands entertainment slate Thai broadcaster eyes women to drive top 10 ambitions

Thailand’s free-to-air digital terrestrial sta-tion, PPTV HD36, kicks off its revamped drama slate in the second quarter of this year, part of an ongoing effort to expand its reach beyond sports.

Strategies in place as the channel push-es for a solid place in the country’s top 10 involve, among other things, expanding its base among females 15+ nationwide. Right now the channel;s audience is 60% male, 15+ nationwide.

PPTV has also appointed its first chan-nel ambassador – Thai actress Fonthip Watcharatrakul.

The new line-up features 10 Thai dramas and localised variety formats, including singing formats – The Voice, The Voice Senior and The Voice Kids – acquired from Talpa last year in a three-year deal to 2020.

“Thai dramas and entertainment pro-grammes are essential to our success,” says Bangkok Media and Broadcasting Co Ltd president, Surin Krittayaphongphun.

PPTV HD36, established in April 2014 by Bangkok Media and Broadcasting, hasn’t yet disclosed specifics of its new drama slate.

Variety shows will include a live morn-

ing talk show Mama’s Talk, cooking show Kritchen by Shakrit and game show Kik Doo Songkram Plang Ngeon Lan.

Animation series for this year include Marvel HQ and Japanese football show Captain Tsubasa, kick off the new line up on Sunday, 3 February. Marvel HQ airs 8am-9am followed by Captain Tsubasa at 9am-9.30am.

Acquisition spend is about the same as last year, says PPTV HD36’s content acquisition director Krissada Trishnana-nda. Dollar amounts have not been dis-closed.

At the same time, PPTV has every in-tention of hanging onto its premium sports lead, adding Australian Open, U.S. Open and Top Rank Boxing to the 2019 schedule. In the past three years, the network has solidified its position as a live sports broadcaster, with properties such as English Premier League, Bundes-liga and La Liga.

Surin says the goal is to “foray into the solid top ten”.

Across Thailand’s DTT space, PPTV HD36 ranked 12th, with average rating of 0.179 or 101,197 viewership in 2018, according to AGB Nielsen data provided by PPTV.

Lunar New Year eve peace for

VTVCab, Q.netSix channels return to air, another 20 scheduled by

end March 2019

Vietnamese pay-TV platform VTVcab and channel distributor Qnet appear to have made peace, with a Lunar New Year eve agreement that puts six channels back on VTVcab and Viettel TV, with another bundle likely to follow by the end of March.

The six linear channels that returned to air on Friday, 1 February, are CNN, BBC World News, Bloomberg, Fashion TV, Fox Sports and Cartoon Network.

It’s not yet clear which channels are included in the next batch, and com-mercial terms of the new deals have not been disclosed.

The row blew up early last year, when Q.net and local platforms VTVCab (Vietnam Television Cable Corpora-tion) and Viettel failed to agree on renewal pricing. At the time, insiders predicted the beginning of the end of the minimum-guarantee environment.

Q.net also represents HBO Asia, Dis-ney, Fox Networks Group, Sony Pictures Television Networks Asia, Turner and Discovery, all of which were impacted by the impasse.

OUT NOW!

Singapore media behemoth, Media-corp, has expanded its relationship with YouTube, adopting YouTube's Player for Publishers (PfP) video hosting/streaming/ad management system for the first time and gearing up for the commercial re-launch of its YouTube channel, 8world, by the end of March this year.

The reworked strategic content partner-ship announced on 1 February involves news, current affairs, entertainment and lifestyle content from two media brands – Channel NewsAsia and 8world.

The new system gives Mediacorp bet-ter control of advertising on YouTube.

Mediacorp has been operating three YouTube channels – Channel NewsAsia (since October 2006 / 213,000 subscrib-ers), human interest brand CNA Insider (since March 2014 / 112,000 subscribers), and Chinese portal 8world News (since August 2013, 61,000 subscribers).

Channel NewsAsia started live stream-ing its 24-hour linear service on YouTube on 15 January 2019.

Mediacorp says the adjusted relation-ship with YouTube allows it "to better con-

nect consumers with news videos" and to "give Mediacorp better control of its advertising opportunities on YouTube through PfP’s specific features, reducing costs in relation to the YouTube platforms and simplifying the video infrastructure to deliver the most optimised user experi-ence to Mediacorp’s audiences on You-Tube."

The cost-savings relate only to the com-pany's existing YouTube services, and there are no related cut-backs in any of Mediacorp's other services.

Mediacorp says the new relationship with YouTube is complimentary to its own streaming platform, Toggle, websites and TV services.

None of the content on Mediacorp's YouTube services is created especially for YouTube audiences, and there are no plans to create original content for the YouTube channels.

In total, Mediacorp operates about 40 products in four languages across all platforms, reaching 99% of people in Sin-gapore every week (source: Nielsen Me-dia Index).

One of Netflix’s newest shows, Sex Edu-cation, has generated enough demand in Thailand to put it in the top five shows overall for the week of 23-29 January, ac-cording to data science company Parrot Analytics.

Sex Education, which premiered on Netflix on 11 January, ended the week in the three million demand expressions band along with singing formats – I Can See Your Voice Thailand and Mask Singer – and fantasy dramas Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead.

On the digital originals list, Sex Education

attracted about double the demand of nearest rival, Marvel’s The Punisher.

Sex Education is a British comedy-dra-ma starring Gillian Anderson in a story of a socially awkward high-school virgin who lives with his sex-therapist mother.

Animation had a strong showing on the overall list for the week, led by Japanese anime series My Hero Academia and One Piece, with kids show My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic coming in at #10.

Netflix took six of the top 10 spots on the digital originals list, including the first four places.
